Meanwhile, encouraged by "Atlantic Monthly" he started to write professionally. First novel "The Third Hour" appeared in 1937, followed by collection of short stories. Was unable to profit by success of "Rogue Male" (1937) as had already been posted to Rumania as an intelligence officer by the time it appeared. Remained in Middle East until 1945, and then had almost to start again as a writer.
