5Substitute: Part 1
20 Sep 2009
Description ▼Eve is intrigued that her boyfriend, Ukrainian aid worker Stefan, has a bag full of different passports and chest bruises suggesting bullet wounds. She secretly takes his DNA and links it to the death of another aid worker, Briony Havers. Boyd, opposed by all the team but especially Eve, re-opens the Havers case. Stefan admits he knew Briony but denies murder. Eve believes him, particularly when he turns out to have saved the life of a girl called Olena when a ferry capsized. Olena was an unlawful immigrant, though, and Grace thinks Briony and Stefan were people traffickers and Briony was killed to silence her. At the club frequented by Ukrainians, where Eve met Stefan, some form of exchange is practised, involving Briony's ex-lover, Devlin. Eve resigns when Boyd breaks her cover by bringing Stefan to her lab. She is told that Olena worked in a hospital but when she gets there she finds it is derelict and she is overpowered.

Olena's corpse is discovered, along with jars of body parts. It is an unlawful live organ trade. Realising that Eve has gone to the only derelict hospital in the area, Boyd tracks her down. Devlin, the trafficking boss, is about to operate on her but Stefan saves her and brings her to Boyd, whilst Devlin and his henchmen escape. Stefan admits to Boyd that Devlin had a hold on him and Briony, and forced Briony to operate on Olena, later having Briony killed to frame Stefan. After Eve and Stefan leave for a weekend in a lakeside cabin, Boyd realises that Stefan has not been entirely honest. The false passports Eve found are to allow him to pose as a doctor for financial gain, and he purposely picked up Eve, knowing that she would defend him against the others. Boyd and the team arrive at the lake just as Devlin turns up and there is a shoot-out.

Description ▼Six years after the murdered corpse of an unknown young man was discovered in a reservoir Eve identifies him as medical student Karl Barclay. Karl's father Gideon takes the news stoically but his wife Lisbetta is superstitious and disturbed and sees her son as having brought Beelzebub into the family when he converted to Islam. Karl's younger brother Jakob and ex-girlfriend Naz speak of a letter Karl sent Naz before he disappeared but Eve believes it is a forgery and the team is also amazed to learn that Karl's body was cremated only days after its discovery. Lisbetta has buried several of Karl's belongings in the garden, including a train ticket to Manchester and a photo of Karl with his Muslim friends. She is hysterical when they are unearthed and later stabs Gideon, claiming that she killed Karl too. Sarah finds out that Karl's name was on a watch list of suspected terrorists, again probably due to his mother's paranoia.

04 Apr 2011
Description ▼Despite murdering her husband it seems unlikely the delusional Lisbetta killed Karl. Sought out by Jakob Naz says that Mohemmed, another group member, killed him before returning to Pakistan and Sarah's colleague from the terrorist squad Tristin also claims Karl was killed for refusing a bombing mission. However, after Boyd is abducted and tied to a bomb, leading Sarah into a trap from which she saves them both, she believes Tristin is lying. The experience also helps her overcome the operation for which she took the blame when one of her policemen was killed. Naz finally admits that she was in love with one of her Islamic contemporaries, which caused her to betray another to the authorities. The case is closed, though not to Boyd's satisfaction but Sarah withdraws all her objections to his leadership.
