1Sassenach
Six months after the end of World War II, Claire Randall and her husband Frank head to Scotland for a second honeymoon. They've been apart for 5 years with Claire having served as a front line nurse and this is a chance for them to get to know one another again. Frank is researching his own family history and they visit the ruins of Castle Leoch. Frank is particularly pleased when, with the help of a local minister, he comes across letters that mention his 18th century ancestor, Black Jack Randall, a British army officer who served in the area. When Claire goes off on her own and visits the site where they had watched Druid worshipers, she finds herself transported back in time to 1743. There she encounters Frank's ancestor and a handsome young Scot by the name of Jamie.
2Castle Leoch
Claire is brought to Castle Leoch under suspicion as an English spy. Learning that the year is 1743, she tries to arrange travel back to the standing stones. Colum MacKenzie uses her ability as a healer as an excuse to detain her. |
3The Way Out
Claire works diligently as the MacKenzie clan's healer hoping to gain their trust and perhaps be set free. When Mrs. Fitzgibbons' nephew falls ill - the locals believe it's demonic possession - Claire visits him to see if she can help. She comes into conflict with Father Bain who has been performing an exorcism to rid the boy of his evil spirits. When she determines that the boy has been poisoned, she administers a cure but also makes an enemy of the priest. Visiting Geillis Duncan in the village, Claire learns how thieves are dealt with. Just as she begins to feel there is no hope of ever returning to her husband, she hears a folk tale that describes exactly what has happened to her.
4The Gathering
The Gathering shows Claire's attempts at her first real planned escape. The run ins she has with various characters on the way including a major run in with Dougal and yet another moment with Jamie alone building their relationship. Also an Oath taking ceremony that could have awful results if not handled properly.
5Rent
Claire accompanies Dugal and other clansmen as they travel to various villages and collect rents. She befriends the clan's solicitor, Ned Gowan, who accompanies them to deal with records and receipts. She spends much of her time alone as the men gather around the campfires telling ribald tales, always in Gaelic, so as to exclude her. In the villages, they accept many forms of payment including money, grain and livestock. Claire is unsettled by how little the men seem to care for the villagers well-being and is surprised to see Dougal collecting money with which she believes he's lining his own pockets. She soon learns that the money is for an altogether different purpose.
6The Garrison Commander
Claire and Dougal are questioned at the local garrison, and Dougal is treated with hostility and disdain by the British occupiers. Claire lets down her guard, but her headstrong opinions get her into trouble again, and she discovers the true nature of Black Jack Randall when left alone with him.
7The Wedding
Marriage to a Scot seems to be the only legal wayout to save Claire from falling into the paws of Black Jack Randall. And Jamie accepts to become her husband and protect her. Claire is overwhelmed by circumstances that are forcing her into becoming an adulteress and a bigamist. The hasty marriage takes place and, in order to be legal, it must be consummated that night.
8Both Sides Now
In 1943, Frank continues his search for Claire, and the mysterious highlander. His efforts have so far been fruitless and he is losing hope. Meanwhile in 1743, Claire is getting a taste of what being Jamie's wife entails. While Jamie tries to clear his name, a forever changing opportunity arises for Claire.
9The Reckoning
Jamie and the others manage to rescue Claire from the hands of Black Jack Randall but Jamie is particularly upset with her for wandering off into the woods and getting caught in the first place. Harsh words are exchanged but Claire is prepared overlook anything he's said - but she isn't quite prepared for the punishment she receives at his hand for disobeying him and putting everyone's life in danger. They return to Castle Leoch where Jamie must explain to Laoghaire MacKenzie how it is he is now married. Colum MacKenzie meanwhile is none too pleased with their return, particularly that they were collecting money for the Jacobites.
10By the Pricking of My Thumbs
Jamie hopes the Duke of Sandringham can help remove the price on his head.
11The Devil's Mark
Geilis and Claire are imprisoned pending their trial for witchcraft. Geilis admits to Claire that she killed her husband Arthur, which isn't a surprise. She also admits that she is devoted to the Jacobite cause. The trial itself has all the makings of a one-sided affair but Ned Gowan arrives in time to provide both of them with something of a defense. The witnesses against them include Geilis' housemaid, a woman who bought a love potion from her and Laoghaire who claims Claire stole Jamie from her with magic. As the trial comes to an end, Ned tells the two women that the only solution is for Claire to save herself by denouncing Geilis. She refuses to do so but Geilis saves her - and reveals her great secret. Jamie takes Claire from the court and Claire tells him the truth about her past.
12Lallybroch
Jamie and Claire arrive at Lallybroch, where Jamie is lord of the manor. He's been away for four years and the reception he receives from his sister Jenny is frosty at best. She's now married to his old friend Brian and has a young son with another on the way. He plans on staying on, despite Claire's misgivings about being seen by the English. His attempt at being in charge doesn't go well and Jenny tells him he'll ruin the estate if he doesn't change his ways. They make their peace but soon learn there are other dangers as great as the English.
13The Watch
Life is anything but simple for Jamie and Claire when members of the Watch arrive for one of their regular visits. The Watch essentially protects the locals from the British, but for a price. Jamie thinks there no better than thieves, but Ian assures him they're the closest thing to an army that they have. Jamie is posing as a visitor but his secret but when a Redcoat deserter from his past, Horrocks, arrives he finds himself being blackmailed. Having dealt with his blackmailer, Jamie has little choice but to join the Watch. Penny meanwhile, goes into labor and with the village midwife away, Claire will have to deliver the baby in what becomes a difficult birth.
14The Search
Ian has survived the ambush and has returned to Lallybroch telling Claire that Jamie has been taken prisoner by the British. She and Jenny set out to find to find him and soon come across the British patrol. They quickly spot Taran MacQuarrie but there's no sign of Jamie. They intercept a British courier and learn that Jamie has in fact escaped. While Jenny returns home to care for her newborn, Claire is joined by Murtagh Fraser and they set off in search of Jaime. Murtagh's approach is to let their presence be known and once Jamie hears they are about, he will contact them. He presses Claire to sing in pubs - she uses a very modern melody - but contact is slow in coming. When she does finally get the long-awaited message, it turns out to be from Dougal MacKenzie and he has bad news - Jamie has been caught and is being held in Wentworth prison.

16To Ransom a Man's Soul
Murtagh's plan to save Jamie works and he and Claire find shelter in a monastery. Jamie was severely beaten by Randall and repeatedly raped. As Claire tries to treat his wounds, Jamie relieves the brutality and rape he suffered at the hands of Black Jack Randall. Finally managing to break through to him, they realize they cannot stay in Scotland and set sail for France. Claire has important news for him.
1Through a Glass, Darkly
Claire impresses upon Jamie the need to stop the Jacobite rebellion and prevent the deaths of hundreds of Highlanders, to which end they travel to France to impress upon Charles Stuart not to stake his claim with an invasion. They are given work by Jamie's wealthy wine merchant cousin Jared but fall foul of the Comte St Germain, when Claire insists his ship be burnt following an outbreak of smallpox amongst the crew.
2Not in Scotland Anymore
Claire and Jamie set about making influential friends in their efforts to stop the Jacobite rebellion after Jamie fails to convince Charles Stuart of the futility of an invasion. Securing an invitation to Versailles - where Jamie cures the king's constipation - they make the acquaintance of lustful Minister of Finance Duverney, as well as re-encountering the Duke of Sandringham, a Jacobite supporter. Claire befriends Mary Hawkins, a shy young English girl betrothed to be married but more interested in the duke's young secretary Alexander Randall. He is the younger brother of Black Jack whom Claire is alarmed to learn is still alive.

4La Dame Blanche
Claire and Jamie throw an elaborate dinner party intended to derail investors in Prince Charles' war effort. Claire and Mary were attacked by a group of bandits. Mary Hawkins has been raped by them but bandits fly the scene after having look at Claire and calls her La Dame Blanche. Unintended guests arrive at the dinner party. The dinner has been disturbed by an horrific incident.
5Untimely Resurrection
After the dinner party, Claire tends to Mary (and Alex), while Jamie deals with Charles' plotting. A visit to Versailles leads to turmoil for Claire and Jamie. |
6Best Laid Schemes...
Jamie and Claire use Claire's medical knowledge to devise a scheme to stop a wine deal which could fill the Prince's war chest. When Claire learns Jamie has gone back on his word, the couple is met with dire consequences that will forever change their lives.
7Faith
Having collapsed at the duel the pregnant Claire wakes in hospital to find that her child is still-born and Jamie arrested for duelling. The king grants him a pardon but only after Claire has had sex with him and helped him in the trials of Monsieur Raymond and St Germain, both accused of sorcery, which gives her the opportunity to save a friend and dispose of an enemy. Following their daughter's funeral Claire and Jamie decide to return to Scotland.
8The Fox's Lair
Claire and Jamie return to Scotland, and back to their home, Lallybroch. Away from the nightmares of Paris, they find solace until a letter arrives. Jamie must go and visit his grandfather Lord Lovat, Simon Fraser aka The Old Fox. Claire accompanies Jamie to meet The Old Fox.
9Je Suis Prest
Jamie trains his militia men for the upcoming Rising before joining the forces. Claire keeps to Jamie and gives him full disclosure on what little she knows about Scotland's fate in the Rising. Meanwhile, a young British soldier tries to kill Jamie.
10Prestonpans
Jamie's men reach Charles Stuart's camp where, unlike Claire, Jamie believes he can change history and is put in command after Stuart's commanders argue amongst themselves as to strategy. A young local shows Jamie a hidden path, allowing the Highlanders to creep up on the English army, taking them by surprise and thus winning the battle of Prestonpans. There are many casualties on both sides, including some of Jamie's closest friends, and Claire is kept busy in her field hospital. She also reminds Jamie that, whereas she was right about the Scots winning at Prestonpans, her prediction regarding the outcome at Culloden will be just as accurate.
11Vengeance Is Mine
Jamie is included in the group of riders enlisted for Dougal. Claire also joins them. When consequences forced Jamie to give up Claire to British Officers as a Scottish prisoner, Claire is sent to visit an English Aristocrat for investigation on one of her Scottish captors, Red Jamie. Surprising revelations are made. Meanwhile, Jamie is desperate to get his wife back.
12The Hail Mary
As Jamie puts all of his efforts into turning the Jacobite army away from the impending slaughter at Culloden Moor, Claire attempts to comfort the sick Alex Randall. She is stunned when Alex reveals an outrageous plan to save the mother of his child.
13Dragonfly in Amber
Flashing forward to 1968, Claire travels to Scotland with her twenty-year-old daughter, Brianna, and meets Roger Wakefield. Claire visits Lallybroch and Culloden Moor to make peace with the past, while Brianna and Roger bond over researching Randall family history. Claire finally reveals the truth to Brianna about her time travel through the stones, her life in 1700's Scotland, and Brianna's true parentage. The story is inter-cut with another one back in the 18th century, which happens on the day of the Battle of Culloden. When Jamie's last ditch attempts to deter The Prince fail, he and Claire come up with a dangerous plan - which Dougal overhears, inciting him to a murderous rage. Jamie must do everything he can to save the ones he loves, even if it means saying goodbye to some-or all-of them.
