In exchange for her freedom, she agrees to protect one of the targets of a Section sting -- a target who happens to be the son of Section's top exec."This episode opens with Operations visiting Nikita's apartment late at night. He tells her there is a mission coming up and he wants one of the men (Steven Wolf) Nikita will be working with to be protected by her. Operations also doesn't want Steven to know about him. When Nikita asks what makes Steven so special, Operations tells her that Steven is is son.The mission is to steal a chip before Steven's team can and offer it to them for a share of the profits from its sale to a terrorist name Broson. Nikita poses as a security guard at the company where the chip is stored. She approaches Steven's team at a diner and proposes the deal. Michael poses as a scientist willing to steal the chip for them. They hold Nikita until Michael comes back with the chip. He has until midnight to return.Michael breaks into the vault where the chip is stored only to find out that the chip is missing. He has to stop the chip's transport to the airport. He requests a backup team to take out Steven's crew in case he fails, but Operations denies his request. Michael rides the roof of the van transporting the chip. He takes out the escort car by shooting its tires and gets the chip from the back of the van.Dean, a member of the crew, hits on Nikita throughout the night, implying that he will rape her before he kills her. Steven stands up for her and is about to fight with Dean, but Nikita steps in and takes care of him by kneeing him in the balls and disarming him. Michael comes in the apartment right at midnight just as she's about to be shot. They verify that it is the chip and let Michael and Nikita go.When Nikita gets home, Operations is there waiting for her. They argue about the lack of a backup team. Nikita demands her freedom from Section in return for her protecting his son. Operations gives her his word before leaving. He then calls Michael in to Section with orders to keep an eye on her.Nikita has videotaped her conversation with Operations and she takes it to a safe place. Nikita and Steven go to meet the buyer's representative. Steven tells her that she reminds him of his father. Steven doesn't believe that his father is dead. He tells Nikita that his father was a PoW (Prisoner of War) in Vietnam and that he inspired all the other prisoners not to break. He was the only one not released at the end of the war. Steven's motivation for acquiring all this money is to find his father. Operations is listening to this conversation and it is obvious that he is affected by his son's devotion. At the final meet, Michael hands over the codes for the chip and Broson's car pulls up. Steven's team hands over the chip and Broson's men verify that it is real. As Steven is verifying the money, the shooting begins. The other two members of Steven's team die. Steve is convinced that Michael double-crossed them and he goes to shoot Michael. Nikita shoots Steven to save Michael. After Section is done cleaning up the mission site, Nikita helps Steven up; she had shot him with a tranquilizer. He inquires about the money and says he will find it another way when Nikita tells him its gone. She tries to dissuade Steven from wasting his life looking for his father. The episode ends with Nikita calling in Operations's promise. He tells her he tried, but was unable to get her out. Expecting this, Nikita tells him about the videotape and how it is intended to go to Steven. Operations pulls the tape out of his pocket and leaves Nikita wondering whether or not it was Michael who stole the tape.

"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, especially if the knowledge is about Section. A police investigation of a serial rapist inadvertantly puts him too much in the way and too much in the know."Nikita and Michael are on a mission when this episode opens. They are staking out an embassy, waiting for a certain high ranking official from that country to exit. They call the mission quits for the day and split up to return to Section. On her way back to Section, Nikita is accosted by a man who tries to rape her. She beats him up. As she is leaving, she looks up and sees a woman standing in a window watching them. When Nikita returns to Section, she tells Michael and Operations there was no exposure. She then goes back to the scene of the crime to make sure she has not been found out. The would-be rapist is getting medical attention. One of the detectives finds the screwdriver he had used as a weapon. The police figure out that he is the serial rapist/killer they have been looking for, and they get a description of Nikita from the witness, hoping she will testify against this man.Walter warns Nikita to make this situation go away or else the innocent detective will be taken care of by Section. The detective comes to Nikita's home and confronts her, asking for her help in putting this man away. She refuses to admit she was the woman the rapist attacked. The detective shows her pictures of the other women, all of whom are dead. She makes the detective leave and after he is gone, she notices he stole her waterglass.Nikita's friend Karla is dating a man named Kevin. Karla is heads over heels for this guy, but he comes to Nikita's apartment one day and says he's not serious about her. He hits on Nikita and she smashes his face on the countertop before kicking him out of her apartment. The detective follows Nikita to her next mission at a restaurant/art gallery. The government official is to meet a man whom Section wishes to take down. The detective walks up to Nikita and tells her she looks good for someone who killed herself in prison three years ago. Michael tells Nikita to "deal with him" a.k.a. kill him. Nikita keeps trying to make the detective go away and Michael must come help her. The terrorist notices the fight and shoots the government official before getting away.Back at Section, Nikita is in trouble. Birchoff won't look at her. Michael won't answer her questions regarding the detective. Even Walter is short with her. So she goes to Madeline. Madeline explains that if Nikita had come to them before, they could have given the detective what he wanted without ruining Nikita's cover. Nikita asks for one last chance to make things right.Nikita meets the detective to discuss their options. She offers to make the rapist "disappear" in exchange for the detective forgetting she exists. He declines the offer. The next mission is to recover the terrorist who got away. Nikita is in the van with Birchoff while Michael's team goes in. Birchoff mentions the cop but won't share what he knows with Nikita. Michael's team captures the terrorist and the mission is a success. The next scene opens with the rapist coming out of a store; he's been set free because there is no witness to testify against him. The police have been following him, but they've lost track of him. The detective's phone rings and he's told to trace the call for the rapist's location. He goes to the location looking for the rapist and finds him dead. Nikita is waiting for him. She takes the detective's gun and shoots the rapist, framing him for murder. She offers him a deal; come work for Section or be convicted of murder. In the next scene, the detective is in a room just like Nikita's frm the first episode. Michael walks in and tell the detective everything he told Nikita: "This is Section One. This is where you'll train." He attacks Michael just like Nikita did and is subdued just like Nikita was.The episode ends with Karla coming to Nikita, upset because her boyfriend broke up with her. Nikita goes back to Section and is told the detective accepted their offer. Madeline tells Nikita, "You're one of us." Nikita replies that she will never be one of them, but it obvious by the expression on her face that she's starting to waiver.

"Section needs a volunteer, and Nikita is the one volunteered. She's subjected to a mind-control machine that's come into the organization's possession...and secretly falls under the machine's deadly sway."This episode opens with Operations briefing the team on a terrorist who was found dead. They searched his contacts and found only one name they did not know. Nikita's mission is to make contact with this man and try to find out who he is. She goes to the restaurant where he tends bar and scans his fingerprint when he brings her drink to her. Birchoff's voice and fingerprint scans confirm that it is him. Nikita asks him if he knows Jason Daro (the dead terrorist) and Birchoff's scan of his response indicates that he is telling the truth; he doesn't know the terrorist. The man then grabs a barstool, throws it through the window, and jumps to his death...smiling the whole time.Section searches the man's apartment and finds a machine called a phasing shell. Birchoff and Walter have differing opinions on how to test it. Birchoff explains the difference between the phasing shell and virtual reality: in VR, you are passive, just watching...in the phasing shell, you are active and change the outcome. Birchoff says to fully understand the machine, they need a person to use it; Nikita is volunteered.Nikita steps into the machine and watches as pictures flash by. Birchoff explains that the program is searching for a response to a familiar scene. Nikita sees an old memory from her childhood, a bunch of children picking on her and beating her up. She grabs a stick from one of the boys and scares them all away. During her debrief with Madeline, she says it feels as though a weight has been lifted from her shoulders; one she wasn't even aware of having.Birchoff and Walter are still testing the shell. Birchoff finds out that the software for the machine was loaded five times, meaning there are four other machines out there still. Madeline says the only act an untrained person can successfully complete is a suicide assassination. That night at home, Nikita has trouble resting. The images keep coming back to her and her vision blurs. She goes to bed, but begins hallucinating that one of her mother's old (abusive) boyfriends is in the apartment. She defends herself but every time she shoots or throws something, he disappears. Michael comes to the door and asks if she's ok. Nikita tells him she's fine and doesn't let him in.The next day, Michael finds Madeline studying the machine. He is worried about Nikita and wants to know what Section knows. Madeline explains the designer's personality based on the model. Birchoff has spent time searching the images looking for clues. He finds one with a company logo; Madeline has Michael assemble their team. Nikita goes to Walter and volunteers to help them test the shell again. He warns her that it is dangerous and to stay away from it.Michael poses as an employee and sneaks into the company. Michael kidnaps the woman in charge, but she yells for the guards and is shot in the crossfire.Nikita sneaks into the room where the shell is kept and uses the machine. She wants to battle her mother's old boyfriend. When he is beating on her, his face changes. She defeats him and once again experiences the high of winning. Just as she's leaving, Walter comes in and catches her. She tells him she doesn't care that it is dangerous, that the machine is helping her get rid of the things that have been holding her back.Walter tells Michael about Nikita's using the shell, while Birchoff is searching for the injured woman's background. Madeline goes to see her and tells her she is dying. She refuses to give up the target, but is willing to talk about the shell. She explains what Nikita's been experiencing; that it helps the person fight their demons and let go of the past. The shell puts a new face on the person's terror, the face of the target...making him the new enemy. Madeline talks to the woman about the Chinese Premier and figures out he is the target by listening to the heartrate monitor. The mission is now to prevent the other conditioned people from killing the Premier. Michael comes to see Nikita again. She closes the door without letting him and he breaks the door down. She has the look of an addict going through withdrawals and he promises to help get through this after the mission.Once on the mission, Nikita has trouble focusing; she sees flashes of the memories from the shell. The Premier arrives as Birchoff is realizing just how potent the shell is...and that Nikita may be affected. Nikita is rubbing her ear as she's having the flashes and she sees another man doing the same thing. When they remove him from the scene, he has a gun. Michael tells Nikita to help escort the Premier out of the building. Michael shoots another person and Nikita gets the last, saving the Premier. Now Nikita becomes the problem, attempting to shoot the Premier. Michael deflects the gun just in time and she collapses in his arms.In the final scene, Nikita returns to the room where the shell is kept. She's disheveled and it looks as though she hasn't conquered her addiction. Michael enters the room as Nikita is smashing it. He tells her it is ok and that they will get her through this.

"Judge, jury, executioner. A band of insurgents is bent on becoming all three when it overruns the Inaugural Ball of a strife-torn nation's new leader. Among the hostages held by the rebels: Nikita."This episode opens with Nikita window shopping at a vendor's cart in a park. She sees Michael and is about to approach him to say hi when he begins talking to another woman, someone Nikita doesn't know. The woman is visibly upset and Michael calms her down before walking her to her car. Nikita follows them and watches as Michael kisses the woman on her cheek and puts her in the car. As Michael turns to walk away, the car explodes.During Operations' opening scene brief, it is revealed that the woman who died was a source of Michael's. She had told Michael that Mijovich (a character from a previous episode) has been elected to lead his country and there will be an attempt on his life at his Inaugural Ball. Nikita will pose as his date for the evening.Michael and the other operatives have trouble finding someone who will meet Griffon's (the hitman) profile. None of the men present are young enough. Operations suggests that Griffon may be a woman; Michael sees her just as she's about to shoot Mijovich. Michael and the other agents exit the building with Griffon. As Nikita is reassuring Mijovich that the assassin is dead, men disguised as waiters begin shooting. Nikita is the only operative still inside. The men release everyone except for Mijovich and five reporters. Nikita demands that she stay by Mijovich's side. The men take everyone to another room and the leader Brunen explains why they are there. He calls Mijovich a butcher and accuses him of leading the attack on his village's women and children (the men were away fighting). Michael relays information from Operations to Nikita that Mijovich was in a peace conference in Brussels when this man's village was destroyed. Nikita persuades Brunen to bring his only surviving daughter to them as a witness.Meanwhile, Birchoff and Michael are looking for a way for Michael to sneak back into the building. Mijovich assures Nikita that while he may have done things he wasn't proud of during the war, he never hurt women or children. The daughter, named Maria, comes in and it is revealed that she is blind. She tells her story. The soldiers came to their village, killed the young children and the old women. They tortured, mutilated, and raped the young women. She says the leader raped her, blinded her, and left her for dead. Maria confirms that Mijovich was the man by the sound of his voice. Nikita interrupts and wants Maria to be 100% positive that Mijovich is the man. Nikita and Maria argue back and forth on whether or not Maria is sure and whether or not Nikita knows what true pain is. By the end of the arguement, Maria is no longer sure if Mojivich is the man who hurt her.Michael's plan to divert Brunen is for himself and another operative to attack. The other operative must die or be captured so Brunen will think a rescue attempt has failed. During the firefight, the other operative is killed and Michael sneaks into the building's ventilation system. Nikita tries to tell Michael that there's been a mistake and there are no bad guys. Michael assures her there are always bad guys.Brunen is about to send his daughter away when Nikita stops him. Maria and Nikita agree that if Mijovich cannot be identified as the man, then it is not worth the country's continued war just to kill Mijovich for revenge. Nikita asks Maria to think back on the day and remember something discernable about the man who hurt her.Maria begins describing the event as Michael approaches the room in the ventilation shaft. One of Brutus' men hears Michael in the shaft and goes to investigate what the noise was. As he climbs into the vent, Michael kills him and drags him inside.Maria remembers that the man wore a ring and she reaches out for Mijovich's hands. He is not wearing a ring and says he has never worn a ring before. Maria says it does not matter; if they kill Mijovich, there will be a war and thousands more will suffer like she did.Michael is about to attack when Nikita says it can end peacefully. Operations gives her one minute to fix the situation. Nikita and Mijovich argue back and forth regarding Brunen's prison sentence, before Mijovich concedes and promises he will never see the inside of a prison. Brunen agrees to end the "trial" and releases the reporters. As the group makes their way through the kitchen, Brunen notices a small stream of blood dripping down the wall. He finds his man and begins shooting. Michael comes in and a firefight ensues. Brunen is about to shoot Mijovich and Nikita shoots him to save Mijovich. Maria begins crying and screaming for her father. Nikita helps her to his body and watches her mourn. Mijovich attempts to comfort Nikita. She looks down and sees a ring line on Mijovich's finger. She's so angry, she almost pulls a gun on Mijovich, but Michael stops her.The episode ends with Nikita telling Michael she thinks Maria knew Mijovich was guilty...that she pretended in order to save her country. She then confronts Michael with Operations' lie about Mijovich being in Brussels. She says she doesn't know how much longer she can keep this up and leaves.

"Total obedience. That's what's expected of Nikita. But she doesn't have the heart to obey an order to destroy a naïve young inventor...and Section responds by sending her on a suicide mission."This episode opens with Michael and Nikita dancing at a romantic restaurant. It is quickly revealed that they are on a mission. The man they're watching meets someone at the bar and exchanges a film canister. The team splits up to follow to two men as they part. Nikita asks if they're done and Michael replies, "After this dance."Section finds that the mystery man (Spidel) from the bar is a legitimate businessman with no ties to anything bad. Spidel has made a business arrangement with a chemist named Shays who claims to have invented an explosive that cannot be detected. Tyler, the original man from the bar, slips his sample into a woman's purse and watches as she goes through airport security with no difficulties.Walter refuses to believe that the chemist has successfully created this explosive. Michael, Walter, and Nikita go with Spidel to meet Shays, where they will verify Shays' story. Walter puts a sample of the explosive in a canister and wheels it out into the field. When he punches the button for the explosion, nothing happens. As he's walking back talking about how he knew it wouldn't work, the explosion goes off and is much larger than anyone expected.Madeline reports back to Operations that the test was successful and its blast was three times the standard C4. They decide to confiscate the explosive and turn Spidel and Shays over to the NSA. Nikita and Shays talk while he is packing up his things. Their conversation reveals his innocent and naive nature.Birchoff briefs Operations about a plane explosion that Tyler is responsible for. Operations orders Tyler to be brought in and wants to know where Shays is. At that same moment, Shays is being kidnapped by Tyler's men. Spidel and the NSA agents are dead.Shays is taken to an unknown location where he meets Tyler and his team of scientists. They want to know how he made the explosive; they want his formulas. He doesn't want to share the information with them because they will use it for terrorism. They threaten his life and he writes down the formula for them.Nikita had placed a tracker on Shays when she hugged him goodbye and Birchoff tracks it to Shays location. Operations sends Michael's team in to recover Shays before he gives the formula to Tyler. Nikita finds Shays tied to a chair with a bomb strapped to his chest. He tells her that he gave Tyler a bogus formula and she promises to get him out of there.Nikita reports to Michael saying she found Shays and needs help getting him out. Michael sees incoming hostiles and tells Nikita to cancel Shays so he can't give Tyler the correct formula. Shays, unaware of this order, is so relieved to be rescued he starts babbling about growing a diamond for Nikita. Just as she's about to pull the trigger, she chickens out and leaves Shays behind. Michael asks Nikita if she cancelled Shays and she says she couldn't do it in cold blood. When they get back to Section, Michael tries to cover for Nikita but gets in trouble by Operations. Meanwhile, Shays has been found out as a liar; his formula didn't work. Tyler's men strap him to a table and run industrial size screws through his feet to make him talk.Nikita goes to see Madeline, asking for reassurances. She wants to know that when the Section is done with her, that she will be set free. She's looking for something to cling to, a hope, that one day her life can be hers again. Madeline tells her she will never be free from the Section. Nikita thanks her for giving her a straight answer and leaves. She goes home to her apartment and writes the following suicide note:
"The only sins I ever committed were on behalf of the Section. I'm only guilty of not taking charge of my own destiny. My fake obituary claimed I died in prison. In the end, that statement is true."She then pulls out her gun and is about to shoot herself when Michael knocks on her door. She decides to answer it and lets him in. He tells her that he can't protect her anymore. He doesn't understand why she can't just do the job without questions and problems. She once again explains that she's not who Section thinks she is, that she never killed the cop from the first episode. He tells her it is not important what she did, it's what she chooses to do now. In a very rare display of affection, Michael touches Nikita's cheek and hugs her before saying, "I wish things could be different."When Michael returns to Section, Operations calls him into his office and explains the next mission: to destroy the building and, with it, Shays. The mission will be a suicide mission, using abeyance operatives. The only people to return will be Michael, Walter, and Birchoff. As the operatives come toward Michael to get in the van, he counts them. The first five come together in a group. Moments later, the sixth comes around the corner and Michael is shocked. It's Nikita. She gets in the van and Michael turns to look behind him. Madeline is standing there.Shays is still strapped to the table. He begs Tyler to let him go, but Tyler explains that for every weapon they create, the other side finds a defense. He needs Shays to help him stay ahead. He turns up the morphine drip in Shays' IV and tells him he will be addicted for the rest of his life.In the van, Nikita has to help one of the other operatives. He thanks her and tells her he hasn't been out in three months because he screwed up in Zaire. Michael explains the mission to everyone, minus the detail about them all dying. As they're exiting the van, Michael hands Nikita a secondary comm unit and tells her they will be able to communicate if her first comm unit goes down. The team goes in and plants their charges. As they're about to exit, Michael tells Birchoff to have them hold their positions. Birchoff is shocked, but does as he's told. Walter yells at Michael because Nikita's in there. He goes to grab a comm unit and warn everyone, but Michael stops him. Nikita is still moving; her comm unit has gone down as Michael predicted. However, she's trying to rescue Shays instead of exiting the building. He is shot by one of Tyler's men. Her secondary comm unit begins buzzing. It tells her about the suicide mission and that she's free to run. She gets out of the building just as it explodes.Section is fooled; they think Nikita died in the blast. Operations tells Michael that he hopes Michael understands Section's position regarding Nikita. After he leaves, Madeline predicts problems with Michael in the future because of his and Nikita's bond. Michael goes back to his office and sends a message to Nikita asking if she's there. Nikita sees the message but instead of responding, she turns the unit off.
