The FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following?

A man in a Poe mask recites "The Raven" for an audience on the street. He sees a man getting coffee at a cart across the street then calmly takes his canister of gasoline, douses the man and lights him on fire. He walks away as the man burns. Claire wakes up from a nightmare about Joe. Ryan joins Debra at HQ. They've identified fingerprints from Emma, Paul, Jacob and Jordy in the creepy house -- but there are five others. Debra is trying to sort out Joe's objective. Ryan remembers Joe was an amazing teacher. 2003Ryan attends a lecture Joe gave on developing a moral code to give writing a voice. In the present, Ryan and Debra visit Jordy, who is sanguine that he'll never be put to death because, as a guard, he'll be killed in prison. Ryan tries to get in his head by telling him Joe is disappointed in him for not killing Claire, as was the plan. Jordy blocks him out by singing "Greatest American Hero" to himself. Back in HQ, they watch video of the immolation of Stan Fellows. Ryan recognizes him as a book critic who wrote a scathing review of Joe's book. They worry Joe is directing people to go after his critics. At the country house, Paul reads up on the fact the police are calling them a cult. They watch video of Rick's flaming. 2010Up in the attic, Jacob, Paul, Emma and Rick talk about how they'd go about killing. Someone suggests fire for Rick. Emma reminds them they're supposed to find their own "voice." Back in the house, Jacob tries and fails to convince Paul to get along with Emma. At FBI HQ, Mike finds surveillance of the Poe mask man putting it on at his car. They trace it to Rick Kester and storm his house. The nice, big house seems empty when they get there. A woman charges out of the pantry with a knife. She's Rick's wife, Maggie. Federal Detention CenterMaggie talks to Ryan and Debra. She's separated from Rick and ignored his call last night. She hid from them because she was scared. Rick still has a key and can be scary. They have a file of a police report from a few years back with her with stab wounds. She asked him for a divorce. She remembers him stabbing her in the abdomen. She refused to testify. She says he changed after he lost his job and made new friends who talked a lot about death. Debra plans to put her in protective custody. Out in the hall, Debra tells Ryan she believes Maggie. She decides it's time she go talk to Joe. At the house hideout, Paul tries to apologize to Emma. She happens to be in the kitchen holding a giant knife. He offers a truce and she slices his arm. "Don't try to turn Jacob against me, it won't work," she cautions. Debra visits Joe, complimenting him on his planning. She asks why he'd torch his critics. 2009Rick visits Joe in prison, saying he likes fire. For his chapter, he wants to follow Poe's teachings on revenge and go after Joe's critics. Back in interrogation"Everyone has a story to tell, agent," Joe says.He only holds three people responsible for his professional downfall. Joe addresses Ryan through the camera but Ryan heads to their HQ to look something up. Joe holds Ryan and the dead critic responsible. He thinks the third is Phillip Barnes, the dean of literature at Winslow University, where Joe taught. WinslowPhillip Barnes returns to his office and finds Rick waiting for him. Rick asks him why he denied Joe tenure then stabs him. He slices him a few more times for good measure, then marvels over his first kill with a knife. Later, at the Winslow crime scene, Ryan blames himself for not seeing Joe's next move. 2003Ryan introduces himself to Joe after class. He's excited to help with Ryan's murder investigation. At the hideaway house, Jacob takes pictures of Emma with Joey. Paul watches. 2010At the creepy house, Emma tries to convince Paul and Jacob to pose as gay neighbors to get close to Sarah. She says it's what Joe wants and dares them to try kissing. Jacob sits down and declares a game of "gay chicken" then goes in to kiss Paul. Paul remembers and gets angry. He takes the car keys and drives off, telling Jacob he's a liar. At HQ, Ryan finds something noteworthy in Rick Kester's credit card statements. He calls Claire and reads her the items, all toys for Joey. He points out that them buying Joey toys is good news. Ryan brings the statement to Maggie, who denies knowing anything about it. Rick calls her and she puts him on speakerphone. She tells him she's with the FBI and Rick tells her to tell Ryan it was all for him. His call is routed internationally and they can't trace it. Debra tells Ryan to go get some sleep, but Mike can tell he has no intention of doing so. Ryan thinks Rick knows where Joey is. Mike offers to drive. At the house, Emma is angry that Paul left since their faces are all over the news. She's waiting to hear from Rick before she sends an email and is annoyed "no one is doing what they're supposed to do." At a convenience store, Paul smiles at a woman but creeps her out. He chats up Megan the store employee instead, asking when she gets off. Agent Riley checks out the Kester house with Maggie. Mike calls him to let him know he and Ryan are outside. Mike tells Ryan that Debra told him to watch him. Mike tries to make conversation, but Ryan gets annoyed and gets out of the car. 2003Ryan visits Joe at home, showing him crime scene photos and asking about Poe. Joe says Poe's eye allegories fit the crimes. He offers Ryan a drink. In the present, Paul makes out with Maggie the store clerk. She freaks out when he chokes her a little bit and says she needs to get home. He walks her to her side of the car and slams her against it repeatedly. Debra visits Jordy, telling him Joe wants to see him. But she'll only let him if he talks to her. Agent Riley hears a noise in the house with Maggie and pulls his gun. He goes to investigate a banging noise outside but sees nothing. He tells Mike there's someone in the backyard. Jordy tells Debra they divide the secrets so no one knows everything. He tells him who has Joey. He doesn't know if Rick knows where he is, but his wife does. Maggie and Emma planned their part. Debra calls Mike to tell him Maggie is one of them. Mike and Ryan race to the house. Inside, Agent Riley sees an incoming text for Maggie. It says "Now."He turns around and Maggie stabs him through the chin. Maggie runs out the back door to find Rick waiting. 2010Flash back to him stabbing her in the stomach and her saying it's too deep. We see they're in the house HQ and Emma says Rick sucks at games. They realize she needs a hospital. Back at the Kester house, Mike tends to Agent Riley and Ryan chases Maggie outside. She plays innocent as he draws his gun on her. He whirls around and shoots Rick as he sneaks up behind him. But Rick keeps coming. Ryan fends him off and shoots him again. When he turns back around, Maggie is gone.Inside the house, Agent Riley is dead. Emma and Jacob come downstairs to the sounds of whimpering. They find Paul with Megan tied up and gagged in the kitchen. Paul says he's tired of being the third wheel. When Emma's out of the room, Paul asks if Emma knows what a liar he is. Jacob reminds him they promised they wouldn't tell. 2011One night after a party, when they've both had a little too much drink, Paul kisses Jacob and then they both go for it. Back at the hideaway, Jacob offers to help Paul take Megan into the basement. The next morning at the Kester house, Rick and Agent Riley are taken away in body bags. Debra is mad that she let Maggie fool her. 2003Joe signs his book for Ryan. Ryan mentions how hard it is to turn off his investigation. Joe says he admires him and charms him, offering him more to drink. Ryan tells Debra that Joe fooled him. In the hospital, Jordy cries out apologies to Joe then tears at his bandages, swallowing them until he chokes. Ryan knows how seduced Joe's followers must feel. "I fell for it," he says. Ryan visits Claire. She shows him an email she got of Jacob showing Joey how to torch a bug with a magnifying class, telling him if he kills it, his life will mean a little more. Then Jacob encourages Joey to suffocate a mouse. When Joey says he's never killed anything before, Jacob says they're just getting started. Emma encourages Joey to wave to the camera and say "Hi, Ryan."

The police back off outside and Emma plans to make a call to delay the FBI until Roderick gets in touch. Paul asks Emma how Jacob is doing with everything. Ryan tries to play guess-the-sexual dynamic and figure out who's sleeping with whom. He toys with Paul, saying Emma's trying to control them both. She hides in the basement in the dark, but he finds her. At night outside the farmhouse, SWAT surrounds it. Inside, Emma goes to take a call. She tells Paul and Jacob that everything is fine, but won't tell them what's going on. She goes to check on Joey, so Ryan takes the opportunity to taunt the men for her keeping them in the dark. Mike orders them to stop, but Marsden turns on him and shoots him. She tells Emma she's with Roderick. In the basement, Charlie tells Claire he's going to take her to Joey. His alarm system goes off. The FBI busts in and gets Claire but Charlie gets away. At the farmhouse, Parker gives SWAT the OK to go after Jacob and Paul. Emma and Joey arrive at a garage so she can meet her "friend."A man named Bo with a snake tattoo on his neck greets them, in a super creepy menacing way. They've been driving all night, so Joey goes to the bathroom in the back. He hears a woman crying and sneaks in through a chained door. In a dark room, he finds a terrified woman in a cage. She begs him to help her, but he runs away scared. Federal Detention CenterOlivia shows warden Montero tape of Ryan breaking Joe Carroll's fingers. Claire relays her impression of her captor Charlie, that he seemed to have an honor code like ex-military. She tells Ryan and Debra about "Roderick," who they think is Joe's second in command. At the garage, Joey tells Emma about the girl in the cage. Bo hears and yells at him. Emma shields him then demands answers from Bo, but gets none. Warden Montero notifies Parker that he's granted Carroll's request for a transfer immediately, to Georgia. Ryan goes to Joe for answers, but gets none. Ryan asks Weston to look into Warden Montero. At the garage, as Emma asks Bo about Roderick, Joey steals the keys and goes to let the woman in the cage out. Her name is Dana. Bo tells Emma he's not part of Joe's club, then he notices Joey is missing. Joey finally finds the key to free Dana, who runs out the back. Joey stays behind, but Bo finds him and screams at him, so he runs. Bo finds Joey hiding under an SUV and yanks him out by the ankles. Emma holds a gun on Bo to make him release Joey, then she tells him to run. Bo gets the gun and is about to shoot Emma when Charlie appears, having recaptured Dana. At the detention center, they move Joe to the transport vehicle and it pulls out, with SUV escorts and helicopter overhead. Weston gives Ryan info on the warden's daughter and they confront him. His daughter Dana hasn't been seen at college for two days. Her boy friend just reported her missing to the police. Charlie tells Emma that Dana is important and will ensure they make it home safe, and that Bo won't be coming with them. Ryan reviews footage from the prison loading bay that was found on Charlie's computer. He compares it with the footage of Joe being loaded on the van and finds the same piece of litter blowing through. The warden swapped the footage and he just gave notice he's leaving for the day. Ryan calls Parker to alert her that Joe isn't on the transport. He tells her the warden was compromised. Parker orders the convoy to stop. Weston and Ryan stop the warden and he drives out of the prison. He says they're going to get his daughter killed. They open his trunk. Parker finds the transfer van is empty. So is the warden's trunk. Olivia pulls to a stop outside a rundown apartment. She opens her trunk and Joe gets out. She's holding a garment bag. The warden tells Ryan and Weston that Olivia has Joe. The FBI tracks her cell phone. Olivia drives Joe somewhere, he's now wearing a suit. Charlie tells Joey that his mom was supposed to be there, but he screwed up and the "bad guys" got her. Charlie promises Dana will be OK. Olivia pulls to a stop and Joe tells her to call Ryan and say: "Joe Carroll is killing me and it's because of you, Ryan." Olivia realizes what he's saying, but it's too late. Joe starts choking her. Ryan tells her to tell Joe that he can kill him instead, but Joe throttles her. Joe arrives at a crowded food court and spies the man he was looking for. Ryan and Weston find Olivia's car, with her dead in the driver's seat. Bystanders point the direction Joe went and they enter the food court. Joe meets David. Ryan and Weston race up the stairs after them, but the men disappear down a hallway. A security guard follows them, but a blond woman walks up to him and wordlessly slices his abdomen open. She joins Joe. She's Louise. Ryan runs up to the body and sees Joe's elevator going up. He heads for the stairwell, but David grabs Ryan's gun and slams his arm in the door repeatedly until he drops the gun. Ryan follows and catches up to him. He fights David off, but Joe shows up holding Ryan's gun. Joe's annoyed at the plot twist, saying Ryan can't die in a parking garage. "We've only just concluded the first part of our novel, Ryan," Joe says. They hear a helicopter overhead. Joe says everything's going according to plan. "There is so much more to come, Ryan. Then I'll be in touch," Joe says. Joe and Louise go upstairs for the helicopter while David stays behind to hold the gun on Ryan. Ryan points out that David isn't allowed to kill him and lunges for the gun, shooting David in the leg. He gets it and races up the stairs, but he can only shoot at the copter as it flies away. Charlie gets the OK call to leave. He goes to deal with Bo and Dana. In the parking garage, Parker recaps: the helicopter got away, warden Montero is in federal custody and they have David in custody. Ryan wants to interrogate him. Parker gives him five minutes. Ryan puts on surgical gloves, asks David about Joey and digs his hands into David's leg wound. Cut to Ryan, Parker and a team finding the cages in the back of the garage. Bo's dead with a gunshot wound to the head in one. Dana's alive in the other. She tells them they took Joey. Claire gets moved to protective custody because Joe is free. She takes it out on Ryan. Joe and Louise arrive at a giant gated mansion, where dozens of Joe's followers wait for him, including Charlie and Emma. Emma hugs Joe and encourages Joey to say hello to his serial killer dad.

Joey wakes up with a start to find his creepy dad watching over him. His serial killer dad is aware his son is terrified of him, but hopes for the chance to prove he can be a "cool and fun guy." He's still working on getting Claire to the giant creepy serial killer compound. Joe goes to address his creepy acolytes, gathered in the foyer like murderous sheep. Federal Detention Center, VARyan comes in to see a new boss, Nick Donovan, leading a reaming of the troops. He was brought in from Quantico to oversee things. "So it's official, the bureau's freaking out," Ryan says. Ryan wants to talk to David, but Donovan suggests Ryan adopt "more of a consulting presence." Debra Parker protests loudly, but Ryan ducks out amiably. Donovan plans to interview David himself. At the killer compound, Joe asks Emma about Jacob and Paul. She says there's no news. A sheriff's SUV tears up the driveway. Joe doesn't flinch. Sheriff Nelson gets out and bear hugs Joe. He's Roderick. 2004Roderick meets with Joe in prison. He killed two of the girls that Joe took the blame for. Joe knows he'll repay him someday. Back in Virginia, Donovan reports that the suspect won't talk to anyone but Ryan. Ryan sits in with Donovan to talk to David, with a thousand yard stare. "You're not going to find Joe, we find you," he says. David lays on the creepy by paraphrasing Ted Bundy and saying the killers are everywhere and more people will die tomorrow. Ryan waits for him to say something useful, but instead David leans over and bites into his hand. He starts to twitch and blood pours from his mouth. At Killer Compound, Roderick shows Joe to Charlie's tech command. Charlie apologizes for failing with the mission for Claire."Don't be so hard on yourself, Charlie. Take what you've learned, and apply it," Joe says. They set up a study for Joe, an "inspiration room." Roderick has been recruiting, so there are a dozen new people for Joe to meet. Roderick says they're excited to get started, but Joe wants to get Claire first.Roderick has an idea. "Let the FBI tell us," he says, assessing a board with photos of Ryan, Debra Parker, Mike Weston and Scott Turner. Federal DetentionMike reports that "David" had a cyanide pill sewn into his hand and he bit through the skin to take it. Donovan grabs the report on "David" for himself, so Ryan goes to Mike to look it over. He was in the army, and was investigated for lethal sport fighting in Iraq. Donovan comes in angry that his email was hacked. Mike fesses up, and gets called out of the room. Donovan sends him home. Ryan argues against it, but Donovan reasserts that he's in charge. Goodwin Inn, VirginiaMike pulls up to his hotel room and sees a group of five men talking in the parking lot. He's jumpy and skips the first elevator when a woman gets on. He takes the stairs instead and ends up with the woman walking down the hall behind him and two of the men from the lot walking down the hallway toward him. He gets in his room and comes face to face with Charlie and Louise. Ryan is disturbed when he can't reach Mike on his cell. A trace shows his phone is still at the hotel. Ryan goes to check it out. He sees Mike's car in the lot and his hotel room door open and room ransacked. At the killer compound, Joe enjoys his freedom and some bad Scotch. He and Emma are both tipsy. "I'm sure there are a lot of things that you need to catch up on," she says suggestively. She unwraps his broken fingers, but their flirting is interrupted by an acolyte named Aaron reporting that Roderick says everything is going according to plan.Emma asks about Roderick. 2003Joe shows Roderick to a basement where he has a woman tied to a table."I'd like to teach you," Joe says, taking out a knife. He narrates his approach, which includes first gauging his victim's fear.He delicately describes what he's doing as he gently stabs the woman in the side. Roderick watches. Back in the compound, Emma comes on to Joe again, but he tells her he loves his wife. Charlie, Louise, Roderick and several other followers pull up to a shipyard with Mike Weston bound and hooded. Debra Parker arrives in the hotel parking lot and they look at hotel surveillance and get a report on the suspects. Louise used to be with Blackwater. Donovan reports there are nine potential matches to the partial plate and car make. They have reports on where a few were spotted, including one in the shipyard. Ryan thinks that's the one. Debra wants to follow it, but Donovan says it's his call."So make it," she snaps. They head there. Roderick explains to Weston that they're going to question him and if he lies, they'll play a "fight sport."Weston says no one knows where Claire's protective custody is, so Roderick signals Charlie to punch him. They cheer as Weston takes him on. Roderick asks again where Claire is. He says he doesn't know. Roderick recites Weston's resume, including that he's an expert in personal security, with protective custody. Weston guesses who Roderick is and again denies knowing anything. Louise brings out metal pipes and Charlie wails on Weston a few times. Ryan and Parker reach the shipyard and start looking around. Roderick wakes Weston up and says it's not over til he stops breathing. Roderick asks again where Claire is. Weston says he doesn't know. Roderick says he believes him, but calls for the final round. Ryan sees a sentry outside a warehouse and follows him. Louise gives Charlie and Weston each a giant Bowie knife. Weston charges Charlie, but ends up knifed through the gut. Louise takes the knife and prepares to slit Mike's throat when Ryan starts shooting, hitting all the no name followers. Charlie, Louise and Roderick make it to the SUV and speed off. Later, Donovan and tons of FBI are on the scene. Mike is loaded onto an ambulance and expected to survive. Ryan heads to the hospital to wait with Mike. Roderick and Louise return to the compound and report to Joe that they lost five people. Joe is sanguine, expecting they'll find Claire. Charlie comes before Joe to apologize for letting him down again. He says he wanted to join Joe so his life would mean something. He hands Joe a knife. Louise starts laying out plastic on the floor. Charlie stands on it as Joe takes the knife. "You want to do this for me?" Joe asks."I want to be important, sir. I want my life to matter. This is my gift, my apology," Charlie says. Joe hugs Charlie and tells him he'll always matter, then he gently stabs him in the side, just like he did with the coed. Roderick, Louise and Emma watch the oddly tender murder, as Charlie collapses in Joe's arms. Joe returns to his Scotch. Ryan watches over Mike in the hospital as he sleeps. Mike kept saying "I didn't tell them anything." Debra says Mike is the only one who actually does know where Claire is, because of his prior protective custody service. At the compound, Louise tries to get Roderick to come to bed, he's in a mood. Emma brings Joe clean clothes and towels in his room. She cleans Charlie's blood off Joe and leans in to him."I love my wife," he says again."She's not here," Emma says. Downstairs, Louise asks what she can do to make Roderick feel better. He stands up and grabs her around the throat, choking her half to death. When he stops, she's angry at first, then turned on. Joe and Emma fall into bed upstairs.

Open with Hardy and Parker getting reamed by brass for the FBI's massive failings thus far. They have no idea where Carroll's cult is headquartered or how many members he may have recruited. Carroll is asking his members what inspires them, looking for ways they can help him tell the next part of his story. Donovan tells Parker operations will now be based in D.C. They want her to hold Hardy's hand and report to him. Jacob's mother comes to their family's vacation home and finds Jacob there with a very injured Paul. A nervous young woman stands up to present her chapter to Carroll. We flash back to 2007 and learn that she wrote letters to Carroll about her cheating husband. She killed both him and the woman with whom he was having the affair. She was worried about DNA sending the police to her and Carroll sets her up with Roderick. In present day she tells the group she wants her chapter to have a happy ending. Jacob's mother has seen the news reports and knows he's connected with the cult. He's adamant that he's never killed anyone. Hardy gets a call from Carroll and asks about Weston. Carroll asks if he misses Claire and asks why love is so "punishing." He asks Hardy how much "hurt" a single man can take before breaking. In Richmond the young woman from Carroll's cult sits across from a complete stranger in a diner. She asks the woman to tell Ryan Hardy that sometimes love hurts. When the woman's friend returns to the table the cult member shoots her with a spear gun. Hardy & Co. arrive at the Richmond diner. Hardy figures out the woman killed was also named Claire Matthews. Hardy tells Donovan he needs to make sure Claire has no access to media. Hardy tells Parker that Carroll much be targeting women with that name. Jacob's mother, a former nurse, takes a look at Paul. Jacob still can't Emma to return his phone calls. We flash to Emma picking out a woman for Paul to kill. She assigns Jacob to go with him since it's his first murder with them. While watching the news Carroll tells Emma he's impressed with the work of the cult member named Amanda. Emma's trying to get physically clingy with Carroll but he doesn't think they be so public. Roderick notices this. Jacob's mother tells her son Paul will die if he's not taken to a hospital. There is no other way. Donovan tells the team about Amanda. There are three Claire Matthews in the Richmond area they need to find. Posing as a police officer Amanda goes to the high-rise apartment of one of the other Claire Matthewses and throws her out the window. Donovan tells the press what's happening with Amanda and her specific targets. There is one Claire left in the area. Hardy is worried that if Claire hears what is happening she's give herself up to stop the murders. Jacob's mother says if she doesn't get Paul out of there by the time his father gets home he'll call the police. Once again she calls him a murderer and he gets indignant. He tells Paul to confirm that he's never killed anyone and we get a flashback to the murder Emma sent them on. When Jacob has trouble making the first cut Paul is very aware he's never killed anyone before. Paul tells Jacob's mother that Jacob is telling the truth. Roderick tells Emma a little about his family and how he got to be the sheriff. He points that everyone has contradictions, starting with Carroll sleeping with her. He brings up the fact she has a boyfriend and wonders whether she even cares about Jacob. He knows she hasn't returned any of Jacob's phone messages, most of which are asking why she left him. Hardy tells Donovan he thinks Carroll is trying to lure Claire out of custody. The final Claire is a college student. She is at a festival and left her cell phone at home. Roderick sent Jacob an email with a meeting place. But Paul tells Jacob to go without him. He tells Jacob that he owes him one and we see a flashback to Jacob panicking after Paul's murder. Paul promised not to tell Emma what happened. In present day Jacob takes a pillow and smothers Paul. A person finds the final Claire at the festival and tells her what's happening. He shows her a cell phone picture of Amanda. They head for the police. Amanda is there with Louise. Amanda stabs the man helping Claire and takes off after her. Hardy is in pursuit. Claire finds a police officer but Louise shoots him. Claire runs off with Amanda on her heels. Hardy arrives and tells Louise to drop her weapon. She doesn't, and he kills her. Hardy follows Amanda and Claire into a construction site of some kind. Amanda picks up a nail gun and shoots him in the arm. Eventually Amanda grabs Claire and points the nail gun at her head. Amanda asks Hardy about his relationship with Carroll's wife. This allows Hardy to distract her and take away the gun. Amanda is taken into custody and Claire survives. Roderick tells Carroll about Louise being killed and Amanda being taken into custody. He does have good news. Donovan checked in on Claire Matthews and they were able to track the call to a nearby cell tower. Carroll's wife is in Huntington County, PA. Parker tells Hardy that Amanda has been taken to D.C. Donovan thinks it's "twisted" that Hardy loves Carroll's wife. Roderick tells Emma someone is there to see him. She walks downstairs and finds Jacob standing in the doorway.

Joe goes for a healthy morning jog outside the compound, then calls Ryan to taunt him. He wakes him from a hangover to gloat. Ryan tells him to go to hell and hangs up.Joe calls back to give Ryan a pep talk and explain how he plans to win back Claire's affections. Outside the compound, Roderick and Vince arrive with Claire. Jacob greets her to show her to her room. Claire demands to see Joey, but he leaves her. Debra Parker knocks on Ryan's door to check on him. Molly brings Joe her journals. She says she still lives next door to him and they occasionally hook up. 2009Molly visits Joe in prison. She's a nurse. "And I've killed more people than you," she says - she's an Angel of Death. She works in the terminal ward. Joe asks her to follow Ryan. Back at the compound, she presents Joe with her logs of tracking Ryan. Back at Ryan's place, Debra explains that they're tracking the IP of the website portal Joe uses to recruit. She tries to tell Ryan, as a friend, to pull himself together. When she hears that Joe called, she insists they get moving. At the compound, Roderick is anxious, wanting to get started -- on whatever it is. Vince the militia man echoes the sentiment. Roderick tries to explain it's selfish of Joe to wait, but Joe shuts him up and sends him away. Debra and Ryan join up with a SWAT team -- they've found the website's hot spot, in an after hours club called Whips and Regret. Debra and Ryan go inside the empty club looking for Hayley Mercury, the name on the registration. They end up in an S & M dungeon with people in leather and cages, wearing ball gags and willingly submitting to whipping. They find a woman in the office furiously deleting files. Later, with full IT people on location they find the site is hosted internationally. They talk to Hayley, who runs an online fetish house but says she's not a part of Joe's cult. She gives them the name Vince McKinley, who she farms out the hard core stuff to. Vince set up her computer and her server. She offers to deliver Vince to them in exchange for a deal. Back at the compound, Jacob brings Claire clothes and shoes, including a fancy evening dress Joe picked for her. When she tries to run for the door, he grabs her and violently throws her to the ground. He explains: "I can't cut or bruise your face, but other than that, Joe has given me permission to physically hurt you when necessary." Downstairs, Emma tries to talk to Jacob and says he's "being weird. ""The Jacob that you loved isn't here anymore, it's just me now," he says. At the S & M club, Hayley gives Ryan and Debra a package that arrived for Vince last week -- it's explosives. She sends Vince a message to lure him out. At the compound, Vince gets permission for Roderick to leave for a delivery. Vince sees Roderick is moping and tries to cheer him up. Roderick pulls a gun on him. Vince quickly pulls his own. Vince shakes it off and leaves while Roderick tries to pull his fragile mind back together. On the way out of the room, Roderick breaks the nose of a follower just standing there. At the club, they wire Hayley to hand off the package to Vince. The code word is "red" if something goes wrong. At the compound, Claire comes down to see Joe, looking fabulous. He can see she's terrified of him. She accepts his offer of a drink. There's a table for two set for dinner in front of a roaring fire. At night outside the club, Vince rolls up to pick up his package. When he's in the club, SWAT guys check his car. In the club, Vince picks up his package from the back room and asks Hayley to hold the door open for him out front. He tries to get her to get in his car.Watching from across the street, Debra wants to move, especially after Hayley uses the code word "red" repeatedly, but Ryan argues they need to follow Vince. The FBI does nothing as Vince pulls a gun on her and forces her into the car. The FBI follows. In the car, Vince checks his mirrors to make sure he's not being followed. Debra orders the FBI cars to drop back. She's worried they're going to lose her. Vince pulls up to a ramshackle old military armory in the woods and takes out his package. He gives Hayley a flashlight and they head inside. Debra and Ryan pull up and she orders it surrounded. Vince leads Hayley down into the basement, explaining that it's a training grounds for killing."Those who need it, we have to condition them before they can be trusted," he says. Vince tries to put the moves on her and feels her wire. Vince addresses the wire, saying she's a dead woman because of Ryan. Ryan and Debra run inside and try to navigate the tunnels in the dark. They see Hayley wheeled out on a chair -- she's alive. She's angry. Vince said it would take longer for them to help a live person than a dead one, which is the only reason she's alive. Over dinner with Joe, Claire tries to make sense of everything. She calls him crazy, but he clarifies that he suffers from a "monomaniacal need to kill that will only intensify over time."He informs her that she will love him again. She takes his hand and asks again to see Joey. He tells her it's the only card he has left to play. She gets up to leave. He tries to kiss her but she stops him. She walks out. In the training center they find evidence they were running some sort of boot camp. Down in the tunnels, a lone SWAT guy finds three people in a cage.Ryan goes through a training log and finds that two weeks of sensory deprivation is part of the training. They warn the SWAT guy not to open the cage, but he doesn't hear them and as soon as the cult members are out, they pounce on him. SWAT and Debra and Ryan try to find the source of the screams in the dark tunnels. They hear gunfire. With only a flashlight to light the way, Debra doesn't see one of the women standing behind her as she investigates. She trips over the SWAT guy's body and the woman attacks her. She fends her off, but the woman has a gun. Ryan comes around the corner and shoots the woman. He sees another follower behind her and shoots her, too. At the compound, Joe gets word from Vince that the FBI found the server. He tells Roderick they found the camp. Roderick assures Joe there's nothing for him to worry about. Joe asks Roderick of he gave Vince permission to go to New York. He punches Roderick in the face and warns him that he's not allowed to make decisions anymore, "because if you ruin this for me...""Don't you mean for us?" Roderick asks. At the training center, all three cult members are dead, along with two SWAT. At the compound, Joe knocks on Claire's door and tells her he believes she'll love him again. He lets Joey in to see her. In front of his roaring fire, with a glass of booze, Joe watches Molly's surveillance footage of her taking Ryan to bed in 2011. In the present, Ryan returns home to hear someone in his kitchen -- it's Molly, making herself at home. She apologizes for letting herself in, but he's happy to see her. She hugs him. 2009Meeting with Joe in prison, Molly agrees to follow Ryan on one condition -- when the time comes to kill him, she gets to do it.

Ryan watched him die. Ryan tells Joe that the robbery was found three days later, dead of a drug overdose. "Why do you think you are surrounded by death?" Joe asks. He thinks it made Ryan want to save people. "What drives you?" Joe asks.Joe says death drives him."Me too," Ryan says."We both seek it out, it motivates you," Joe says. He says they're alike and they both live through death. Jacob brings down Debra. Ryan kicks his gun to Jacob. Joe leaves the sealed room. Jacob lets Debra go and he and Joe leave. Ryan runs after them through the basement but they get away. Later, with the FBI on the scene, they want to follow up Freedom 13. At the compound, Claire tells Joe she read his book. She doesn't think his plan is going to work. She makes fun of it and he storms out. Jacob watches news coverage of himself. He calls his father in tears, but hangs up after saying "dad." Joe finds Emma pouring herself a drink in the kitchen. He joins her and starts kissing her. They go at it in the kitchen. Outside the Fowler house, Ryan checks on Weston, who knows he went too far."You just gotta make sure you don't do something you can't live with," Ryan sys. Ryan goes into interrogation and disconnects the camera. He tells Roderick if he takes him to Joey, he'll let him go. Ryan grabs an agent and makes him turn over his hat and jacket to Roderick. He escorts him out of the station, where Roderick makes him ditch his cell phone and gun. Jacob sees Ryan drive off and follows. Emma comes to Joe and tells him everyone is freaking out about the FBI being so close. She tries to kiss him and he gives her the "friends with benefits" speech, then blames her for Joey being taken. He slaps her."What is wrong with you?" the sociopathic serial killer asks the other sociopathic serial killer. Roderick leads Ryan to a dark house. When they go inside, Mike climbs out of the trunk and calls Debra, who is in a car with Nick at the turn in the road. Joe convalesces from his Claire-inflicted stab wound and entertains himself watching video of Ryan in bed with his follower Molly from 2011. On tape, Ryan pauses to take a swig of booze and Molly tells him booze will kill him. "You can't kill me, I'm already dead," Ryan says.Joe fixates on it. Later, Joe anxiously goes over a plan with Emma. He notices she's scared of him and he apologizes. Joe's guzzling booze to cope with his pain. At the local sheriff's station, they get word that Roderick is still in surgery. Joey gave a description of the compound and the FBI and Marshals are looking for it. At the compound, Joe leads a group prayer: "In death there is life, in death there is love, in death there is everything." He tells his follower Amy to be strong and checks with another that they're all ready. They've trained for this. Timing will be important. Alex assures Joe they'll get him and Claire out of the house safely. Aaron is ready to play his part. In the hall, Jacob corners Emma and tells him Joe's plan is crazy. "How do you know that he's not using us, just so he can get out of town?" Jacob asks. He's not sure they can trust Joe, but Emma tells him to suck it up. Joe, hopped up on pills and booze and still bleeding, pays a visit to Claire upstairs and tells her he can't find a reason to let her "character" live. The FBI finds property records don't match surveillance footage, they've been doctored. They've found the compound. The FBI tears through the gate and up to the mansion front door. They bust down the door and sweep the house. It's empty, except for Aaron hanging from a noose. A husband and wife, Vicki and Phil, pack up to leave town. But Emma and Jacob stop them in the garage and in the house, Joe is there with Claire. Back at the compound, they've counted 37 different prints. Debra orders searches of cars and boats leaving town. Debra and Ryan look through the house, including Joe's study. Ryan finds a note from Joe addressed to him, telling him the final chapter has begun. There's a framed photo of Claire with blood on it. Ryan guesses Claire did something to upset Joe. They think she's still safe, giving Ryan the hero the opportunity to save her. "He's going to give me the opportunity to witness her death," Ryan says."Only if we let them," Debra says. Joe ties up Vicki, Phil and Claire in their living room. He tells them they only need their hospitality until nightfall. Joe sits down and makes chitchat with the hostages, but Claire interrupts and tells him not to terrorize them. Jacob gets anxious waiting and can't believe Alex is on board with the plan. "None of this is what I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be you and me," Jacob tells Emma. At HQ, they compile faces of people who have visited Joe in prison. Ryan goes outside and looks at the gathered crowd, looking for followers -- Amy is among them. She gives an interview on TV and quotes "The Mask of the Red Death." She ends the interview by stabbing the reporter. Ryan tackles her. Later, Ryan interrogates Amy, but she only quotes "Annabelle Lee." She asks him if he'll grieve for his love when she dies. He tells her the reporter died. She's cryptic and uncooperative. He asks her if she wants to die, and when she says yes, he throws over the table and grabs her by the throat and holds a gun to her neck. He demands to know why Claire has to die. "It's so that you can be reborn," she says. Joe prepares dinner for his hostages. Claire tells Phil and Vicki to remain calm and follow her lead. She tells Joe they can be his messenger, telling Ryan his plans for her. But Joe informs her he's already told Ryan. Emma finds Jacob sitting in the car in the garage. She apologizes for what she's done to him. He forgives her and kisses her. Inside at the creepy dinner party, Joe's wound is still bleeding. Claire offers to open the bottle of wine he's struggling with. He debates whether he can trust her, but cuts her loose. She opens the wine, but gives the corkscrew back. Joe asks Phil if he'd die for his wife, then he holds a knife to Phil's neck. He says he would then begs Joe to let his wife go. Joe taunts Claire with them as an example of what real love is. Joe tells Claire to enjoy dinner since it's her last. The doorbell rings. It's the police. Phil thinks about yelling, but Joe holds a knife to his throat. Emma answers the door, but the cops are suspicious so she shoots them without hesitation.Joe goes to check the front door. Claire, still unbound, bashes him over the head with a wine bottle then picks up a fork and jabs it in his wound, twisting it. Claire frees Phil and Vicki and they run away through the woods. Joe tells Emma to go hunt down Claire. Back at HQ, Ryan tries to figure out the meaning of "Mask of the Red Death," which is about people who feared a plague and sought refuge at a palace but died anyway. They wonder if it's mass suicide.Weston suggests that could mean the evacuation center. With night falling, Debra addresses the troops outside the community center. They plan to go inside and do a low key sweep of the 100 or so people who voluntarily turned out. Ryan, Debra and Mike go inside and look at the gathered people, trying to spot followers. Ryan recognizes one man from outside the police station earlier, it's Alex. He casually walks over to him, but doesn't get far. Alex throws his arms in the air, the lights go out and a woman bashes another over the head. Several other followers go through the crowd stabbing people. Mike kills one and Debra kills another, then another in the hallway. Meanwhile, Claire, Vicki and Phil run through the woods and hail a passing car, but Phil recognizes it as theirs. Emma and Jacob get out and chase down Claire, but Phil and Vicki get away. Back at the community center in the dark, Debra does a sweep of the halls and pauses when she sees a man. Suddenly Alex comes up behind her and grabs her. He pins her arms while the other man advances on her with a knife. Emma and Jacob bring Claire to a dock, where Joe is waiting. The FBI is totally distracted by the murder and mayhem in town. Joe drags Claire to the boat and tosses her in the cabin, locking her in. Emma and Jacob watch from the dock as Joe drives the boat away. They get back in the car. Emma wants to go meet Alex as planned, but Jacob tells her they don't have to die for Joe. Jacob plans to leave, with or without her. He tells her he loves her and she says she loves him. They kiss. Then she says she loves Joe and doesn't know how to love them both -- and she slits Jacob's throat. Back at the community center, there are five civilian casualties and nine cult members dead with others escaping. Debra Parker is missing. Alex and another man drag bound Debra into the woods and put her in a coffin in the ground. They nail it shut and cover it with dirt as she screams.
15The Final Chapter
29 Apr 2013Description ▼
Havenport, Maryland The day after the attack, the FBI finds surveillance footage of Alex stuffing Agent Debra Parker in a trunk outside the community center. Mike Weston and Ryan Hardy go outside when they see a young boy walking up in a Poe mask. Emma paid him to wear it. There's a phone number written inside. A phone rings with Debra in her underground coffin. Her hands are bound. She tells Ryan she's buried. They trace the call, but it's relayed through a dummy server. She relays what she remembers. They went over railroad tracks and drove for awhile. She counted to 700 and they made lots of turns. They turned onto a dirt road and took her out in the woods. The forest beyond the tracks is 3,000 acres. They guess she has three to five hours of air. The police find Alex's car. Claire wakes up in a darkened house with the sounds of the ocean outside. She runs out the front door and sees she's in a stone cottage by a lighthouse. Joe finds her; he ushers her back inside at gunpoint. He downs painkillers.Claire thinks the lighthouse is predictable. "It's a motif, Claire. It's a bookend to the story," he says. "You're a brilliant teacher, Joe, it never really translated to your writing," she says. She tells him to hurry up and kill her, but he's waiting to kill her in front of Ryan. She calls him predictable again and he throws her in a room. There's someone else in there. Ryan and Weston and a team of agents go to the abandoned car in the woods. Alex takes aim at them with a rifle and hits an agent. Ryan sneaks up around behind him and disarms him. He asks where Debra is and hits him when Alex plays dumb. The man in the room introduces himself as Neil Meyer. A couple of kids hired him to bring a boat here and broke his ankle. Weston and Ryan take Alex to an abandoned warehouse to torture information out of him. When he won't talk, they take turns punching and kicking him. Weston whacks him in the legs with an iron pipe and Ryan gouges one of his eyes out with his thumb. Alex gives them a location."If you're lying, I will kill you," Ryan says. At the lighthouse, Joe comes for Claire. She tries to convince him to let Neil go. Joe's counting on Ryan finding them. Ryan and Weston talk to Debra as they race to find her. They tell her that they're on the way. She asks them to call her sister and her parents and tell them she loves them. Weston urges her to hang on. Debra tells Ryan that she is not his fault, she accepted the life. Alex directs them to the grave in the woods and they dig furiously. Alex watches as they pry off the lid. Debra's inside, but she's not breathing. Ryan starts CPR, but she doesn't respond. She's dead."Aw, that's too bad. Just a little too late, bummer," Alex taunts. Ryan walks over to Alex and shoots him in the head as Weston watches in horror. Later, with forensic teams on the scene, Ryan notices a manuscript in the bottom of the coffin. It's Joe's book. Ryan flips to the end and sees the burial in the book, including Debra's death. But the manuscript also says that Alex shot Weston dead in the woods. Ryan sees that it tells him to go to a house alone. Weston argues to go with him, but Ryan is too afraid that something might happen to him since Joe is killing everyone close to him. Back at the lighthouse, Joe asks Claire when she knew he liked killing. She suspected when Ryan came to him and told her about the literary references, but she blames herself for not knowing. Claire breaks down crying, blaming herself for not seeing what he was up to and saying she killed the college girls but not stopping him. He assures her she's the victim. Joe gets Neil out of the next room and stabs him repeatedly in front of her."That's what it's actually like to kill someone. You killed no one, Claire. So don't you dare take responsibility for my actions. I earned them, I owned them, they are mine," he says. Ryan arrives at the designated house from the manuscript and finds Emma waiting for him. She tells him to ditch his gun and phone and put his hands on his head. When he doesn't, a man comes out behind him and injects something in his neck. Ryan wakes up by a roaring fire in a room with Joe and Claire. Joe asks Ryan when he fell in love with Claire. "Love at first sight, that's the acceptable answer," Joe says. Next, Joe asks Ryan when he knew he was the killer. Ryan followed Claire to see if she would lead him to Joe, then he fell in love with her. Joe takes a knife and holds it at her eye. Ryan argues that he should die instead, because it's more surprising. Ryan argues killing her is bad storytelling. "Listen to you, trying to get under my skin," Joe says. Ryan says it's not hard and throws words like second rate, no-talent and flop at him. "I'm so bored with you, you and Edgar Allen Poe. What a trumped up, piece of trumped up nothing talent he was. Loser, morphine addict, just as pathetic as you," Ryan says. Ryan lunges at Joe. He runs. Claire screams at Ryan to go kill Joe. Ryan runs outside after Joe, over to the boathouse. Joe tackles him in the dark. They struggle for the gun and it goes off, igniting barrels of gasoline. Ryan throws Joe off him and into the flames. The boat house starts to fall apart around him. Ryan runs outside as Joe is engulfed in flames. Once he's clear, the boathouse explodes in a giant fireball. Claire runs up and together they watch the structure burn, with Joe inside. The next day, the FBI is one the scene, combing the area. They found partial remains. Ryan wants confirmation it's Joe. They have seven total followers in custody. Claire takes a call from Joey. Ryan plans to take her home with him and then to the FBI briefing. Ryan checks in with Weston."You OK?" Ryan asks."No," Weston says. Back at Ryan's place with Claire, Ryan gets a call that the dental records match Joe's, as does early DNA. They kiss. Mobile, AlabamaEmma watches the news of Joe's death in tears. Back in New York, Ryan puts on music and accepts delivery brought up from FBI guarding him. He takes out a knife to open the plastic bag and goes to investigate a noise in the hall. When he comes back, the knife is gone. He turns around and Molly, his follower neighbor, stabs him in the stomach, saying he was always her chapter. Claire comes out of the shower and sees Ryan on the floor. She runs over to him and Molly comes up behind her and stabs her in the back. The End

Later, paramedics bring Ryan to the hospital where his only concern is Claire. When he wakes up, a stricken Mike comes to Ryan's room to give him the bad news -- Claire is dead. One Year LaterRyan wakes up and goes for a jog through Central Park. When he comes back to his light and airy new apartment, he sees a news broadcast about a book called "The Havenport Tragedy" about last year's murders, by Carrie Cook. Ryan goes to an AA meeting. He's five months sober. His sponsor (Keith Carradine) urges him to share next time. New York College of Criminal JusticeRyan teaches a class, asking his students to analyze a murder scene. Later that night, Ryan's niece, Max, brings her pastry chef boyfriend, Chris, to dinner. His niece is in the Intelligence Unit of the NYPD. Ryan's sponsor, Barry, and Lisa from the AA meeting, join them. In the kitchen, Max confesses she's trying to keep Ryan distracted during the anniversary week of the cult murders. Union Square StationOn a subway train, a blonde woman texts as a man in a Joe Carroll mask walks onto the car. Then two more come on. One peers into the surveillance camera and they all just stand there. People on the car get nervous and then the Joes start shouting "Ressurrection!" and attacking riders. They get several, who try to help each other, but can't escape the knife-wielding attackers. They shout: "Joe Carroll lives! Ryan Hardy can't stop us!"The blonde texter lives because the train reaches the next stop and the Joes get off. In the morning, Ryan sees the news. Five dead. He hears the reports asking if they think it's the work of the Carroll Cult. Woodbridge, VirginaMike is sitting at home in his boxers when he sees FBI Agents pull up. He's was suspended pending review, but they want him in New York to consult. An attractive young blonde woman returns home to her apartment and sees a young man in her lobby. She smiles nicely at him and thinks he's cute, and gets on the elevator. She finds him significantly less cute when she sees him standing in front of her door. Ryan arrives at his class and tells the gathered throng of reporters that he's not involved in the case. Then he gets to his classroom and sees police waiting for him. At the scene, Special Agent Gina Mendez introduces herself to Mike and Agent Phillips. The three perps used a fire exit to escape. Back at the stalker apartment, the young man lies in bed with the young woman and talks to her, saying he doesn't want to have sex. Then we see that the woman he's talking to is dead, with strangulation marks around her neck. He keeps talking to Heather as he goes to the kitchen to make food. At the hospital, Ryan and Mike see each other for the first time in eight months. Flash back to the last time was at a bar, when Ryan was hammered. Mike says Joey is in witness protection with his grandmother. But Mike is worried about his testimony in front of a grand jury. He tells Ryan what to say about the shooting in the woods, when Ryan shot an unarmed Carroll acolyte out of anger. Mike will say the man's cuffs were off and he lunged at Ryan, all Ryan has to say is he doesn't remember. Ryan doesn't seem inclined to take the lifeline Mike is offering him. Mike asks him if he remembers Debra's last words, clearly disappointed in Ryan. Back in the present, they say a cordial hello. Mendez asks Ryan if he knows anything that can help them, he says no. The surviving victim is Lily Gray, an art dealer. Phillips, Mendez, Mike and Ryan go talk to her. She tells them what the killers said. Back in Heather's apartment, her killer makes himself at home, listening to her music and going through her things. Then he dances with her corpse and later does her hair and make-up. He showers, then prepares to get Heather ready for something. But first he goes back to the bathroom where his accomplice is finishing up a shower -- his identical twin. Burlington County, New JerseyA totally punked out Emma sees the report about the subway attack and is angry. Her friend tells her that Frank thinks Carlos might be responsible. At the FBI building in NYC, Mendez explains that only 40% of subways have cameras and they're only in every other car, so the killers wanted to be filmed. The masks are hand painted molded silicone, very high end. Mike pulls up info on the eight members of the Havenport cult they're keeping tabs on. One of them matches one of the killers physically: Carlos Perez. The FBI tires to figure out if they're dealing with a new cult, they turn to Ryan for help. He "aw shucks" his way out of the meeting and says he hasn't kept up with the case. He leaves. Mike follows, incredulous that Ryan is leaving. But Ryan says he's done. Ryan goes home, to a keypad protected room in his apartment, and we see that he was lying. The room is chockfull of his investigation into Carroll and his cult, and a small arsenal. He pulls out his file on Carlos. Later, Ryan's niece Max comes by, ready to work. She's been helping him, and tracked Carlos to New York. The FBI brought her Intelligence Unit into the case, but she didn't volunteer, remembering she's part of the Ryan Hardy Secret Task Force. She logs onto her NYPD system and, using a combination of Carlos' old aliases, finds his signature on a short term lease in the city. Max urges Ryan to go to the FBI, but he just asks her to lock up when she leaves. Ryan goes to Carlos' apartment and picks the lock. He jumps on Carlos when he comes home and accidentally knocks him out. He wakes him up and asks here Joe is. Carlos insists he's dead, but Ryan doesn't believe it for a second. With Ryan straddling him on the floor, Carlos starts talking as he reaches behind Ryan under the couch. He says he hasn't see Joe since he picked him up from the beach after the boat house explosion. He drove him as far as a road block, but hasn't seen him since. Ryan stops him from getting the gun under the couch, but as he's doing so, he's distracted and Carlos grabs something with his other hand and clocks Ryan. Carlos leaps up and races out of his apartment, down the stairs and out the door. Ryan chases him down the dark city street but loses him when a cab nails Ryan as he's racing across the street. Ryan staggers to his feet and gets up. Carlos goes to a midtown apartment where a French woman is putting numbers on burner cell phones. Ryan goes back to Carlos' apartment and looks through his things. He finds the Joe Carroll mask. He also finds a playbill with a picture of Heather Clarke circled. Ryan calls Max for info on Heather and learns that she was found dead 45 minutes ago. As Ryan leaves Carlos' apartment, Emma comes out from the shadows and goes upstairs. Heather's body was left sitting perfectly upright, tied to a park bench, reading Joe's book, dressed like the character based on Claire. Mike asks Ryan for his insight, but Ryan insists he has none. Mike asks why Ryan requested the full DNA report on Joe -- his DNA matched Joey's. Mike insists Joe is dead and Ryan agrees. Mike asks why Ryan didn't return his calls, and bares his soul over wishing things had gone differently with Debra, that they had found her in time. But Ryan just tells him to take care of himself, and leaves. In the hotel room, Carlos sees his mug shot all over the TV. The French woman answers the knock on the door -- it's the twins, Luke and Mark. The French woman thinks Carlos is dead. Luke blames Carlos for getting caught when he said his apartment was untraceable. Mark tells his brother to let it go. Luke goes from angry to laughing in an instant and says it's fine. He wants to hug Carlos, in the creepiest way possible. Carlos is good without the hug. Luke chops Carlos in the windpipe as the French woman laughs and Mark looks on disapprovingly. Carlos flops on the bed, gasping for air, but will live. Ryan goes to the hospital to visit Lily, the subway survivor, to apologize. Emma returns to her house and tells her friend Hannah that she didn't find Carlos, but she did find Ryan, and she has no idea what's going on. Back with the creep twins, Luke is making Carlos stand in time-out in the corner, while Mark reads a book about the Havenport tragedy. Back in his secret Joe Carroll war room, Ryan looks at a picture of Claire. At a house in the woods, a man pays a woman named Judy for sex. As he walks out her living room, a young teenage black girl does homework on the couch. She calls for a man named Daryl when she sees the news reports on the subway killings. Daryl, in a lumberjack coat and trucker hat, comes into the house to see Ryan on the TV. It's Joe Carroll, with a thick beard. At his house, Ryan tries on the Joe Carroll mask, looks in the mirror, and doesn't like what he sees.

Judy sends her daughter Mandy off to school. She says good-bye to her "Uncle Darryl," as she leaves. Judy knows he's Joe Carroll, but is more concerned that he's doing Mandy's homework than the fact he's a serial killer. Joe was up all last night watching the news reports about the subway murders. He assures her the cult is behind him and he's happy there with Judy. At home, Ryan tends to his wounded shoulder and looks up Lily Gray, the art dealer who survived the subway attacks. At FBI HQ, Mike, Agent Phillips and Agent Mendez try to understand the woman posed on the park bench. They know from neighbors that the killers spent the day with her. In a hotel room, Carlos Perez sees his face on the TV. Gisele suggests to Mark and Luke (in French) that they should just kill Carlos now. They're all waiting to hear from Joe. The twins head out for some sightseeing. Gisele cannot wait to kill Carlos. Two city cops watch Ryan go into Lily's art gallery. He tells her wants to talk about Joe. Mark delivers a giant bouquet of flowers to the Fisher residence and walks in when a woman answers. The twins knock out the parents and one goes upstairs wearing a Joe mask to deal with their young son. Ryan tries to figure out how Lily might know Joe. She doesn't think she does. She looked up Ryan and knows he's not with the FBI any more, but she understands how it must be hard for him. In the woods, Judy finishes up in the sack with her client, the local reverend. When he's finished the reverend sits down outside with her "brother" Darryl, wearing his thick beard, dark shades and camo hat. The reverend thinks Darryl's a vet of the war in Afghanistan and extends a hand to pray for him. Mandy comes home from school and gets leered at by the reverend as he leaves. In Burlington County, New Jersey, Emma is a mood about not knowing what Carlos is up to. She's desperate to find other cult members. She looks up something in the Baltimore Gazette online. At their latest scene, Luke and Mark prepare a fancy meal for the dead Fishers, whom they have strapped to chairs. Luke carries on a conversation with them like they're his parents, suggesting Mark tell them about the girl they met -- Heather, their last victim. Ryan comes home to his apartment to find his niece Max waiting for him. She found the Joe mask he has. She tries again to get him to go to the FBI, but he worries that he has no evidence about his theory that Joe is alive. Back in the woods, Judy heads out for a "date," leaving Joe with Mandy. He drops the Darryl act the second Judy leaves and Mandy turns over her tablet. Joe goes to a lost and found forum to find a message. Mandy asks what it's like to kill someone, but Joe says her mom would kill him if he answered. She tells him her mom thinks she can fix him, which is why she wrote him all those letters in prison. She asks him if he's planning to leave, because it's better when he's there. He gives her a fatherly hug. Back with the Fishers, the creep twins set the Fishers up in front of a roaring fire, with a drink and cigar for the dad. Luke tells Mr. Fisher he loves him, then checks to see if Mark is ready. Ryan's phone rings. It's Luke, calling to introduce himself. He tells Ryan they'll be meeting very soon. Luke asks Ryan what he thought of their work so far. Ryan asks what Joe thought of it, which seems to surprise Luke. He hangs up, but Max is still able to trace the call to an apartment building. Ryan won't let her call the police until he checks it out. Ryan goes to a boarded up brownstone and goes in with his gun drawn. He calls Max, who says the cell signal is still there. Ryan goes up to the roof where he finds an empty pizza box and spying equipment. A phone at his feet rings. He looks across the street and sees a twin in a Joe mask. Ryan tells Max where to send the police and goes to investigate. He finds the dead Fishers in front of the fire but hears a noise coming from upstairs. He finds their young son barricaded in the closet, unhurt. At the cabin, Joe and Mandy watch a TV documentary about his murders. "Did you play too many video games growing up?" she asks him, not afraid. The reverend drops by, looking for Judy. He makes himself at home to wait for her. At the Fishers', the FBI is finally on the scene and Agent Phillips is angry at Ryan for insinuating himself in the case. Mike tries to talk it over with Ryan, but he leaves. Once he's outside, Ryan gets a call from Luke. He psycho analyzes him, thinking he's trying to lure Joe out to serve as a father figure.Luke taunts Ryan about the fact everyone near him dies, and mentions Lily Gray. Luke is watching over her at an event. At the cabin, the reverend watches as Carrie Cooke, author of "The Havenport Tragedy" psychoanalyzes Joe. Joe sees his own face staring back at them and turns the TV off. The reverend makes a quick excuse and leaves. Joe follows him out as Mandy tells Joe not to hurt him. Joe drags the reverend out of his car and punches him, but he gets in a good hit on Joe. Just then, Mandy comes up behind the reverend and whacks him with a shovel. Back in the cabin, Joe has the reverend tied to a chair and thinks he presents a quandary. Mandy is still asking Joe not to kill him. Joe talks about failing as a writer, husband and father and just stewing on those things over the past year. Joe continues debating the reverend's fate. Ryan rushes into the charity gala where Lily is speaking. Luke and Mark are both in the crowd. Ryan talks on the phone to Mark as he keeps one eye on Lily and scans the crowd with the other. From across the room, he locks eyes with Mark, who smiles and says over the phone it's nice to meet him. When Ryan looks back to Lily he doesn't see her. He approaches an undercover FBI agent and tells him to secure Lily. Meanwhile, a man escorts Lily down to her car as one of the twins follows. When Lily and her escort are alone in a corridor, they turn and see a twin behind him in a Joe Carroll mask. Lily freaks out and they run, but are cut off by the other Joe-mask wearing twin. Lily's escort tries to protect her and takes on a twin, only to get stabs for his troubles. Lily doubles back and runs into Ryan, who hands her off the FBI agents behind him and chases the twins. He finds the wounded man, but before he can tend to him, one of the twins attacks. Ryan gets the better of him and pulls his mask off, then Luke steps out and kicks Ryan off his brother. Mark is shaken and turns to run, but Luke, the more brash of the twins, stops for a moment to gloat to Ryan. By the time Luke runs, Ryan has grabbed a nearby gun and fires after him, grazing Luke as he runs. Later, the FBI is on the scene. Lily's escort, David, is in the hospital and is expected to survive. The twins got away clean. Mike sees Ryan talking to an agent and interrupts to chew him out for not involving the FBI. When Ryan finally tries to be helpful, Mike shuts him down, telling him to talk to Mendez. Ryan sits down with Lily and apologizes for taking risks with her life. She only thinks he helped save David. At the cabin, Joe digs through the kitchen and comes out with two knives. The reverend tries to appeal to his humanity. Joe laments thinking he could start over. "The reality is that I am inevitable," Joe says as he drives a knife into the reverend's chest. Mandy watches, terrified, as the reverend screams and seems to take forever to die. Joe looks at the decoded phone number he got from the online lost ad. In the hotel room, the burner phone marked "Joe" rings. Carlos answers, but it's not Joe -- it's Emma, she knew to check the ad, too. Carlos asks if she's with Joe. "Carlos, Joe's dead," Emma says. Gisele takes the phone from Carlos and hangs up. At the cabin, Joe relishes his kill, then he sits down next to Mandy, who is quaking on the couch, and wraps his arms around her as they both stare at the dead reverend's body."Mama's gonna be home soon, she's gonna be mad," Mandy says.

At the cabin, Mandy is worried about what her mother will say when she sees the dead reverend. She helpfully suggests rolling him up in the carpet and dragging him to the barn, but before they can even get started, Judy comes home. Ryan thinks he hears a noise in his apartment and gets up with his gun to investigate. He sees Joe standing in his living room and shoots at him repeatedly. But nothing happens."You can't kill me Ryan. If I die, you die," Joe says as he stabs Ryan. Ryan wakes up. He gets up and opens his bedroom door and sees someone in a Joe mask facing him. This time Ryan wakes up in the FBI building where he's waiting to join the debriefing of the museum attack. They give him his cell phone back. When he joins them, Agent Martinez warns Ryan not to identify too closely with the victim, Lily, pointing out he nearly got her killed. They were able to track Carlos from the subway attack to his apartment and found footage of Ryan following him and getting hit by the cab. Ryan has to tell them he has the Joe mask. Martinez lists all the things they could charge him with, but lets him go. Mike throws judgey eye lasers at him. They put a tracker in Ryan's cell phone and also decide to monitor his Internet activity. In their hotel room, Gisele tends to Luke's bullet graze. "An official Ryan Hardy gun shot wound, hell ya," he says. Suddenly, the twins see their faces on the news, but Mark is unconcerned, saying it was inevitable. Emma calls again. Mark wants to have a little fun with her. In New Jersey, Emma tries to think of a reason why Joe wouldn't have contacted her if he was really alive. Mark has Carlos call Emma and ask to meet. Luke is concerned, but Mark assures it won't hurt anything. Ryan goes to see Lily Gray and apologizes again for putting her at risk. She is getting used to him checking up on her and likes it. Out in the woods, Judy is miffed Joe killed the reverend, thinking it means she didn't "fix" Joe. He tells her he realized "once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic" and life isn't worth living if you don't have a "scotch" now and then. He plans to leave at nightfall, and suggests they'll keep quiet if they're smart. He would hate for anything to happen to them. Ryan comes home to see his apartment door ajar and his security system smashed. He finds Mike in his secret Joe Carroll war room. Ryan insists he has no proof that Joe is still alive. He discovered that Joe has a half-brother named William Halston, who went missing 14 months ago, and the DNA archive was broken into around the same time. Ryan thinks the brother's body is what they found at the lighthouse and it matched the switched DNA. A half-brother would have also matched closely to Joe's son. He knows it sounds crazy. "You have earned your crazy, Ryan," Mike says, but he still thinks Joe is dead. Mike gets a call about Emma and leaves. Emma arrives at the abandoned building where Carlos sent her. Mark stalks her and sneaks up on her, but she pulls a knife on him. He introduces himself and is delighted to meet her. At FBI HQ, they have footage of Emma on the street and have tracked her back to her New Jersey place. Martinez calls in SWAT. In the woods, Mandy asks Joe not to go. She's never had a father figure before. Judy goes to talk to Joe. When he turns his back on her, she pulls a gun and fires. It's empty. He took the bullets out. Joe walks over to her and starts choking her."Sadly, Judy, I am no longer in need of your utopian slut palace, but I thank you for your hospitality all the same," he says. Mandy runs out in tears and begs him to stop. He lets Judy go. In the abandoned building, Mark tells Emma that Carlos says Joe is alive and that Roderick had plans to switch Joe's DNA to fake his death. Mark admits they're trying to lure Joe out of hiding. "The man's a narcissist. It's not a judgment, it's a fact. I don't think he can resist," Mark says. Emma is living with six other cult members. Mark invites her to come meet his group. She asks if she should be afraid. "Do you feel fear? I struggle with that. I can identify it in others, but I have a hard time experiencing it myself," he says. She agrees to go. Back at the New Jersey house, SWAT surrounds the building. They break down the door and shoot the first person who greets them with a gun. Martinez shoots another in the back as he runs and she sees a giant bomb in the corner.Down in the basement, Mike wounds another. Outside the building, Martinez is angry to see Ryan waiting. She orders him to stay away from the case and Lily Gray. Ryan goes to see Lily Gray, who brushes off the FBI agent guarding her when she says she has orders not to let Ryan see her. Lily invites him up. He tells her he came to say good-bye, for her own safety. Instead, she talks to him about fate and the idea that our choices and mistakes define us. She never takes the subway, but was running late that day. She invites him to stay for dinner. At the psycho hotel, Luke, Gisele and Carlos see the news about the New Jersey raid. Mark brings Emma. Luke isn't happy he brought her. They show Emma the news. Back in the woods, Joe tapes up Judy to stage the scene like the reverend killed her. Joe goes to look for his knife in the kitchen. Judy points out to Mandy that it's on the couch. When Joe comes back in the room, Judy urges her daughter to kill Joe. Mandy holds the knife loosely and tries to talk herself into it as Joe waits, mostly annoyed. Then Mandy turns and drives the knife into her mother's stomach, again and again. She apologizes, but tells her mother she can't let Joe go and she's dead either way because living here is death. In the motel room, they ask Emma why they should trust her. She makes the case she was Joe's No. 2 and Carlos was just his errand boy. Luke is convinced, and points out no one likes Carlos anyway. He stabs Carlos in the neck. Gisele is furious, saying Carlos was hers to kill. She runs off pouting as Carlos gurgles. Luke points out he's not dead yet and she could still finish him off. Emma isn't sure about her new friends. Ryan drops by Lily's art gallery to see Mike. He wants to see the photos from the subway attack, from the moment Lily got on the train. Ryan sees an express train go by Lily and he wonders why she didn't get on it. He watches her giving a tour around the gallery and sizes her up. Lily notices him watching and judging. She excuses herself to go downstairs. Ryan tells Mike that Lily is in on it and he radios to the agent following her downstairs. But it's too late, Lily rips off her arm sling and stabs the agent in the head. She grabs a bag and opens a secret door in the gallery basement. As Mike and Ryan try to figure out where she went, on the other side, Lily does a quick change into all black and sneaks around the basement space. Lily comes up the stairs in a blazer and red wig and runs into another agent, whom she promptly tazes. She keeps walking calmly as a crowd gathers to help the man and Ryan sees her turn and look back. He chases after her and she removes the wig, ditches it in a garbage can, and changes out of the black coat she just put on. She buys a scarf from a street vendor and keeps wakling. Ryan sees the red wig in the trash and follows. Lily steals a woman's phone and calls someone, saying "they know" and telling them to meet her at a church. Ryan follows her but finally loses her on the city streets. His phone rings. It's Lily, asking how he knew. "You said you were in a hurry, but you passed up the Express," he says."I feel like an amateur. And we were just about to have our first date. My loss," she says. She taunts him, asking if she's the first woman he's opened up to since Claire. "You were meant to be my gift to Joe, now I'll just have to show up empty handed," she says. She hangs up and keeps walking, but he catches sight of her again and runs after her down the street as Mike pulls up. But Ryan has lost her again. Lily gets in a waiting car and tells Luke to drive. "Yes, Mother," he says. Back in the woods, Joe and Mandy prepare to torch the house. Mandy suggests they leave the reverend's car two towns over. She thanks him for taking her and worries about disappointing him."I worry about disappointing you," he says. "I believe in you, Joe," she says. In the motel, they get a call and pack up in a hurry. Back at the art gallery, Ryan assures an angry Martinez that he had no idea Lily was in on it until now. They both ran background checks on her and she appeared to be who she said she was. Out in the woods, Mandy and Joe say a prayer for Judy and the reverend. Mandy asks that God bless Joe for saving her and he asks that God bless Mandy for having faith in him. Joe torches the house and trailer. Back home in his research HQ, Ryan is angry at himself. Lily rides into the night with Luke. Joe and Mandy watch the flames then get in the car and drive off. Ryan looks at a picture of Claire and feels her loss all over again.
