The lives and tragedies of the Braverman family tree.
A family tree with Zeke and Camille Braverman, serving as the patriarch and matriarch. After forty six years of marriage, they've managed to keep their foundation in tact, by burying their emotions underneath the surface for the sake of their now, adult children. Adam, the first born, is the ripest apple the tree has to offer. He runs a sneaker corporation, has a beautiful and supportive wife, two children (boy and girl) and a beautiful home to share with them. He's a dog short of The American Dream. Not to mention, he comes highly recommended as the "go to" guy. His siblings, comprised of good and bad apples, are Sarah, the unstable daughter, returning home at thirty eight years of age, with her two children, to live with Zeke and Camille. Crosby, the happy bachelor living in the now and on a docked boat, but has a g irlfriend pressuring him to have a child. And Julia, the baby Braverman and a successful shot calling lawyer, whose reduced her construction worker husband to "stay at home dad" status. Each family faces their own challenges, but how they propose to deal with them is what will keep them together or tear them apart.

25 Sep 2012Description ▼
Kristina and Adam deal with her breast cancer diagnosis. Max obsesses about the schools removal of some snack vending machines and decides to run for student body president to resolve that problem. Zeek is caught doing an illegal U-turn and the kids discover his license has been expired for over a year. Crosby reveals Zeek has had some heart problems. Zeek passes his retest. Sarah convinces Hank to take on a wedding photo-shoot.
Sarah gets a job with grumpy photographer Hank. Kristina sees her doctor and gets a diagnosis (we dont hear this) that gets her a hug from Adam.
Max and Micah navigate their schools crowded hallway to get to the vending machines next to the drinking fountain. When they get there, the machines have been removed. Max has an outburst.
Adam tries to make small talk with Kristina at the oncologists waiting room. Another patient, Gwen, pegs Kristina as a first-timer (she has her hair, her husband is with her, etc.).
At the photo shop, a young couple is talking to Sarah, worried that they dont have a photographer for their wedding this weekend. Hank claims he has a personal day and cant do it, and, to Sarahs dismay, the couple leaves. Hank explains to Sarah he does not do weddings.
Zeek is driving Max, Sydney, Jabbar, and Victor. Max is complaining about the vending machine situation when Zeek does a mid-street U-turn. A cop pulls them over; Zeek sees that he is young and is worried that the cop will be impatient. Zeek's license expired more than a year ago. He sees the cop writing him up and gets out of the car to explain. The cop tells him to get back in the car, and when Zeek continues to argue, the cop cuffs him.
The doctor is examining Kristinas breast and recommends a lumpectomy and soon. He was highly recommended, but he has made them sit in the waiting room for over two hours, is very cold to them, answers his cell phone during the exam, and is very direct and methodical and this rubs Kristina and Adam the wrong way.
Sarah is helping Mark make a salad. She is complaining to him about Hank not taking the wedding shoot. Mark tries to role-play Hank, and Sarah lets out that she is most angry that Hank is patronizing and insulting to her.
At the police station, Julia and Joel are grilling Sydney and Victor about the incident, while Crosby (with Jasmine and Jabbar) sees the whole thing as an adventure, and Adam (with Kristina and Max) is just confused. Zeek comes out of booking and blames all of it on the overzealous cop. Camille leads Zeek out of the station.
Adam, Sarah and Crosby are with Julia in her kitchen discussing Zeek. Julia guesses theres a serious reason why their dad has not renewed his license in over a year. Crosby reveals that Zeek is on heart meds and everyone freaks. Adam gets a text from Kristina reminding him to bring home dinner and leaves.
Adam confesses to Kristina that he does not like her doctor and they should at least get a second opinion. Kristina, appearing indifferent, agrees, seemingly just to make Adam happy.
At the recording studio, Adam comes in and Amber tells him that a client they had is going to another studio. Adam snaps at her about everything.
At their lockers, Micah is trying to talk to Max but Max is obsessing over the vending machines. He reminisces there was a time when kids could buy Skittles whenever they wanted. The other students laugh at him and walk away. Micah also leaves.
At a new doctors office, Kristina and Adam are happy that she is touchy-feely. She is very optimistic with Kristinas prognosis.
At the photo shop, Sarah confronts Hank. He claims he just doesnt do weddings. She reminds him that he doesnt seem to want clients at all, as their date book is empty.
Adam, Sarah, Julia and Crosby have a sit-down with Zeek. Zeek says he just forgot to renew the license. As they continue, Zeek storms out. Camille defends him and says the kids should be ashamed of themselves.
Adam finds Zeek in the garage. He tells Zeek he knows about his heart condition. Zeek says hell be alright, but you never know whats going to happen. Adam agrees.
Sarah tells Mark how frustrated she is with Hank. He sympathizes but asks to change to subject. She agrees but then they are silent.
Adam catches Kristina on the computer but she claims she is not going against the doctors advice and searching about breast cancer. Micah comes into the kitchen and asks to be taken home. He says Max is still obsessing and that they havent been playing at all. As Adam goes to talk to Max, Micah suggests to Kristina that she put Skittles in Maxs lunch box.
Camille is quizzing Zeek from a DMV manual as he is driving to his test. She agrees that the cop was probably an ageist; but worriedly points out to Zeek to keep a safe distance from the car ahead, and to stop at a flashing red.
Crosby finds Amber at the studio late. She tells him about Adam outburst. Crosby says thats just Adam and invites her to a session the next day so she can apprentice with him.
At home, late, Adam is surfing a cancer website with survival statistics. Kristina, getting ready for bed, looks at her breast in the bathroom mirror and holds back tears.
Adam tries to get Max to talk about what being a good friend with Micah means. Max is still obsessing about the vending machines.
Kristina meets Gwen at a café. Gwen tells her how people will behave differently toward her during the course of treatment. She also tells Kristina that the doctor is there to be her doctor, not her friend. Kristina confesses she cant talk to Adam about her cancer because he always tries to be positive and she feels she cant tell him she is scared.
Hank goes to Sarahs house and asks her to get ready for a job in five minutes . . . the wedding. She tries to pry an apology out of him for his behavior toward her, but he remains aloof.
At the studio, Adam tells Amber to pick up Max at school. She tells him she has a session with Crosby, but Adam insists. Amber defends herself and says she could be a more than a Girl Friday for them and that hes been unkind to her recently. Adam confides that Kristina is sick and apologizes and asks for Ambers understanding.
Amber picks up Max at school. Max tells her about the vending machines.
Zeek passes his test.
Sarah and Hank are at the end of the evening having a celebratory drink of wedding champagne at the bar. Out of ear shot, they laugh at the newlyweds and how the couple probably thinks the world is theirs. Sarah finds out Hank, like her, had been married. Sarah insists that this time her marriage will last forever.
At bed time, Kristina tells Adam she wants to go back to the first doctor. Adam reluctantly agrees. Max storms in and says hes running for student body president and will win and will convince the school board to return the vending machines.
Kristina keeps postponing her surgery. Sarah learns Hank has a daughter.

Kristina confesses all shes managed was a $25 donation from a retired teacher. Heather has arranged a meeting with Kristina with a millionaire developer, Harry Lerner. Kristina is worried because she is opposed to his downtown loft project. Lerner has already met with Bob Little but wants to keep an open mind. Kristina glares at Heather. Kristina says she admires his tenacity, but only says her focus as mayor is education. Julia goes to pick up the kids. Sydney is ready to go but Victor wants to finish disassembling a water pump. Zeke hands Victor the manual but he has a hard time reading it. It doesnt help when Sydney grabs the manual and reads it easily. Adam interrupts Crosbys Skype-chat with Jasmine to show him the financial projections on what would happen if they became a music label. Crosby says no band would want to sign with an inexperienced label. Adam recommends Romes band. Crosby reminds Adam that the band does not own their songs the label does. Adam promises to get the songs. Drew and Natalie are listening to Joni Mitchell. Natalie likes the music. He apologizes that he only says he liked Joni Mitchell because he thought SHE did. They listen to other music. Zeke doesnt want to pry but hes noticed Victors problem, too. Julias been trying to help Victor at night, but he just keeps falling behind. Amber tells Ryan she wants to get married at the lake. Zeke tells Victor that they will need help with the car, and that means reading the manual. Victor agrees to help. Ed was the only person she could talk to about that. Julia says that Ed must have gotten confused about their relationship because he kissed her. Joel asked where this happened and when she says Eds house, Joel flips. He had asked her previously if anything had happened between her and Ed and she said nothing, but she now explains that was true because in HER mind, nothing happened. Joel storms out. She doesnt think shell get it now since Hank has interviewed, and Hank muses about her portfolio with pictures of dogs. Alec comes to get Sarah. Pete and Joel are walking their client through the prototype but Joel is slow to give Pete the data she needs for the client. Hes a little obsessed about finding out and Sarah finally tells him it was Carl, whom Hank met previously on the night of the awards banquet (Hank calls him the Tux Guy). Hank rolls his eyes, insinuating, and then asks her if she is even qualified for the job and what lens she would use in a sunset. He warns her not to get in over her head and leaves. Pete enters the trailer and Joel automatically apologizes. Joel blames it on lack of sleep and family problems, and Pete says she doesnt care because this is his job. Jasmine tells him she used to dance professionally, but she was always unsure of dancing as a career. So she pursued dancing anyway because she wanted to know for sure. She asks Oliver if maybe hes worried about his career too and that finishing the album would mean having it out in the public domain for people to criticize. Adam thinks he should talk to Micahs parents but he doesnt think that would solve Maxs overall problem of the boys in school picking on him. Kristine doesnt think it will help Max for Adam to fight his battles but Adam tells her how defeated Max looked when Adam picked him up from school with all the boys around him. Hank sets up a beach scene on a table in his shop. Sarah is worried that she was hired because she had a certain vision, including on-site photography but Hank says they have a deadline and a budget and they wont be able to meet either with the possible problems of shooting at the beach. Hank asks if she got the job because she slept with Carl. Sarah is offended and tells Hank the world is not fair and that he should be thankful she asked him to be part of the job. Hank decides their partnership is not going to work and walks off. Crosby happily carries a pile of vending machine food into their small motel room and promises they can make it work. Jasmine doesnt think they can last more than a few days and they should consider staying with someone with extra available rooms. Crosby gets a call and the work men will need extra days. Joel and Julia make plans to tell the kids that afternoon. Julia asks Joel not to move out and that she can try harder. She asks him not to give up on her. Joel leaves. Kristina is with the mom at the IEP and she is unable to convince the board for extra help. At the Luncheonette with Adam, she expresses her frustration that she was not a better advocate for the mom. Adam tells her about Max and she is anxious to meet with the teacher and fix the situation. She misspeaks Mr. Wymans name as Mr. Hymen and promises to break him. Hank and Max are in the darkroom and Hank keeps talking about the beach. Max accuses him of perseverating and that people find it annoying. Hank tells Max he does the same thing. Hank is worried that Sarah will fail without his help but Max says that is moot since Sarah got the job and not Hank. Joel tells the kids and Sydney breaks down. Hank comes by as Sarah is packing here gear. He notes that it is sunny in Santa Cruz and even though that is not the way he would go, Sarah is the boss. Sarah grins. Mr. Wyman says Max is a distraction in class and is able to learn better independently. Adam thinks that is a cop out. Mr. Wyman has called the principal to join them and he apologizes that Mr. Wyman did not contact them when this all started, but the fact is that Max cannot do well in a classroom environment and the Mr. Wyman has trouble teaching when Max is in the class other than that, they are trying their best. Kristina says their best is unacceptable. Zeek doesnt think Camille is completely back (mentally) from Europe but he has never seen her happier. He thinks he has been holding her back from being happy and that he doesnt want to lose her. He recognizes that their marriage has been based on her making sacrifices, so Zeek is willing to sell the house so she can live her dream of travelling. Jasmine has done the calculations and they cannot keep staying at the motel. She tells him the solution is to stay at his parents. Joel leaves with the last of his bags. He says he will come by tomorrow morning to take the kids to school. Sarah and Hank make their shoot. He suggests they go get a drink to celebrate but she needs Hank to acknowledge that the day was worth celebrating. He does. The principal will move Max to a different history class. Kristina doesnt want Max to go to a public high school next year, but Max does not fit any of the local private special needs schools. She muses about opening a school themselves. Zeek welcomes Crosby and Jasmine. Julia stares at her empty bed. The kids come in saying they have stomach aches and cant sleep. Julia takes them to Zeek and Camilles. After Jabbar takes his cousins upstairs, Julia tells her parents her marriage may be over. NEXT Sarah has a dinner date with Carl and Hank wonders if it is turning into something. Crosby cant believe Zeek wants to sell the house. Carl tells Sarah he may be falling for her.
