Kim upsets two gay men who want to put a sign in his convenience store window about a gay pride parade...when one of the men threatens to report Kim for being prejudice, Kim offers a 15% (first 50%discount but Kim lowers it after the two men leave his store) to all gays during the gay pride week...Kim says he has great 'gayar' and during the episode he gives the discount to those he believes, correctly, to be gay..even if the customer isn't sure yet. 2Janet's Photos
Despite Janet doing well in her photography classes at the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD), Appa believes he's as good a photographer if not better than anyone at OCAD, including Janet, especially as all his photographs are bright, have cheery subject matters, and are centered, unlike Janet's which often depict the darker side of life and as such are often purposefully off focus. To prove his point, Appa starts displaying his photographs for sale at the store. In the process, his artistic pride takes a backseat to his entrepreneurial side. What ends up happening, about which Janet does not know, may cause her some issue as she has been asked at the last minute by Ms. Murray to display her photos at OCAD's open house. Meanwhile, Jung decides to apply for the assistant manager position at the car rental agency, as he is trying to turn his life around, while in the process make a little more money. His application has three decidedly different reactions. Kimchee doesn't understand...
3Ddong Chim
Gerald's request to Appa to photograph him for a class assignment meets with some skepticism from Appa, until... After the incident which makes him change his mind (the incident which fulfilled Gerald's class assignment needs), Appa does whatever in his power not only to get Gerald to take the photo, but take the type of photo he wants for himself as opposed to what Gerald may want. Appa trying too hard to get that photo may prove to be problematic. Janet is all right with Gerald's request and Appa's subsequent "commissioning" of Gerald for that photo, but it is something else that makes Janet feel like Appa and Umma believe that Gerald is a better photographer than her. While not damaging her self-confidence, it may damage her relationship with her parents without them even knowing what's going on. Meanwhile, Jung and Kimchee's new manager/employee relationship is tested when Jung deals with Kimchee trying to take advantage of Jung's new managerial perks by Jung doing something to ...
4Frank & Nayoung
Appa and Umma's eighteen year old niece Nayoung is coming from Korea for a visit, she who the Kims have not seen in years. Janet and Nayoung acted like best friends when they last saw each other when they were children. Prior to Nayoung's arrival, Umma, despite knowing that Nayoung is a sweet girl, has her own critical opinions of her based solely on what she sees on social media - that opinion being that Nayoung looks like a slut as do many Korean girls her age in Korea - while Janet thinks her mother's criticisms are just her being out-dated. However, as Janet and Nayoung spend more and more time together, Janet seems to want it both ways, in being more Korean as she has always been the "exotic Korean" one among her friends, while being not as stereotypically eighteen year old Korean girl as Umma believes Nayoung is, a belief to which Janet is slowly coming herself with respect to Nayoung. Meanwhile, the portable air conditioning unit in the store has broken. Appa tries to fix it ...
5Wingman
Single Mr. Chin believes that he may be on the verge of romance when his Russian barber, Illyanka, tells him that she and her Russian friend Natalia will be hanging out at a martini bar, and invite him along. Wanting a fourth for Natalia, Mr. Chin asks Appa to be his wingman, which he is happy to do. But Appa's attempts to lay the groundwork to get Umma's permission to "date" another woman don't quite go according to Appa's plan, as Umma sees the outing as a good opportunity for a night out on the town for five, meaning that Umma tags along. As such, the evening has the potential to go off the rails with Umma and Appa's different goals for the outing, those differences which may work their way back home. With Appa and Umma out for the evening, Janet volunteers to mind the store, and to check on the leak in the store ceiling without calling in professional help. Janet doesn't call professional help but help of another kind: Jung, who has not been back to the store since he was sixteen ...

12Appa's Lump
Enrique, a nurse who is one of the store's regulars, finds a lump on Appa's back, the lump which Enrique, in his professional opinion, believes Appa should have checked by a doctor. Appa is worried but doesn't want to see a doctor fearing the worst. He instead decides to do some Internet-based self-diagnosis. He also doesn't want anyone in the family to know. These items in combination are why he is so short with Umma and Janet, even when Janet has the good news that she will be the recipient of the Eleanor Bradshaw Award for Excellence - she the first ever first year student to receive the award - to be presented at the Dean's dinner tonight to which the entire family is invited. When Umma and Janet eventually do find out about the lump and Appa goes to the doctor to check it out, Appa is advised to have it removed immediately which would require a short hospitalization. This news leads to a conundrum, about which each member of a the family has a different opinion: should Appa go ...
13Family Singing Contest
It's time for the annual family music festival at the church, it a friendly competition that is far more competitive than anyone would like to admit. Umma remembers back to the last time their family entered in 2003 and won, it the happiest time of her life not only because of the victory but because they did something together as a family in the name of God. Umma wants to enter again, and although she outwardly states that in doing so is to praise Jesus, it's really to show up competitive Mrs. Park, who expects to win. However, Umma wants to sing with Jung, who admittedly has a good voice, but not Janet, whose voice she considers weak. Umma slyly tries to maneuver the family entry the way she wants. Beyond the issue of beating Mrs. Park and her family, the Kim entry doesn't happen quite the way Umma envisions for various reasons. One of those reasons concerns Janet, who wants to get Umma in a good mood before she drops a bombshell of some news. Meanwhile, Appa's minivan is broken, so...
1Janet's Roommate
Janet wants to move out and she is all set to go when one of her two room mates drop out. Her parents raise objections to her moving in with just one room mate as he is male. Janet's Mum is sad about her leaving but Janet is determined and so a solution must be found.
2Business Award
The general scuttlebutt by those hanging out at the store is that Appa will win this year's Moss Park Business Association Businessperson of the Year award, which he's never won in all the years the store has been in operation. When the award winner is announced, it ends up causing a rift between Appa and Umma, which is only exacerbated by the winner's cover page photograph in the community newspaper prominently on display on the store's counter where Appa can continually gaze at it. Meanwhile, there is also a rift forming between new roommates Janet and Gerald, who can only see the bad in the other roommate, while not recognizing their own idiosyncrasies which may be causing them also to be a bad roommate. And Jung has been riding his bike into work. Even though it's only because he doesn't have enough money to buy a car, Shannon still admires his commitment to his health and the environment. As such, Jung decides to buy Shannon a refurbished bike if only to have her as a bike buddy,...
3House Guest
Umma invites Pastor Nina to stay with her and Appa in Janet's now vacant room while Pastor Nina's own apartment is undergoing renovations. Appa and Umma don't feel a need to Christianize their abode, but rather de-sin it in preparation for Pastor Nina's stay. Beyond these measures, Umma discovers something in the room after Pastor Nina's arrival that she doesn't know if it belongs to Pastor Nina or Janet. Either way, the discovery leads to both speculation by Appa and Umma of who it belongs to and concern for the change in perception they would have about that person. Meanwhile, it's Friday night, and Jung has nothing to do, so he invites himself over to Janet's to hang out with her and her friends who are planning to play a trivia game. Although Jung does get something more closely aligned to him as a person out of the evening, the events of the evening do make him wonder if he is stupid, something he's never thought about before.
4Cardboard Jung
Handy has used Jung's image in a hiring campaign. After the campaign's end, Shannon gives one of the life-sized cardboard cutout images of Jung to Umma for her to keep. Umma bringing anything of Jung back into the house leads to Appa trying to come to terms with what happened between him and Jung. This cardboard image of Jung may be only the first step in bringing real Jung back in, or it may show Appa that the old feelings which led to Jung leaving are still front and center in his mind. Meanwhile, Nayoung is coming for a visit from her home base of Waterloo, she who will be staying with Janet, with Gerald, who has ulterior motives, having given up his room for Janet's cousin. Nayoung's visit has the potential to be uncomfortable for Janet as Nayoung has brought some of Janet's old letters written when they were kids. One of those letters contains information which Janet may find embarrassing if it came to light, especially to certain people. That old information has some present day...
5Date Night
Janet is happy to work at the store on her parents' newly instituted date nights. Janet isn't quite as happy when she learns that the together time between her parents is only walking from the store to the bus stop as Umma goes to dance class, while Appa goes to the driving range. Despite Umma saying that she would rather they spend the time apart doing things they individually like, Janet and an action by Umma eventually convinces Appa that what Umma says is not always the truth, and that she really would like him to join her in dance class. It may take some work for Appa actually to make that step. In the process, he may find out what his wife truly wants for their date nights. Meanwhile, Jung is unaware how important Kimchee's sneaker collection is to him - Kimchee who treats his sneakers like museum pieces not be worn for their intended use - until Jung, in what was supposed to be a joke, makes a small stain on his latest limited edition basketball shoes. As such, Jung vows to ...
6Resting Place
While attending a memorial service at the cemetery, Umma learns that Appa did something twenty years ago without telling her that jeopardizes them being buried side-by-side in the perfect spot in the cemetery when they ultimately pass. Umma wants Appa to fix the problem both so that they will be side-by-side and in what she considers that perfect spot when they die. In the process of them trying to fix the problem, they may decide that their collective priorities change when they find out some of the alternatives. Meanwhile, after Janet and Gerald watch a video together that features a good looking guy, Gerald believes the moaning he hears emanating from Janet's bedroom is her pleasuring herself. He further believes that what Janet is doing is some Korean sex thing after he overhears Janet and her parents talking about how good a Korean massage feels. Gerald has to put up with the thoughts of what Janet is doing which makes him uncomfortable, or he is going to have to confront her ...
7Sneak Attack
Appa has received a new free commercial freezer for the store from one of their suppliers, meaning they have to get rid of one of their existing freezers. Without telling Appa or Janet, Umma offers the extra freezer to Jung and Kimchee for their apartment, Umma who still does everything for her son. Kimchee convinces Jung to take the freezer despite Jung not wanting to feel like a charity case beholden to Appa. Things get more complicated when Jung changes his mind without telling Kimchee, who has his own ideas of what to do with all the extra space they have to freeze things, and as Janet finds out, she, too, who would like the freezer for her apartment. Meanwhile, Umma has received the latest smuggled shipment of Korean face cream from her friend Mrs. Lee, who has just returned from a trip there. This agreement between the two friends has existed for years, something that Umma has not told Appa as Umma sells it under the table for cash to friends at a healthy profit. Things take a ...
8Silent Auction
Umma has been placed in charge of a silent auction fundraiser at the church. Among the donated items are a baseball bat signed by Jose Bautista. Appa wants Umma to use her position to put aside the bat for him. What Umma covets is a fur coat, even if it was donated by Mrs. Park. Beyond their own wants as opposed to the spirit of the event to raise as much money as possible for the church, Appa and Umma take a joint action which has unintended consequences concerning both the coat and the bat and the possibility of them getting the material item they each want. Meanwhile, possibly with the underlying and unconscious act of being jealous seeing her with Alejandro, Jung decides to call Shannon out on her two hour lunch, which Jung states affects his working life in he needing to cover for her. This accusation leads to Shannon and Jung trying to one up the other in threats of an administrative nature concerning those at head office. They may get to a point of no turning back which in turn may expose the true nature of what is going on between them. And with a found toonie in the store, Janet purchases what ends up being a $500 winning scratch and win ticket at the store. She however learns from Appa that she can't cash it due to regulations preventing employees from purchasing such tickets where they work due to past instances of fraud. So Janet tries to find someone to cash it for her, which may be easier said than done.
9New TV
Umma doesn't like what she considers Appa's out of control unilateral spending. Just as Umma was complaining to Pastor Nina about not being able to donate more to the Adas, the recently arrived immigrant family the church is sponsoring, Appa walks in in front of Pastor Nina with a new hi-def TV. Appa's spending in this situation causes more problems as Appa and Umma try to taketh away from the Adas what they had already giveth for reasons near and dear to their pocketbook. Meanwhile, Kimchee has started dating a young woman named Lauren. Kimchee wants Jung to stay clear of them until Lauren really seems to like him, as Kimchee's dates always seem to gravitate toward Jung's animal magnetism once they see him and away from Kimchee. After Lauren does end up meeting Jung in close to his birthday suit, Kimchee wants Jung instead to go any extreme in making Kimchee look good in front of Lauren by making Jung himself look bad. And Janet is critical about the work of her class' guest photographer, Santi. She believes his photographs of women perpetuate the stereotype of western beauty. So Janet is surprised when Santi asks her to model for him. In the process, Janet may too fall prey to the stereotype she so railed against.
10Janet's Boyfriend
Janet doesn't want to tell Appa and Umma that she has started dating someone, she telling herself that's it's solely casual to protect herself. The reason not to tell Umma specifically is because her boyfriend is neither Korean or Christian, and the reason not to tell Appa is because he can't keep a secret. A further reason not to tell Umma is that Umma knows and doesn't like her boyfriend's father. Her boyfriend is Raj, the Mehtas' son who Janet has known since their days in public school. But Appa and thus Umma eventually do discover both that Janet is dating and that her boyfriend is Raj. They both want to support Janet as she seems happy in dating Raj. But they have to decide what to do when they discover something about Raj that Janet probably does not know about him. Meanwhile, Jung and Kimchee decide to host a party at their apartment, something they as roommates have never done. They want it to be one of those epic parties they used to throw and often attend when they were in their teens. Jung changes his mind about the nature of the party when he realizes that Shannon will be coming, she who will be bringing wealthy Alejandro as her date. Jung doesn't want to come off as bush league in comparison to Alejandro. In the process, Jung and Kimchee have to come to an understanding about the nature of their living arrangement.
11Good Neighbours
Appa has generally had bad relations with his and Umma's business neighbors, about which those neighbors have more often than not not known. Umma doesn't want Appa to drive away their new neighbor Daniel, a fitness instructor, as Umma thinks he's a nice, friendly man. But both Appa and Umma's individual views of Daniel and his business ebbs and flows as they get a closer and more direct perspective on him, his customers and his business. Meanwhile, Jung, in trying to move on from thoughts of Shannon, decides to ask Marlow out on a date, regardless of him being her boss. But Jung's decision may take a turn when he discovers that Shannon and Alejandro's relationship may not be on solid ground anymore. He has to decide between what seems to be a sure thing with Marlow or helping break that ground on which Shannon and Alejandro are standing. And spineless Gerald has been reluctant to introduce Chelsea, his girlfriend of one month, to Janet due he considering Janet being too judgmental. The resulting interrelationship between Gerald, Janet and Chelsea gets even more complicated with what seems to be Chelsea's primary character trait specifically within this threesome.
12Appa's First Text
Janet gives her old cell phone to Appa, it which will be his first smart phone ever, replacing the cordless phone he carries around. Beyond the newfangled technology he tries to use such as the voice activated commands, he finds some unexpected information on the phone of a more personal nature. He has to decide what to do with the information. Also related to phones, Jung, on a wild partying night out with Kimchee, gives his cell phone number to a girl he really likes, he who didn't get her number in return in his drunken stupor. He's sure that she'll text him to reconnect, he unaware of what other mystery people may have his number. Meanwhile, a new unwanted mascot has invaded the store, a small dog, he/she who just doesn't want to leave as much as Umma shoos the dog away time and time again. The way that Umma ultimately is able to get rid of the dog doesn't quite meet her expectation. And Janet is looking for something to do tonight, her true top choice being to grab some dim sum with someone. In the process, she learns that Dree, a girl in her class that she admittedly thinks is a bit stuck up, is having her first show, and has invited many of their classmates to attend including Gerald. Janet does whatever she can to get an invitation in what Kimchee calls her FOMO - fear of missing out - even though there are other things she'd much rather do and other people with who she'd rather hang for the evening. Janet having the FOMOs leads to something she may regret.
13Handy Graduation
At age twenty-six, Jung has just received his GED. To celebrate, Shannon wants to throw him a party at their Handy agency, with Jung's family among the invitees. Beyond her excitement about the GED, Umma is as happy when she learns that Appa and Jung have been in contact, Appa who does plan on attending the party. Umma sees this reconciliation between Appa and Jung as being able to bring the entire family back together. Something that happens and some information that comes to light at the party, the latter having indirectly to do with Jung's GED, have the potential to change both Jung's relationships with Shannon and Appa fundamentally. Although happy for her brother, Janet is jealous of the attention Appa and Umma are giving Jung because of the GED, she who got no such attention from her parents when she not only graduated from high school when she should have, but at the top of her class, and she who gets no such attention from her parents for getting one of her photographs published (unpaid) in a local free magazine. To garner that much wanted attention from her parents, Janet, with a little indirect help from Gerald's cousin, decides to become her own version of Jung.
1New Appa-liance
When Umma wants a new dishwasher, Appa's determined to get the best deal. Janet adopts a new name as Jung tries to get his job back at Handy.
2Cutie Pie
Appa tries to convince Umma that he's still attractive.; Jung returns to Handy.; Gerald's girlfriend makes herself at home.
3Open Kimunication
Appa and Umma unwittingly end up in marriage counseling. Jung learns more about Shannon's boyfriend than he bargained for. Janet debates whether or not to share a potential mentor with Gerald.
4Thy Neighbour's Wifi
As the video continually freezes when she watches her favorite Korean show online, Umma is able to convince Appa to upgrade to a faster and thus more expensive Internet package. However, when Appa learns from Enrique that Daniel, who owns Crash-Fit, the gym next door to the store, has a fast and reliable Internet package with free WiFi for members, Appa does whatever he can, short of becoming a gym member, to get the password to Daniel's WiFi instead of paying for the upgraded Internet package himself. Meanwhile, Umma has pressured Janet into doing a Bible passage reading at this Sunday's church service, Janet who has of late done whatever she can to get out of going to church altogether. Pastor Nina asked if only to put forward a face of the younger generation, who are now sorely lacking at their church services in their entirety. Janet really not wanting to do it is strengthened when some of her friends find out not only about the reading, but that the passage chosen has what they would consider misogynistic overtones, with references to women obeying their husbands. Janet's conundrum on the issue is heightened with a series of subsequent events. And with no one else from Handy available on the spur of the moment idea, Shannon and Jung decide to go out for drinks together after work solely as "buds". In the process, they run into Katie, one of Shannon's friends in who Jung shows a sexual interest. Shannon has to decide if she will help foster the Jung/Katie romance.
5Army Spoon
Umma has always been disgusted by Appa using the dirty old spoon he used when he was in the Korean Army. She is equally as disgusted by the story he always tells about the spoon associated with hunting a wild boar at the time, hence the reason she calls it his dirty pig spoon. When Gerald sees Appa eating with the spoon and hears the story, he believes Appa and the spoon would make a great photographic subject for an upcoming exhibit. Associated with the exhibit, naive Gerald ends up unwittingly embellishing the story probably even more than the actual reality compared to Appa's story, which may place Appa in an uncomfortable position. Someone who also ends up in an uncomfortable position is Janet when Chelsea offers her her family's membership at an upscale supper club as a venue for Semira's birthday celebration as opposed to the casual bar Janet was planning. Janet ends up making a joke when speaking to their black female server, the joke which could be construed as sexist. Everything Janet does to make it up to their server just makes Janet seem more like an insensitive clod, at least in her own mind. And Jung has a free coupon for a skydive, which he ends up doing on his own as Kimchee has an ultimate Frisbee game and Shannon has a family thing at the time, Jung who tells no one in his family about it. So when Umma receives an emergency call saying that Jung has been in an accident, a frantic Umma goes rushing to his side. This situation brings up the topic of who is whose emergency contact, Umma mistakenly believing she would be everyone's first choice.
6The Kim Cup
Umma has finally convinced Appa to clean up the basement, she, in a sneak attack, calling in Jung and his muscles to help out. In the process, Appa and Jung find the "Kim Cup", a prized family trophy from when Jung and Janet were little, the cup which competitive Appa always won. Appa, in his own sneak attack, tries to maneuver Jung into unofficially competing for the Kim Cup all over again, Jung, who, as a child, always wanted his name on it. Meanwhile, Umma, after hearing that a customer has a regular girls' night in with her daughter, laments not having such with Janet. So Umma unilaterally decides to organize something for just the two of them without telling her. When Janet is confronted with the idea, she does whatever she can to get out of it. Janet may have a change of heart when Umma finds a replacement "Janet". And Shannon is thrilled when an unmarked gift basket arrives at Handy for her, she assuming from Alejandro. After consuming most of the foodstuffs contained within, she discovers the basket was intended for someone else at the agency. Not wanting to spend the $300 to replace it without the intended recipient finding out, what Shannon does has unintended consequences.
7Appanoon Delight
Appa wants to teach a lesson to Janet in respect for personal property when she hasn't yet returned his drill which she didn't even ask to borrow. Going over to Janet's apartment to get the drill, Appa finds not only the drill, but the fact that Gerald has a waterbed, and Umma who has sneaked into the apartment herself to do some cleaning. Getting into some spontaneous role play, Appa and Umma also get into a little spontaneous afternoon delight in Gerald's waterbed. Seeing the signs, Janet figures out what they have done, she who wants to teach a lesson particularly back to Appa about respect for personal property, especially when something unexpected happens during another of their afternoon delight encounters in the waterbed. Meanwhile, Kimchee has to prepare and give a presentation at a corporate meeting, Shannon who is unable either to do it or help. As he used to "slay" such presentations when he was Assistant Manager, Jung can't help but give Kimchee more than his two-cents worth of advice. Something inadvertently happens that sends Kimchee to the hospital, the incident caused by Jung, which in turn leaves Jung to do the presentation. Did Jung purposefully sabotage Kimchee because he wouldn't take his advice, are there other things at play, or was it purely a case of an accident being an accident?
8To Him It May Concern
Appa has made a serious spelling error in a "disc unt" sign for the store highlighting his deficiencies in the English language, leaving Umma to take over such duties for the store. In the process, she discovers her English isn't any better, something she doesn't want to divulge to Appa. Writing English takes on a further dimension when Appa offers to write a reference letter for a photography internship for Gerald for which he's been shortlisted, the application for the internship which Janet submitted without Gerald's knowledge. In the process, Appa and Umma's lack of proficiency in the English language may battle it out with Janet's controlling nature as being the bigger problem. Meanwhile, Kimchee's mother is visiting from out of town, Jung offering his bedroom to her while he stays with Janet and Gerald. As Kimchee de-Jungs their apartment, he hasn't told Jung that Mrs. Han hates and has always hated him, he also not mentioning to her that they are not only still friends but roommates. When Jung not only finds out but finds out the reason for Mrs. Han's feelings toward him which really has nothing to do with him per se, Jung has to decide how to deal with the issue.
9Blabber Talker
Appa surprises Umma in that he has booked a Cuban resort vacation for the two of them, Appa having found a great deal. In their excitement, they speak about it to their friends and acquaintances, Mr. and Mrs. Lee who decide they'd like to go along. However, Appa in particular makes some disparaging comments about Mr. Lee in not wanting the Lees to join them. That specific comment gets back to the Lees. Appa and Umma believe the leak/mole is Mrs. Ada, who has been doing some housework for them. Appa and Umma decide to set a trap to determine for sure if Mrs. Ada truly is the leak. Meanwhile, the gang at Handy have been doing impersonations of Shannon behind her back. Finding out about it, Shannon actually loves that she is the focus of their attention, leading to impersonations of others within the group coming out of the woodwork, some who take the impersonations of themselves better than others. It may get out of hand when Amanda Brookfield, Handy's regional manager, makes a site visit. And Janet has agreed to take Mr. Mehta up on his offer to take the engagement photos for his son, she may or may not realizing that the groom to be, Raj, is the person who broke her heart in dating her when he was already engaged to the bride to be, Divya. Can Janet and Raj in particular, as the only two of the three who knows about them dating, be adult about the situation?
10Elephant in the Room
When Umma gets rid of some of Janet's things, Janet retaliates. Appa sympathizes with both sides of the dispute, but aims to work the situation to his advantage. Kimchee is on a mission to ask out his long-time crush but has trouble navigating Jung and Shannon's conflicting dating advice.
11Appanticitis
Appa is bothered by the rather brusque way Umma always applies the lotion to her arms. After tells her so, Appa regrets his actions, as she is already feeling self-conscious about something that makes her appear less than feminine. Is there any way that Appa can make it up to her? Meanwhile, Janet has to take Gerald to the emergency room for a pain he is feeling in his side. Beyond the ultimate diagnosis of appendicitis, Janet has mixed feelings about the hospital visit when she sees who the emergency room physician is. And Jung and Kimchee have decided to submit an audition tape as a team to appear on the reality television show Astounding Trek. After making the tape, Jung comes to realization that he'd rather do the show with Shannon, another fan of the show. Jung has to figure out how to apply with Shannon without Kimchee finding out.
12Hit 'n' Fun
Appa and Umma find themselves in the midst of a moral dilemma when they accidentally damage a friend's car. Jung worries his birthday greeting to Shannon might give her the wrong idea and quickly goes into damage control. Janet and Gerald enjoy venting about everything. But now that Gerald's in a relationship, he might not be Janet's closest ally when it comes to dishing dirt.
13Lord of the Ring
Umma loses her wedding ring and is desperate to find it before Appa discovers it's gone. Tensions flare at Handy when Shannon and Kimchee win a BBQ and can't decide how to split it. Janet worries that Jung will ruin her chance with a hot yoga instructor, but there's an even bigger obstacle coming her way.
1The Trollop
Only the Mehtas and Janet and Gerald know thus far that Raj canceled his wedding, with only the latter two knowing he did so because he is still in love with Janet. When Janet runs into Raj, she can only admit to herself that she too still has feelings for him. Sensing an opportunity, Janet does whatever she can to spend time out with Raj, the problem being her burgeoning relationship with Nathan and he and the rest of the world knowing nothing about there ever having been a "Janet and Raj". Umma has already bought her dress for Raj's wedding - her fantasy dress from a high end boutique that costs more than she would normally pay for a dress - and when she learns from Janet that the wedding has been canceled, she wants to keep the dress anyway, while Appa wants her to return it and get their money back. Knowing that Umma won't do so voluntarily, Appa decides to take the dress back for her. Appa may have other things on his mind when he gets to the store. And Jung and Shannon decide to go out for lunch at what for Jung is the best burger joint in town. Upon arriving back at Handy, Jung relays a funny story about the interaction between the clerk and the line cook at the burger joint to great guffaws from his colleagues, but when Shannon cuts in to continue the story, she is stopped dead in her tracks. Why?: because Jung could get away using the thick Chinese accent to mimic that of the clerk, while she couldn't. That brings up the whole discussion, not only between Shannon and Jung, but also Kimchee and Sophie of when it is appropriate to mimic accents and for who it is appropriate to do so.
2Couch Surfing
A leak in the apartment above theirs forces Jung and Kimchee to find temporary accommodations while repairs are being done in the building. Umma takes the opportunity to offer Jung Janet's old room - Jung not having stayed since his and Appa's falling out when Jung was sixteen - while Appa is less than excited to have Jung back. Some miscommunication results in a different housing arrangement than Umma planned which affects the dynamics not only at the Kims, but at Janet and Gerald's. Meanwhile, Shannon is angry with Alejandro for breaking a weekend getaway engagement for what she considers a frivolous work issue. Shannon inadvertently takes her frustrations out on "JBT", she who tries to make amends on JBT and his creator without actually owning up to doing anything wrong.
3The Help
Umma accompanies Janet to an art showcase at OCAD where Janet's photography, on display, is in the running for the prestigious Clark Medal. It isn't until after the showcase that Umma tells Janet a story about something that happened to her at the event: a Caucasian woman, Mrs. Taylor, mistook Umma for one of the catering staff, Umma who just helped Mrs. Taylor as if she was. While Umma took no offense to it, Janet believes Mrs. Taylor's actions are racist. Janet has to decide what to do when she learns from Ms. Murray that Mrs. Taylor and her family are on the adjudication panel for the Clark Medal. Learning about the story leads to Appa taking offense to anyone who comes into the store automatically believing that he works at the store. What he does to remedy the situation has unintended consequences. Meanwhile, Jung and Omar witness from a distance an encounter between Shannon and Alejandro which they believe is the two of them breaking up. Jung has to decide if the time is right for he and Shannon to act upon the sexual tension that has long existed between the two of them.
4Happy Ummaversary
It will soon be Appa and Umma's anniversary, an event the two of them never celebrate. Regardless, Janet wants to do something that she knows Umma in particular would like to mark the occasion, something that she was originally going to make a surprise for both her parents, but which she figures she better get Appa's approval beforehand under the circumstance: to host a small dinner at her apartment for the entire family, the four of them who have not had a meal together in close to twenty years. Jung has already said he will come, and Appa also begrudgingly agrees in not wanting Jung to seem the bigger man than him. Getting Umma to the party may be a different matter, especially as Appa and Janet still want to keep it a secret from her until she arrives at the apartment. Meanwhile, Shannon wants to keep the fact of she and Jung dating a secret, especially from the Handy staff in she not wanting to be labeled as the stereotypical crazy lady boss. Shannon's reflexes taking over leads to some less than professional interactions between the Handy staff, especially interesting considering the company's new marketing customer service campaign, "Go the Extra Mile".
5Thinkin' About Inkin
As Kimchee and Gwen approach six months of dating, some of Kimchee's Handy colleagues tell him that he should think about getting her a meaningful six month anniversary gift. Uncertain of himself in such matters, Kimchee asks Jung's opinion on what he purchased as that gift. The gift and Kimchee asking Jung for his advice inadvertently spills into Jung and Shannon's five week old dating relationship. Although outwardly not calling it a date, Janet attempts to spend time with Nathan as friends in offering to help him with the mandatory business class with which he is having troubles. That time together leads to Gerald and Chelsea questioning Janet about old lovers being friends, and if the same applies to Raj. What Janet does a result of her time with Nathan may test the waters of friends or potential lovers with both Nathan and Raj. And in a moment of panic when she's with Umma, Pastor Nina blurts out some private information, something that sounds like she is having an inappropriate relationship. Umma telling Appa leads to the gossip mill circulating around the church, a rumor about Pastor Nina spinning out of control with no evidence of anything.
6Soccer Dad
Soccer fanatic Appa learns that Jung and Kimchee play in a recreational beer league. In Kimchee inviting Appa to the next game, Kimchee, and by association Jung, and Appa have different ideas of what the invitation actually meant. As an inferred compromise, Appa decides to assume the position of coach. Appa, Jung, Kimchee and the rest of the team may have differing opinions on the team's new acquisition in finding the balance between winning, having fun, and making soccer stars out of Kims. Meanwhile, Janet cannot handle watching Gerald and Chelsea buy packaged bindaedok, a Korean pancake that Umma used to always make and which Janet loves. Janet casually offering them some the next time Umma happens to make it from scratch doesn't sit well with Umma, who forces non-cook Janet to learn how to cook if she wants any of her Korean favorites. Janet's first attempt at making bindaedok, at which she admittedly struggles, has an unintended consequence on Umma. And Shannon learns that Stacie will soon be turning thirty. While Stacie doesn't do celebrations, Shannon is determined to throw Stacie a work party, they all learning for a reason beyond Shannon just liking celebrations.
7Beacon of Truth
Appa overhears Chelsea and Gerald conspiring to tell a lie to her parents, which brings up Appa and Janet's own history in such matters, Appa who states he knows whenever Janet has lied. But Appa learning that it is not the case, that Janet has lied to him and Umma without they never having known it was a lie, has far reaching consequences, for Umma with Mrs. Mehta, the former who is trying to kick the latter out of her book club among other things, and for Appa and Janet's own relationship. Meanwhile, an incident at work shows that Shannon and Jung have not totally figured out the boundaries of their work relationship and their personal relationship. Kimchee's delicious lemon squares are collateral damage in the process of they trying to work it out.
8Chammo!
Janet is commissioned by Shannon to take professional photographs of her cats. Shannon takes someone to the spa and Kimchee is in a spicy food war at work.
9Which Witch is Which
Umma has long kept among her prized personal possessions pictures that Janet drew of her when she was six. It isn't until Appa points it out to her that Umma sees that Janet depicted her as a witch. Although Janet says the pictures are of Mrs. Lee who used to babysit her, Umma eventually discovers that the pictures truly were of her. As Umma tries to demonstrate a lesson in what a hurtful thing the pictures are to Janet, it may actually result in a slightly new dynamic in their relationship. Meanwhile, Appa finds a $100 bill outside the store. Ultimately in wanting to look good to God in the surrogate of Pastor Nina, Appa hides the money in the bag of a down and out regular customer, Gus, partly in his hopes that Gus will pay off some of his debt to the store. Appa's action doesn't have quite the effect he was anticipating. And a song comes on at work that they used to have a routine to leads to Jung and Kimchee revisiting their thirteen year old boy band selves in reenacting that dance routine. This leads to Shannon wanting to put on her own private dance for Jung to get them in the mood. Jung has to decide if he will tell Shannon he finds the dance not only less than sexy but totally off-putting.
10In the Bedroom
Appa and Umma come up with a new sleeping arrangement.
11Birds of a Feather
Appa is scheduled to be the first speaker in what is planned to be a regular community speaker series at the church, Appa's talk on small business. When Pastor Nina asks Appa to switch with next month's scheduled speaker due to a conflict in that speaker's schedule, Appa reluctantly agrees, that reluctance in no longer being first. When Appa learns who that next speaker is and what that conflict was, Appa has to figure out a way to get his prime spot back, at least in the eyes of the audience. Meanwhile, a morning dove flies into Shannon's apartment window, it injuring itself. Jung, who has never been one attuned to animals, agrees to "co-parent" the dove to health with Shannon, which means the bird will be staying with him due to her cats. And Janet has decided that she will go to Korea to teach English in an effort to rediscover the Korean side of herself. In finding out she may not be the only one in her idea being "stolen" by someone else, Janet takes measures to take the idea back for herself only.
12Knife Strife
Appa and Mr. Mehta are doing their regular guy talk in the store, this time about the lax work of the police, specifically because a uniformed officer, Constable Tiggs, is in the store shopping. Appa's complaint leads to Officer Tiggs bringing in his supervisor, Captain Leaming, to address Appa's complaints directly. In the process, Appa and Umma learn of a recent yet unsolved crime, Umma believing she having some evidence related to said crime. Umma isn't sure what to do in light of that evidence which would lead to people, including Appa and Janet, learning of one of her extracurricular activities which she and they would find somewhat embarrassing. Meanwhile, Shannon is hosting this year's Greater Toronto Handy Branch Managers Annual General Meeting (GTHBMAGM), this meeting the first time Kimchee will be in attendance. As such, Kimchee does some studying to make a good impression on the other managers. He will find that he studied the wrong things to impress this cutthroat group. And after a night out with Nathan and some of his friends, Janet contemplates breaking up with him due to they having nothing in common. What Janet decides to do may take into consideration Jung, who has formed a bond for the first time with one of her boyfriends.
13Bon Voyage
An incident at the store leads to Umma announcing her post-Appa life plans in the statistical probability that she will outlive him. Uncomfortable with the notion of dying before her, Appa devises his own post-Umma list of things to do. Janet convinces them that there is a much happier compromise than each coming up with such lists, that compromise which may not be so middle ground. Meanwhile, Janet learns that she has been accepted into a four month internship working for a social service agency in Tanzania. While she tries subtly to convince someone to accompany her, she and Gerald come to some conclusions about their own relationship in light of his and Chelsea's upcoming extended working trip to Korea. Someone else who is also necessarily making a living arrangement change is Shannon as her apartment building has been sold. Due to the housing situation in Toronto, she is convinced that it may be more prudent to have a roommate, Jung contemplating the possibility of that roommate being him, especially in light of the look she gave him when she made the decision. What Jung decides to do has a ripple effect in his own current living arrangement with Kimchee.
1Parking Pass
Umma receives a diagnosis of having multiple sclerosis, it caught in its early stages meaning that the disease will not progress drastically in the immediate future if she manages it well. With it, the Kims are eligible for a disabled parking pass, which Umma doesn't want to use, at least not yet, until she tells specifically Janet about the diagnosis. Appa, on the other hand, sees the benefits of using the pass, even when Umma isn't with him. Umma telling Janet the news is more difficult than she anticipates as Janet is still settling back into life at home after her volunteer time in Tanzania. What that trip has showed Janet is that she wants to work for a non-profit, most specifically in international development. What Janet may not yet realize is that while she is shooting for the moon for her first such job, her resume may not yet match her aspirations. Meanwhile, Shannon and Jung, the latter now in business college in El Segundo, California, are doing what twenty-first century couples are doing in long distance relationships, namely having video sex. The problem is Shannon's seeming lack of computer savviness.
2Channouncements
Local morning television show personality Beverly Chan has just joined the congregation at the church. Most, including rabid fan Pastor Nina, are in awe of Beverly, who has agreed to make the church announcements at the weekly services, what Beverly likes now to coin as "Channouncements". The one person who is not enthralled is Umma, who used to make the announcements until a few months ago when Pastor Nina said they were no longer needed. Feeling like she is being pushed aside in favor of celebrity, Umma tries to regain her position and pride using whatever tools she has at her disposal. Meanwhile, Janet has kept a journal ever since her return from Tanzania, Appa who feels that the journal is taking the place of what used to be their regular conversations which he misses. After Appa "accidentally" happens to read something nice that Janet wrote about him in her journal, he does whatever he can to get Janet to say those words directly to him without letting her know that he read it. And needing to keep the exterior doors open in dealing with chemical fumes is making the garage at the Handy office like a furnace as all the hot air is blowing in from outside. Although against company policy, Shannon is allowing those working in the garage, namely Terence, Stacie and Omar, to wear shorts. Terence is adamantly opposed, he later confiding to Shannon that being teased for a birthmark above his knee when he was younger has always made him feel self conscious wearing them. Assuring Terence that they are all grown ups and that his colleagues won't tease him, Shannon does not expect what Terence does with those words of reassurance, a problem which results that is exponentially worse than his birthmark or Shannon allowing them to contravene the no-shorts policy.
3Appa & Linus
With tickets for court-side seats, Jung invites Kimchee to Los Angeles for the weekend centered on a bros outing to a Raptors/Clippers game. The one caveat Jung has is for Kimchee not to tell Shannon who would probably feel hurt that Jung didn't ask her. This caveat places Kimchee in a difficult position in needing to ask Shannon for time off from work, despite it being the first time ever he's made such a request. Meanwhile, Janet discovers that Umma hasn't told any of her friends about her MS, she telling little white lies to explain issues around it. Janet thinks that Umma should be more open about it, with a good first step being to join an MS support group. To Janet's amazement, Umma does heed her advice about the support group, but it isn't quite as Janet envisioned. And much to Gerald's horror, Appa, who mistakes it for a rag, not only uses Gerald's sentimental baby blanket to clean up a mess, but rips it in half right in front of him. Even after Appa finds out about the nature of the blanket and Umma sews it back together for Gerald, Appa, in kidding Gerald about being a man baby because of the "blankie", still doesn't understand why what he did seems to be such a big deal. Gerald may find a way to demonstrate why.
4Tennis Anyone?
Using her health issue as the right button, Umma convinces Appa to play tennis with her more often until she can no longer do so. As a surprise, Appa takes her to a well kept public court in an upscale neighborhood frequented solely by the wealthy residents of that area rather than the shabby court they usually play on in their own neighborhood. As such, they pretend to be from that neighborhood so as not to feel out of place. Things get complicated when they meet couple Eleanor and John, with Umma and Appa's lies about themselves snowballing as they try to keep up with the Joneses in seeing Eleanor and John as potential new friends with wealthy benefits. Meanwhile, Janet too makes a new friend in Maya, a conscientious colleague at the community center who helped her out of a jam of Janet's own making. In a girls' night in as Maya shows interest in seeing Janet's photos from Tanzania, Janet will discover Maya isn't quite who Janet thought she was. And Omar, in asking for some time off with his family from Saskatoon coming to town for a wedding, confides to Shannon that he hates the constant pressure they place on him every time he sees them in asking about his non-existent love life. Shannon's advice to him to lie to keep the family peace takes on dimensions that she didn't foresee.
5A Tangled Web
After doing some traveling, Nayoung is on her way back to Korea via a western Canada swing, she making a stop to stay with the Kims before catching her westbound flight. While Appa is happy to see her, he isn't as happy about her companion, her recently acquired pet tarantula, of which Appa is obviously scared without wanting to appear so. Appa has opportunity after opportunity to overcome his fear. Meanwhile, Jung has returned to Toronto, and with Kimchee now having settled comfortably with Gwen in his and Jung's old apartment, Jung has decided to move in with Shannon and Kwami. In Umma seeing this move as Jung stating that he and Shannon are serious if not on the way to the altar, Jung believes a lunch at the apartment with the three of them is in order as a certain strain exists between Umma and Shannon in both directions. While all three overthink the lunch, Jung takes it to another level. And Kimchee is deemed heartless by the Handy staff in he having seen "whatshername" (the employee whose name he can never remember) crying in the corner, and he having pretended not to see her as he was in the middle of a managers' telephone meeting with head office. He devises a scheme to overcome this new heartless moniker.
6Cookie Monster
Appa finds marijuana in the house. Shannon throws a staff party that doesn't go as planned.
7Chance Encounter
Appa and Kimchee enjoy an impromptu hangout together. Janet and Umma find an envelope of money in the store. Jung and Shannon struggle to watch TV together.
8Slippery Slope
Appa worries about Umma after a minor household accident. Janet uses Jung's past to boost her reputation with students. A high school reunion has Kimchee thinking about an old flame.
9Field of Schemes
Pastor Nina and Jimmy Young have broken up which makes the upcoming championship baseball game in which they are coaching the opposing teams more tense. Appa, the umpire, vows not to favor one side over the other in his expert umpiring skills. What happens at the game turns the feud between two into a relationship of a different kind between three. Meanwhile, Janet has a bunch of new used clothes in a clothing swap with Samira. A sweater that Umma ultimately claims may, as Gerald warned and Janet begins to believe in unusual occurrences around the house, contain the spirit of the deceased former owner who shows how she feels about Umma's treatment of the sweater. And a last minute Kimchee and Jung babysitting session for Gwen's adolescent niece Becca that was supposed to be a boys' night in devolves into an argument about their respective parenting styles and how they themselves were parented.
10Who's Pranking Who?
Appa believes something that Janet did was a move to prank him, when in reality it was just a fluke of nature. Still, Appa is determined to prank Janet back, but even better. Janet may unwittingly prank Appa back first, or did she *not* again? Meanwhile, Shannon has just undergone eye surgery. Trying to be a good boyfriend, Jung makes Shannon a Korean stew that Umma always used to make for him when he was or pretended to be sick, or so he says. In reality, Umma made the stew knowing that Jung would have have messed up her recipe. That white lie has unintended consequences. And while Shannon is off work, Kimchee, with Shannon's blessing, is taking his first solo meeting with Ruth, the Handy District Manager. Without having the information at hand, Kimchee, not wanting to look unprepared, agrees to pilot test a kiosk at their outlet, he determined to make it a success at any cost as his first managerial as opposed to assistant managerial act, that is until he learns the unexpected measure the outcome of success.
11Matchy Matchy
Umma immediately sees Vince, a tradesman who has come to the store to provide an estimate for some brickwork, as the perfect husband for Janet: he's Korean, young, good looking and Christian. While Janet can admit that he is good looking, she doesn't want Umma forcing random strangers on her. What Janet does with respect to Vince may give people in general the wrong impression. Meanwhile, Shannon, in having seen them in the store, has bought a gift of a box of persimmons for Appa and Umma in remembering a sweet story about the fruit that Jung has told about his childhood in relation to Appa, the gift which Jung is reluctant to pass along in he and Appa not doing "spontaneous gift giving" well. That initial act has a snowball effect, not always in a good way for Jung. And Shannon and Kimchee are conducting the staff performance evaluations. While they consider Stacie an almost perfect employee, Shannon has noticed that she has recently been coming in late. To give Kimchee practice, Shannon wants him to address this issue with Stacie, which is difficult for him to do in seeing the staff as his friends who he doesn't want to criticize in any way. What ends up happening may negatively affect Kimchee and Shannon's working relationship with Stacie as collateral damage.
12Hugs & Prayers
In part because of a mishap involving Gerald but largely because of Umma's health situation, Janet is able to convince Appa to join her in a basic one day first aid course at the community center. Janet purposely doesn't tell him about one key aspect of the course, it which Appa jumps on in his usual manner upon the discovery. However, it may expose Appa's bullying tendencies as opposed to what Appa believes is his general jocular and witty nature. Meanwhile, Umma begins to retreat from her role as prayer leader at the church. While she can admit that her prayers for many congregants having not resulted in the well being of those congregants is the reason, she is a little more reluctant to admit something more fundamental in believing that God is pulling away from her. And after three failed attempts in sending in audition tapes, Jung and Shannon have made it to the interview stage as contestants for the next season of the reality television competition show, "The Astounding Trek". While others at Handy believe they made the shortlist as the "drama couple" trope which they are fine with, they learn the reason is something else, which could fundamentally change the nature of their relationship forever.
13Friends and Family
Jung gives Appa and Umma a business presentation for the store. Shannon and Kimchee's office teasing leads to a meaningful discovery for Kimchee.
