Taking place in Rego Park, Queens, New York, a blue-collar married couple, Doug, a deliveryman, and Carrie, a secretary at a law firm, who both live with Carrie's oddball father, Arthur, try to make the best of what they got while trying to make their marriage somewhat normal and getting through tiny problems that they have together, even the occasional run-in with Carrie's father.

Deacon advises against this because it'll get him into serious trouble with Carrie, but Doug thinks it won't be as bad as that and decides to try and talk Carrie into going on a diet.

Ray lets Doug drive, and Robert finds out that Doug does not have a license. Robert, being a cop, tells Doug to pull over. Doug finally gets his license back. On the last day, Doug has to deliver light bulbs. He has to go up stairs to deliver them, but can not because the stairs are wet with paint. He tells Doug that when he was a child, his father made him trick or treat for hours just to get pennies. That is why Arthur hates Halloween. Doug makes it up to him by getting him a childhood sweet treat at a local pizzeria. Doug and Deacon search for hours to find this place Arthur use to go to get the treat. Doug gets it, and makes it up to Arthur.

When Doug and Carrie's neighbors ask them to a relaxing vacation, they hurry to answer yes for the offer. But before they go Arthur tells them their is a fowl odor coming from the basement. Doug takes a look and a he sees mold growing in the walls, but he decides to not tell Carrie because he knows that they wouldn't go on their vacation. But when they're there, Arthur calls and tells them that the mold got severely worse and it would cos $7,000 to fix it. So Doug tries to keep a close eye on their money spending for the rest of the trip.

This, however, turns out to be easier said than done and after embarrassing themselves in a DIY shop by asking random couples out, they resort to the Bergers, an extremely boring couple they know. On their night out with them, the Bergers meet a couple they once met via a book club. Doug and Carrie instantly love this couple but when they get back home they realize they don't even know their names, let alone their phone number. They see no other option than to go out with the Bergers again to ferret out the names and phone number of their dream go-to couple.

But Doug doesn't let her know that the only reason that he doesn't have a raise is because he hasn't been working there for ten years quite yet. The only reason he told her different, was because he wanted to sleep with Carrie when they started to first date and he knew that she wanted to be with a man who had goals and a job.

This gives Doug second thoughts on giving Arthur the boot. It's Danny and Spence's two year anniversary and Spence reminds Danny on the bet they had on Spence getting the bigger room, but Danny is willing to fight him over it.

Adam Sandler plays Matt "The Animal" Klein, who was a dysfunctional student now on the straight and narrow, and has become vice principal of their old high school! With some prompting from Doug, they plan revenge on principal Nagel that gets out of hand. Meanwhile Carrie and Arthur try to watch a movie together at home with tragic consequences.
