1Pilot
Raintree is a thoroughbred horse-farm. Pete, its owner, left the Ritter family and serious debt, but Jean Ritter is determined to keep it in the family, rather then sell control to the wealthy and well-connected Ken Davis. Her invaluable horse trainer, Pablo Betart, who once has a record too, convinces her to hire a new ranch hand- it's Kris(ten) Furillo, who needs the job to convince the judge to end her detention term for car theft and resisting arrest. Her horse-skills impress everyone, from old Henry and young but extremely astute Todd Ritter to the young men on the ranch, good friends Todd Ritter and Kenny 'Junior' Davis. After their best horse comes only fourth is a high-prized race, Jean doubts whether she can hold out financially.
2Trust
After serving a light term, Kris Furillo is allowed back to the ranch, and so is her favorite horse Wildfire, but he is in no state to be ridden. Mother Jean Ritter has reason to worry Kris' presence -now in the house too- will get the boys too horny, and indeed her son Matt -to whom Kris explains the burly boy he saw her with in jail is just her brother, US Marine Jace- breaks up with Kenny's sister, Danielle Davis; Kenny Junior Davis dares him to a car race, which get her and both rivaling friends arrested, which may even lead to revoking her parole. Kris tells Matt she can handle smooth types like Kenny, not nice boys like him, but wants him to keep his distance. When she learns from Junior the drag race was Dani's idea, Kris hits her publicly, but Kenny uses a secret to prevent an assault complaint which would have put Kris back in jail. At the end Wildfire also comes to her again.
3Mothers
The farm's financial situation is so bad that mother Jean Ritter is preparing a sale of everything she can functionally spare, even despite emotional value, including her engagement ring. Meanwhile Kristen's mother Barb, who always was a lousy role-model, is back and succeeds in making the court accept a petition to let Kris go back home, and expects her to leave the ranch. When Jean's ring is stolen, both Kris and Barb are the obvious suspects, and Kris is convinced pills still drive her ma to crime. Matt and Kenny place bets with a certain Bobby. Finally the ring is returned anonymously and the thief owes up to Jean...
4Guilty
When Kristin rides Oklahoma Crude, Raintree's best prospect to earn badly needed prize money, the horse breaks a leg; an operation is a major financial risk, and Jeanne Rittter seriously considers selling Wildfire to pay for it. So Kris takes a waitress job in obligatory, too tight T-shirt, and thus gets willfully abused by Danielle Davis, while Kenny Junior over-tips her as compensation. She gets fired, and nearly charged and thus possibly send back to jail, for intervening when Matt Ritter's bookie Bobby grabs his unwilling girlfriend on the parking. After Jean admits to him she knew dad doctored the books and was very lucky their first tax audit ever was not more thorough, Matt decides at the last moment against betting despite his current debt with Bobby according to a system he just learned from Charlie Hewitt.
5The Claiming Race
To Kristens horror, Wildfire is entered for a sales race, and there's even a claimant, who must buy even if the horse loses...
6Lost and Found
Kris sees a herd of wild mustangs pass by, but so did four Raintree horses who joined them, including Wildfire and Houdini, mother Jean Ritter's favorite Mustang; Jean's ankle is hurt during yoga, so Matt and Kris must catch the horses in Chumash country before some rancher shoots them, legally; despite the unappealing conditions, Kenny 'Junior' Davis joins them for Kris's sake. Matt proves himself as tracker and spots cougar prey remains; Danni catches up a bit later, but by the time they find out the mustangs somehow got across the river it's too late, so they relax swimming in a waterhole, exchanging secrets and dancing; just when Kenny got to kiss Kris, a cougar scares them. Jean gets a surprise visit from Matt's dad Peter Ritter, who claims to be truly sorry and cured of his gambling addiction. Charlie tells Jean he's going a few weeks to Caracas on business. In the morning the kids find Houdini, dead- Matt decides to bury him there and first gets his ma.
7The Track
Kris may stress he'll never get anyway with her, Kenny 'Junior' insists they have dinner together. On the track Wildfire starts great but suddenly looses steam completely- he is diagnosed with a dangerous colic, probably from food. Matt and Kris investigate possible poisoners after finding some cattle feed in his trailer. When Matt gets threatened by his new bookie to pay his gambling bets, he thinks that was the poisoner as a warning and sells the motorbike he loved because his dad gave it to him. Pablo, Jean Ritter's new partner, insists they switch from conventional to holistic medicine and acupuncture. The other suspects is Carlos, a cattle feed trader who was once sacked because Raintree needed to downsize; this leads to a surprising culprit. Junior was glad Kris canceled their diner to watch Wildfire, goes check on his sister Danni who he finds in a girls clinic but not pregnant, gets Kris' cold shoulder when he turns up two hours late with Chinese takeaway but in the end convinces her anything together is romantic in his book.
8The Party
While Wildfire is still getting completely rid of the poison, kid brother Todd is away diving at the coast and mother Jean at a horse-show, Matt is alone doing some handy work and putting up a prefab bookcase in his room; Kenny 'Junior' Davis convinces him to hold a party at the ranch and invites Kris and loads of others- he takes care of everything except the bookcase he promised to assemble in Matts room. Bookie Bobby turns up, demanding immediate payment of the boys' debts, but when they help him catch four kids who wired cards info for about as much, he calls it quits. Another surprise party-goer is Kris' old friend Win Acosta from camp LeGrange, who is in trouble again and tells her a deal he made with the police helped get her in jail; after she rages at him he tries to commit suicide, but Mat stops him, thinking he attacks her. Junior is bothered by Molly Blitzer, from his posh prep school Davidson; his sister Dani tells black scholarship future colleague Evan Garvey that her mother is Spanish and abandoned her as a baby with her dad. The sheriff who came order the party noise turned down is Molly's brother, and sees her half-dressed with Junior, who however declares his love for Kris.
