1Pilot: Part 1

Following a horrific plane crash, 48 survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, California, USA find themselves on an uncharted tropical island in the South Pacific Ocean which is full of secrets, as they come to learn. The first day on the island is full of monsters, countdowns, screams, stories of the past and an unfolding love story between the quick-thinking Jack Shepherd, a doctor, and the level-headed Kate Austen, a mysterious young woman. Jack, Kate and Charlie, a British former rock music player and heroin junkie, venture into the jungle to locate the pilot cockpit to find the transponder and come up against a mysterious and unseen island "beast." Other survivors with mysterious pasts are introduced who are the mysterious Sayid, an Iraqi with personal demons; the bumblingly awkward Hurley; the determined John Locke; Sawyer is an unpleasant and unfriendly self-serving swindler and sociopath whom tests everyone's patience; Claire Littleton is a very pregnant Australian teenager; Jin and Sun Kwon are a bickering non-English speaking Korean couple; Michael Dawson is a friendly guy whom is overprotective of his estranged 10-year-old son Walt; and Shannon is a egoistical, spoiled rich girl whom quarrels with her estranged older half-brother Boone.

2Pilot: Part 2

Jack, Kate and Charlie return to the group, but the transceiver is broken. Sayid Jarrah fixes the apparatus and organizes an expedition with Kate, Charlie, Shannon Rutherford and her brother Boone Carlyle and the dangerous James "Sawyer" Ford to hike and climb a mountain to transmit a SOS. The group receives a sixteen years old distress call from a French woman in the island instead and kills a polar bear. They return to the survivor's base and decide to hide the information to preserve the hope of the group.

3Tabula Rasa

The U.S. marshal's assignment is revealed. Later, there is a difference of opinion between Jack and Sawyer as to how to help the critically injured marshal. Flashback to what Kate was doing in Australia. Scenes of the crash from Kate's POV. A small group sets off with a transceiver in an effort to send a mayday signal. Michael forbids Walt to speak to Locke. Locke later extends an act of kindness toward Michael that may help the father-son relationship. Sayid makes a bid to organize some island committees.

4Walkabout

Flashback to Locke's life before Flight 815: his job, time in Australia, the crash...and a major secret is revealed. The camp is invaded and Sawyer's scavenging falls under scrutiny. Food runs out and Locke comes up with a solution. Jack organizes the handling of the dead and a memorial service is arranged. Rose has everyone concerned. When Boone and Shannon end up at odds, Shannon enlists Charlie's help just to spite Boone. Shannon strikes up a friendship with Walt. Michael and Kate escape something in the jungle.

5White Rabbit

Dr. Jack Shephard is not able to save a survivor drowning in the sea and he becomes affected by the incident and the pressure of the community pointing him as a leader. Jack has visions of his father in the island and tries to chase him. Jack's background story is revealed showing the relationship he had with his difficult and unscrupulous surgeon father, and the reason why Jack ventured to Australia. Meanwhile, the finishing water supply is stolen, and everyone suspects the nasty and selfish Sawyer. But Jack resolves his inner problems with his past and finds a source of water for the survivors.

6House of the Rising Sun

Jin jumps Michael and tries to beat him to death for no apparent reason, which gets him handcuffed to the wreckage until "why" can be figured out. While gathering water, Jack starts to talk about moving the survivors to the near-by cave for safety and practicality, but is met with resistance and reluctance. The survivors are torn between having a better, safer place to camp, or staying on the beach to watch for a possible rescue. Flashbacks by Sun, reveal pieces of her life with her husband, Jin, before the plane crash, and she reveals a secret to Michael that even her own husband is unaware of - she speaks English. Locke confronts Charlie about his drug use.

9Solitary

Ashamed with his behavior torturing Sawyer, Sayid Jarrah decides to leave the group of survivors and travel alone through the island, trying to find the source of transmission and map the place. He is arrested and tortured by the French survivor Danielle Rousseau (Mira Furlan) and recalls his beloved Nadia (Andrea Gabriel) back to his days years earlier in Iraq as part of the interrogation/torturer for the Republican Guard. Meanwhile, Hurley decides to get the survivors spirits up by getting up a golf course in a sunny field.

10Raised by Another

Claire begins to have reoccurring nightmares which one night result in her turning up with bloody hands, which leads Charlie to find out what is really going on. However, Jack isn't sure that anything really happened. Meanwhile, Hurley finds the flight manifest and discovers something shocking about a certain passenger.

11All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues

Claire Littleton and Charlie Pace are abducted by the mysterious Ethan Rom, and Dr. Jack Shephard, Kate Austen, John Locke and Boone Carlyle go after them. When the leads divide, the group split in two. Jack follows with Kate and recalls his sad past with his father. He struggles against Ethan who reveals himself not an ordinary man revealing to have super speed, agility, and near-superhuman strength. Kate and Jack later they find a near-death Charlie hanged in a tree. Things take another mysterious turn when Locke and Boone find a mysterious hatch in the jungle. Meanwhile, the nasty Sawyer confronts Sayid about torturing him, and is skeptic to Sayid's claim about other people hiding on the island.

12Whatever the Case May Be

Jack, Kate and Sawyer fight over possession of a newly discovered locked metal briefcase which might contain insights into Kate's mysterious past. More of fugitive Kate's background story is revealed, showing her participating in a bank robbery in New Mexico just to uncover something hidden in one of the safety deposit boxes. Meanwhile, Sayid asks a reluctant Shannon to translate notes he took from the French woman. A rising tide threatens to engulf the fuselage and the entire beach encampment, and Rose and a grieving Charlie tentatively bond over Claire's baffling disappearance.

13Hearts and Minds

Boone Carlyle is jealous of Sayid Jarrah, because he becomes close to his half-sister Shannon Rutherford. Boone tells John Locke that he wants to reveal the secret about the hatch in the woods to Shannon. Locke hits Boone, heals his head with a medicine and fastens him with a rope in a tree, living him alone in the forest. Boone's background story reveals his complicated relationship with the irresponsible Shannon, and about why he ventured to Australia to rescue her from a bad relationship, while in the present he tries to save her from the unseen forest creature. Meanwhile, Kate questions Sun's behavior and learns that she can speak English, while Hurley faces the language barrier to repay Jin for teaching him how to fish.

14Special

John Locke is teaching Walt Lloyd to throw knives, and Michael Dawson feels jealous with the situation. He forbids Walt to meet Locke, and recalls his romance with Walt's mother Susan Lloyd (Tamara Taylor), a overachieving executive who took the infant Walt away, and Michael having an awkward reunion 10 years later with the uncertain and spoiled Walt in Australia. Walt becomes upset with the situation and decides to hike with his dog Vincent into the woods. At the end, Locke and Boone Carlyle find Claire Littleton wandering in the forest.

15Homecoming

After the missing Claire returns with no recollection of what has happened since before the doomed flight of Oceanic 815, Jack and Locke formulate a plan of defense against her kidnapper, the mysterious Ethan Rom, who threatens to kill off the other survivors unless Claire is returned to him. Meanwhile, the disappointment Charlie feels when Claire does not remember him triggers recollections of Lucy, a woman he had let down in the past back in England where Charlie ruined their engagement so he could steal money from her to fuel his escalating heroin addition.

16Outlaws

James "Sawyer" Ford wakes up from a nightmare with a boar inside his tent. He finds his canvas in the woods, but is attacked by the animal. He decides to chase the boar with Kate Austen following its track in the forest. Along their hunting, Sawyer recalls his dark past since he was a child until his final revenge against the con man that destroyed his family.

18Numbers

When Hurley becomes obsessed with the mysterious French woman, he heads into the jungle to find her. Jack, Sayid and Charlie have no choice but to follow. Hurley's background story is revealed how he won a multi-million dollar lottery, which brought nothing but back luck to everyone around him, leading to why he ventured to Australia to search for the source of a series of numbers which led him to win the lottery. Meanwhile, Locke asks Claire to help build a mysterious item.

19Deus Ex Machina

Locke and Boone build a trebuchet in an attempt to open the hatch, but Locke is injured when the trebuchet fails. Literally following a hallucination, Locke and Boone discover a small plane crashed high in a tree. Sawyer, suffering from severe headaches, is forced to turn to Jack for help.

20Do No Harm

Claire goes into labor while a helpless Charlie goes into panic mode, leading to Kate and Jin to assist with the delivery. Meanwhile, Locke goes missing after he returns with a critically wounded Boone after his fall from the Cessna plane. Jack tends to the wounded Boone as more of Jack's background story reveals his troubled engagement with his fianc?e Sarah. Also, Sayid presents Shannon with a romantic surprise getaway down the beach.

21The Greater Good

After the death of Boone, tempers flare as the castaways' suspicions of each other grow, while an unlikely survivor (Shannon) vows revenge against Locke, unfairly blaming him for Boone's death leading her to steal the keys to the late marshal's briefcase containing the guns. Meanwhile, Claire and Charlie struggle to calm her newborn baby boy. Sayid meets with Locke in the jungle and learns of the existence of the mysterious hatch, leading to more of Sayid's background story about why he came to Australia and was blackmailed by the CIA to nab an old friend whom was a terrorist suspect.

22Born to Run

Jack suspects foul play when Michael becomes violently ill while building the raft and the suspects include both Kate and Sawyer. Meanwhile, more of Kate's background story is revealed involving her continuing fugitive status and her old school friend and the events leading up to his death. The mysterious hatch is shown by Locke to Jack and Sayid, and Walt gives Locke a warning not to open it.

23Exodus: Part 1

Danielle Rousseau arrives in the camp of survivors at the beach and advises that "The Others" are coming, since there is a black smoke in the sky, and they have three choices: run, hide, or die. Jack recalls his meeting with Ana Lucia Cortez (Michelle Rodriguez) in the airport. Meanwhile, the group is launching the raft in the sea. Sawyer tells Jack the conversation he had with his father in a bar in Australia. Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley and the boring Leslie Arzt (Daniel Roebuck) go in an expedition to bring explosives from the Black Rock to blow the hatch and shelter the survivors against "The Others". Meanwhile, Jin and Sun make peace and there are farewells to Michael, Walt, Sawyer and Jin as they finally set sail on their makeshift raft to find help and safety.

24Exodus: Part 2

In part II of the cliff-hanging season final, the four castaways on the raft are surprised at sea by something unexpected: the appearance of four of the "others" from the island whom abduct Walt. Meanwhile, Jack, Kate, Hurley and Locke attempt to blow open the mysterious hatch, while the French woman, Rousseau, abducts Claire's infant, forcing Charlie and Sayid to chase after her in the jungle. Also, more background stories of the survivors final hours before boarding their doomed flight which led them to the island are shown.

1Man of Science, Man of Faith

After blowing the hatch open, Jack recalls the accident of Sarah, as well as a meeting with a guy called Desmond and how successful the surgery was. Kate shows the word "Quarentine" in the hatch door. While looking for the dog Vincent, Shannon has a vision of Walt telling her to beware of the "others". Jack returns to the caves and gives hope to the other survivors. Kate descends in the shelter and vanishes, and Locke tries to find her when she is captured. Jack comes back to the shelter trying to find Kate and Locke and finds a familiar face: Desmond.

2Adrift

Michael is drowning and Sawyer saves him, while Jin is missing. Michael recalls his fight against Susan for Walt in the justice and the reasons for Michael's desperate obsession for his son. They drift on a wreckage of the raft, with the menace of a shark. Michael blames Sawyer for the abduction of Walt and promises to bring his son back. Meanwhile, Kate releases herself from Desmond's captivity and escapes through a ventilation duct, while Locke tries asking Desmond questions about the underground facility they are in and about the use of the mysterious numbers. At the end, Michael and Sawyer reach the beach, and they see Jin escaping from "The Others".

3Orientation

Jack, Locke and Kate learn more secrets about the hatch when Desmond tells them why he is there and to punch in the number code every 108 minutes or a reaction will occur. More of Locke's background story shows a young John Locke becoming acquainted with Helen whom he meets at an AA meeting. Meanwhile, after being beaten and taken captive, Sawyer, Michael and Jin wonder if their captors are fellow survivors or the dreaded "Others."

4Everybody Hates Hugo

Disturbing memories from Hurley's past cause him to struggle with a task he's assigned inside the hatch to watch over the food storage locker. Meanwhile Sawyer, Michael and Jin discover the identities of their captors whom are what's left of a group of two dozen Flight 815 survivors from the tail end of the plane led by the tough minded Ana-Lucia Cortez who insists they walk to a more secure location. Claire uncovers a shocking piece of information about the fate of the raft when the message bottled washes ashore.

5...And Found

A desperate and growingly insane Michael sets off into the jungle by himself determined to find Walt, but discovers that he is not alone. Meanwhile, Sawyer and Jin are ordered by their captors, the tail crash survivors, to take them to their camp. But they are delayed when Jin and the hulking Mr. Eko are forced to go into the jungle to look for Michael before the dreaded "others" find him first. Back at the beach camp, Sun frantically searches for her missing wedding ring which triggers flashbacks to Sun and Jin's past showing how they met for the first time in early 1990s Seoul, when Jin was working as a doorman of a fancy hotel where Sun was staying at for a courtship engagement set up by her mother.

6Abandoned

Sawyer's wound becomes life-threatening as he, Michael and Jin make their way through the interior of the island with the tail section survivors, Ana-Lucia, Mr. Eko, Bernard, Libby, and flight attendant Cindy. Meanwhile, Shannon is once again haunted by visions of Walt, but she cannot convince a skeptic Sayid that her visions are real. More of Shannon's background story shows her difficult relationship with her late half-brother Boone and further detailing how her step-mother financially cut her off after the death of their father. Also, Charlie becomes jealous of Locke's interest in Claire, while Locke learns that Charlie took a heroin stuffed porcelain statue from the Beechwood plane wreck.

7The Other 48 Days

The harrowing first 48 days in the lives of the 23 tail section survivors are revealed, formally introducing Ana-Luca, Mr. Eko, Libby, Cindy, Bernard, and Goodwin detailing the first terrifying days and battling the dreaded "others", leading to their numbers dwindling, their hikes though the jungle, and meeting with Jun, Michael and Sawyer.

8Collision

In the aftermath of the killing of Shannon, Ana Lucia takes the pistol from Sayid and ties him to a tree. Completely deranged, she threatens the whole group, and later she releases Michael demanding guns and ammunition for Sayid. Mr. Eko takes the unconscious Sawyer back to Jack at the hatch bunker, who tries to save him with Kate's help. Meanwhile, Ana Lucia recalls her past in the police force... in the months after she was shot by a scum thief. In the mist of all this, the other survivors, Jin, Bernard, and Libby, decide to leave Ana Lucia behind and move to meet the other group for a joyful reunion.

9What Kate Did

As dawn ushers in another day on the island we see Jin and Sun sharing an intimate moment that is long overdue. Meanwhile, Kate is up in a tree picking fruit from the tall branches. As she slides back down the trunk, she slips, almost falling and spilling several mangoes to the jungle floor. As she crouches to collect them, she hears something behind her and turns to see a magnificent black horse standing in the morning mist. In a flashback, a young Kate waits on the stairs of her modest house when a pickup truck swerves down the dirt road and stops in front we get our first look at her stepfather and her mother's choice for a father: Wayne. He's happy to let Kate help him to bed, as long as it affords him another chance to lay his drunken hands on her. So when Kate tells him goodnight, she really means it. We see her go outside and ride off on her motorcycle as the house behind her explodes into a giant fireball. In the hatch, Sawyer is still delirious with fever as a result of his blood infection. As Jack checks his wounds Sawyer calls out for Kate. When Jack leans in a little closer he hears Sawyer say something that makes him a little dizzy himself. "I love her." And before he has time to process what that means, there is Kate herself anxious to take over his care once more. Jack attends the funeral services for Shannon and it's very difficult for everyone involved to keep a dry eye as Sayid says a final goodbye to the woman he loved. Back in the hatch, Kate has a very scary episode with Sawyer that shakes her to her core, so when Locke and Jack finally return to the hatch they find Sawyer unattended and the clock on the computer dangerously close to zero. Back in FLASHBACK, we get to see the beginning of Kate's "relationship" with the Marshal when he arrests her at the bus station after trying to flee the area. While transporting her back to Iowa, in the thick of a brutal rainstorm, they swerve off the road and crash into a telephone pole, allowing Kate her first chance at escape. After pushing the unconscious Marshal out into the rain, Kate looks to see what it was that forced them off the road. And standing there, in the middle of the road, just as placid as can be, is a very familiar-looking black horse. On the island, as Kate struggles with her feelings for Jack and Sawyer as well as with her sanity, Eko provides Locke with the missing piece of a puzzle that may ask more questions than it answers. Jack reaches out to Ana Lucia at a time when she needs a friend more than ever, and Michael discovers something new about the computer that just might hold the key to getting back his son.

10The 23rd Psalm

When Claire comments to Mr. Eko about the Virgin Mary statue which belongs to Charlie, he asks to see it, breaks it open, and exposes Charlie's secret to Claire. Mr. Eko makes Charlie show him the place where he found the crashed plane, while his past in Nigeria is presented in flashback. John Locke teaches Michael how to shoot a rifle, and Michael uses the computer to contact someone he believes to be Walt. Claire does not want Charlie to live close to her and her son any longer.

11The Hunting Party

The deranged Michael locks Jack and Locke in the ammunition storage room and leaves the shelter to go looking for Walt. Sawyer joins to Jack and Locke in an expedition to find Michael, but Jack asks Kate to stay with the computer at the hatch. While hiking in the jungle, Jack remembers the death of a patient, his comforting of the patient's daughter Gabriela, and how Sarah left him because work was always taking him away from the house, and her. The group is surrounded by "The Others" where their emissary, known as "Mr. Friendly" tells them that they must return to their beach camp without their guns, otherwise Kate, whom the others now have captive, will be executed before them. Meanwhile at the hatch, Hurley and Charlie pass the time playing old records, while Sun argues with Jin about wanting to help out Jack and the rest of the search party.

12Fire + Water

13The Long Con

Locke shares with Jack the combination of the locker of the weapons. While Jack and Ana Lucia are trying to gather people to form a defense army, the survivors believe that they are safe and have no interest to join them. When Sun is attacked apparently by The Others, Jack decides to get the guns for protection of the group. However, Locke is informed by Sawyer of Jack's intention, and moves the armament to a hidden place with serious and surprising consequences when Sawyer finds out and plots something of his own. Meanwhile, Sawyer recalls his former "long con" against a former girlfriend Cassidy.

14One of Them

After Sun's failed kidnapping attempt, some of the survivors begin to think that one of the "other survivors" might not have done it. When French woman Danielle Rousseau leads Sayid to a mysterious captive in the jungle, he becomes determined to find out if he is one of the "Others." Sawyer discovers Hurley's potentially devastating breach of the survivors' trust and blackmails him into helping track an elusive island creature that annoys Sawyer.

15Maternity Leave

A desperate Claire, along with Kate and the French woman, Danielle Rousseau, trek into the jungle to attempt a return to the scene of Claire's kidnapping where she believes she might find the cure for Baby Aaron's mysterious illness. Claire begins to recall her captivity with the "Others" of being drugged and living in a mysterious underground bunker complex where Ethan Rom, the "Others" leader Mr. Friendly, are there as well as meeting a mysterious teenage girl who helped her escape. Meanwhile, Jack and Locke must keep their prisoner a secret from the rest of the survivors. But Mr Ako finds out about Henry Gale, and has a private talk with the captive concerning his recent actions with the Others.

16The Whole Truth

Sun wrestles with the thought of telling Jin a newfound secret that she might be pregnant which threatens to upset the entire balance of the survivors' community. Sun recalls her time in South Korea how she couldn't tell Jin that she may not be able to bear children, while carrying on a possible tryst with her English-language tutor. Meanwhile, Locke enlists Ana Lucia to interrogate the prisoner, Henry Gale, in order to extract more information than he, Jack or Sayid could. Whe Henry draws Ana Lucia a map to the location deep in the jungle about a hot-air balloon he arrived in, she, Sayid, and Charlie venture into the jungle to find the balloon. But is Henry Gale telling them the truth?

17Lockdown

While alone in the hatch with Henry Gale, all the openings shutdown and John Locke becomes trapped in a room with him. He releases Henry to help him to open the hydraulic door, and he supports it with a tool box. When John tries to passes below the door, the box collapses and his legs are secured by the guillotine door. Locke recalls his former relationship with Helen and how his estranged con-artist father Anthony Cooper, returned to ask Locke for a favor. In the mist of all this, Henry tries to reach the computer through the ventilation duct. Meanwhile, Jack faces off against Sawyer in a card game on the beach over some food supplies. Also, Ana Lucia, Sayid and Charlie find the truth about Henry in the jungle and return to the camp.

18Dave

Hurley celebrates victory over his gluttony as he and Libby destroy all that remains of his "stash" of food he saved from the hatch. Sayid and Anna Lucia continue to interrogate "Henry Gale," attempting to learn his true identity. Hurley begins to have hallucinations, seeing a bald man in a bathrobe and slippers walking throughout the jungle. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn this man's name is Dave and he was with Hurley in the mental institution. Hurley begins to relapse into his old ways as Dave leads him back to darker days...

19S.O.S.

Bernard tries to convince the survivors to build a S.O.S. signal with rocks on the sand, hoping to be seen by a satellite or an airplane. His first encounter with Rose, who was terminal, and their romance, are disclosed through flashbacks. Bernard never gives up searching for the cure of Rose before crashing the island. Meanwhile, Jack invites Kate to join him in the woods to propose to "The Others" a trade between Henry and Walt. John Locke is intrigued with the words of Henry about the unnecessary use of the computer. Is Henry playing him for a fool? Elsewhere, Charlie assists Mr. Eko in building a proposed church for the rest of the survivors.

20Two for the Road

Jake and Kate find an exhausted Michael in the jungle and bring him back to the hatch for dehydration and medical treatment. Henry tries to kill Ana Lucia, but she is saved by John Locke in the last moment. Ana Lucia tries to convince Sawyer to give a weapon to her for killing Henry, and she has sex with him. She recalls her troubled relationship with her mother leading to the end of her career in the L.A. police force and her short connection with Jake's father Dr. Christian Shephard, who took her to Australia for his own agenda. Meanwhile, Hurley invites Libby for a picnic in a secret spot. When Ana Lucia is unable to shoot Henry, Michael offers himself for the assignment... but instead executes her in a stunning betrayal.

22Three Minutes

Michael requests Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley to go with him to the camp site of "The Others" to bring Walt back. Meanwhile, his experience and captivity during the last 13 days with "The Others" is disclosed, when he saw Walt and made a deal with their leader "Mr. Friendly", and the matron base camp leader "Ms. Clue" to return to his camp, release Henry, and betray Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley by leading them to their camp. Now completely insane and desperate to be reunited with his son at any cost, Michael willingly agrees to betray his friends. Michael is welcomed back by the survivors, but Sayid advises Jack that he strongly suspects that Michael is a traitor. After the burial of Ana Lucia and Libby, the survivors see a boat sailing near the beach.

23Live Together, Die Alone

After discovering a sailboat offshore with the delirious Desmond aboard, Jack and Sayid come up with a plan to confront "The Others" and hopefully get Walt back. Desmond's background story is revealed how he came up on the island and how he landed in the hatch. While Michael leads Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer into the jungle to be captured by the Others, Sayid, Jin and Sun sail on Desmond's sailboat to help them. Meanwhile, Eko and Locke come to blows as Locke makes a potentially cataclysmic decision regarding the "button" and the hatch, leaving Eko and Charlie to try to stop Locke from not fulfilling his duty to continue to push the computer button.

1A Tale of Two Cities

Jack, Kate and Sawyer are kidnapped by "The Others" and put in different environments. Kate has a shower, gets a dress and is invited to have breakfast on the beach with the leader Henry Gale; Sawyer is locked in a cage for wild animals and without food or water, being "awarded" when he hits a lever as if he were an animal; and Jack is locked in a sort of aquarium, being interrogated and controlled by his handler Juliet, who has a complete report about his life. Meanwhile, Jack recalls his divorce process with Sarah and how his desperation and rapid meltdown affected everyone around him, including his father.

3Further Instructions

The fates of Locke, Eko and Desmond are revealed after the implosion of the hatch, while Hurley returns to the beach camp to tell the tale of what happened when he, Jack, Kate and Sawyer encountered "The Others". A mute Locke makes a sweat-lodge and talks to the spirit of Boone who persuades him to rescue Mr. Eko from a polar bear cave with Charlie's help. Desmond also survived the implosion, but not quite the same. More of Locke's background is revealed how his life took a turn when he, living with a group of "farmers" picked up a lonely youth who was not who he appeared to be. Meanwhile, Claire is shocked to find fellow survivors, Nikki and Paulo, in Jack's tent.

4Every Man for Himself

Sawyer discovers just how far his captors will go to thwart any plans of escape he and Kate might have when they forcibly and surgically implant a pacemaker in his heart which will detonate if he tries to escape again. Jack is called upon to scrub up in order to save the life of one of "The Others,", a team leader, named Colleen, who was shot by Sun during the theft of the sailboat. Meanwhile, Desmond's behavior begins to perplex Charlie, Hurley, and the rest of the survivors when he starts construction on an unknown device outside Claire's tent.

5The Cost of Living

A delirious Eko wrestles with demons from his past, while Locke, Sayid, Desmond, and two other castaways, Nikki and Paolo, head back to The Pearl -- one of the Dharma Initiative's island stations -- hoping to find a computer that they can use to locate Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Meanwhile, Jack doesn't know whom to trust when two of "The Others" (Ben and Juliet) seem at odds with one another when Ben wants Jack to perform surgery on him to remove a potentially dangerous tumor whereas Juliet does not want Jack to do it.

Jack successfully deals the freedom of Kate and Sawyer along the surgery of Ben, and Alex helps them to escape from The Others in her boat. Meanwhile, Juliet recalls her life in Miami, when she developed a successful research of pregnancy treatment having her own sister as guinea pig. Then she recalls when she was invited to lead a research team in a laboratory in Portland.

8Flashes Before Your Eyes

The episode opens with reminders about Desmond's premonitions: Locke's speech, the lightning rod, etc. In the present, as Locke and Sayid inform everyone about Eko's death, Desmond takes off running. He manages to save Claire from drowning in the ocean, but his prescience has now become obvious to Charlie and Hurley. They use some whiskey from Sawyer's raided stash to try and find out what happened to Desmond and get an explanation as to how, as Hurley puts it, "that guy see the future, dude." When Desmond passes out drunk, through his eyes we then begin to (re)experience his past and event leading up to why he did not end up with Penny, though he obviously still loves her and wishes things had been different. Triggered when Desmond "pushed the button," the flashbacks are actually a form of time travel or a replaying of events in an alternate/parallel universe. Desmond struggles with his sense of d?j? vu and glimpsed of memories of the future as we see him living with Penny several years earlier in London, and his visit with her mean and snobbish father to look for employment. Soon, he must contend with choices and whether or not he can do things differently this time.

9Stranger in a Strange Land

Sawyer, Kate and Carl reaches their island at night, and the reluctant Kate wishes to return for Jack. Meanwhile, Jack is interrogated by "Others" constable Isabel about the incident with Juliet and when she mentions the meaning of his tattoo, he recalls his vacation in the paradisaical island of Phuket, in Thailand, where he dated the sexy, mystic and mysterious local Achara (Bai Ling). Ben has an infection in his spinal column, and Jack negotiates the freedom of Juliet, who was going to be sentenced to death for Pickett's murder in the policy of "an eye for an eye" of "The Others". Later Jack recalls what happened to him when he forced Achara to disclose her innermost secret.

Locke, Sayid, Kate, and Danielle find a communication center, another Dharma Initiative station called 'The Flame', in an isolated cabin in the woods and they capture the Russian sentry Mikhail Bakunin who claims to be the last surviving member of the Dharma Initiative. But Sayid immediately suspects that Bakunin is not who he claims to be. Sayid recalls his past while residing in Paris, France, when he was invited to work as a chef of a Iraqi restaurant, but actually he had been recognized as the torturer of the wife of the owner. Meanwhile, Sawyer plays ping-pong game against Hurley to try to win back his possessions, and loses his bet.

12Par Avion

Claire begins to find out the true relationship between Desmond and Charlie and about Desmonds new ability to see into the future and of his repeated fates of Charlie, she also has a ideal to use migrating birds from the island to send a message out, but does not know why Desmond want to sabotage her. Claire flashes back to several years earlier in Australia where the raven-haired Claire and her mother were in a car accident, leaving her mother in a coma. Claire then met her long-lost biological father: Dr. Christian Shepherd, Jack's father. Meanwhile, a power struggle emerges between Sayid and John, and Kate as they search out what appears to be some kind of complex that may house "The Others," as they force the captive Mikhail, with Danielle Rousseau tagging along, to the "Others" camp which leads them to a mysterious sonic perimeter surrounding their base.

13The Man from Tallahassee

Kate and Sayid are captured in the 'Others' village while trying to rescue Jack, but John Locke escapes and finds the recovering Ben trapped on his bed. John asks Alex to bring Sayid's backpack with the explosives, and then he goes to the submarine to destroy it. Meanwhile, John recalls how he became paraplegic after having another encounter with his con-artist father, Anthony Cooper, who John tried to thwart his latest con victim, and Mr. Cooper attempted to kill him.

14Exposé

Nikki comes to the beach where Sawyer and Hurley are playing ping-pong, stumbles, whispers some unintelligible words and apparently dies. Hurley doesn't understand Nikki's words: "Paulo lies..." and the group searches Paulo in the woods. They find him like Nikki and they believe the couple have been poisoned. Meanwhile, the past of the actress Nikki and the Brazilian chef Paulo in Sydney is disclosed, when they poisoned Nikki's lover and stole a fortune in diamonds, and detailing how they landed on the island and about them trying to retrieve the stolen diamonds with both attempting to betray each other showing their interactions with all the other characters, which were only glimpsed in previous episodes.

Sayid, Kate, Jack, and Juliet arrives back at the camp of survivors, and the group does not accept the presence of Juliet. Jack protects Juliet, while she recalls her arrival to the island and her relationship with Ben. When Claire gets sick, Juliet advises that Claire was the subject of an experiment with pregnant women carried by her, and she brings the necessary vaccine to inoculate and heal Claire. Later, Juliet recalls how she first arrived on the island three years earlier, her first meeting with Ben and the Others, and about the last assignment Ben gave to her a couple of days ago.

17Catch-22

Desmond's latest fragmented vision suggests that his old girlfriend, Penny, will crash-land onto the island. Desmond organizes a posse of himself, Hurley, Jin, and Charlie to come along with him into the jungle expecting Penny to parachute onto the island. But the vision also suggests that Charlie will die by stumbling upon a trip-wire if he comes along with them. But Desmond insists that Charlie must come along to make the vision come true. Meanwhile, Desmond recalls his days in a monastery in Scottland over 10 years earlier after leaving his old fianc?e, Ruth, a few days before their wedding where he later met Penny. In the present, Kate attempts to flirt with Jack, but he instead has eyes for Juliet, and Kate has another one-night stand with Sawyer.

19The Brig

Locke comes back to the survivor's camp and lures Sawyer, telling him that he had kidnapped Ben and wants Sawyer to kill him. He brings Sawyer to the old vessel, the Black Rock, and locks him in the brig with his father. After an ironic conversation, Sawyer realizes that Anthony Cooper is the man that deceived his mother and responsible for the destruction of his family. More of Locke's three days with the Others at their new camp is shown when Ben urged him to prove his worth to them by ordering Ben to kill his father, whom they brought to the island. But Locke does not have the heart to do it and plots to have Sawyer kill Anthony Cooper for him. Meanwhile, Desmond, Hurley, Charlie and Jin secretly bring the mysterious and wounded woman, Naomi, back to the survivors camp and hide in Hurley's tent. Hurley tells the secret to Sayid so he try to fix her radio to contact her vessel which lies about 80 miles away. But Kate sees the device and reveals the secret to Jake and Juliet. Locke releases Sawyer and gives a tape-recorder to him proving that Juliet is a traitor and The Others will raid her camp to get the pregnant Sun.

20The Man Behind the Curtain

On the day of his birthday, Ben recalls important parts of his life: when he was born, his mother Emily, pregnant of seven months, was hiking with his father, Roger, dying after the delivery in the woods nearby Portland, Oregon. Years later when he was a boy, Ben's unemployed father moved to the island with him accepting a job offer, but becoming a frustrated man with a simple position of janitor in the ultra-secret project 'Dharma'. His drunkard father blamed him for the death of his mother. But because of the island's mysterious power, the young Ben had visions of his Dharma teacher, Olivia, and decided to leave the compound, meeting the so-called 'Hostiles'. Years later, the grown-up Ben kills his dysfunctional father with poison gas while he leads the 'Hostiles' in an all-out attack against the village, killing the entire staff of Dharma Initiative, and Ben becomes their leader. In the present, Locke brings the dead body of his father, and meets Ben and The Others at their new base camp. The Russian man, Mikhail Bakunin, informs Ben about the arrival of Naomi on the island. Ben brings Locke into the jungle to meet the shadowy 'Jacob', his superior and leader who claims to know the secrets of the island, and after the weird reunion, Ben shows Locke the ditch where the remains of Dharma people were dumped. Meanwhile, Sawyer shows the tape to Sayid and the other survivors exposing the betrayal of Juliet. When Jack and Juliet arrives, the situation becomes tense.

While leading the survivors to the radio transmission tower, Jack meets Ben and Alex on their way. Ben invites Jack to talk with him alone in a clearing and tells that Sayid, Jin and Bernard killed seven "The Others", but have been captured. He calls his chief henchman, Tom, in a walkie-talkie and proposes to exchange the lives of the trio per Naomi's radio. He tells that all the castaway would be killed by Naomi's friends, who are not who Jack thinks they are, but Jack does not accept the deal and hears three shots. Jack hits and captures Ben and promises to kill Tom. Meanwhile, the Russian Mikhail breaks into the Looking Glass, shoots Greta and Bonnie following Ben's order, but Desmond shoots Mikhail with a spear gun and saves Charlie. He convinces Bonnie to tell the password, and she tells that it is the tune of Beach Boy's "Good Vibrations". Charlie stops the jamming of the transmission and talks to Penny, who asks their location and tells that she is not offshore in the vessel. On the camp, Hurley uses the Kombi VW, hits one enemy and together with Sawyer and Juliet, they save Sayid, Jin and Bernard. In some kind of future set months in advance, Jack is completely wasted, drunken and drugged, stealing drugs in the hospital, going to a funeral service, meeting Kate nearby the airport and telling her that they must return to the island...

1The Beginning of the End

Desmond returns to the castaways' camp on the beach where he relays Charlie's message which casts suspicion and doubt about the rescuers that are approaching the island on a freighter 80 miles away. Meanwhile, Jack and Locke argue about Jack wanting to leave the island, while Locke wants to stay and build a new life for them. Meanwhile, flash forward into three years in the future show a mentally disturbed Hurley having visions of the dead Charlie telling him to return to the island.

2Confirmed Dead

Four members of a supposed "rescue team" arrive on the island and are forced to bail out. They include scientist Daniel Faraday whom is found by Jack and Kate's group as well Miles Straume, a "spirit talker" and they try to find their grounded helicopter and their pilot, Frank Lapidus. Research specialist Charlotte Lewis is found by Locke, Claire, and their group where Ben knows Charlotte and that they are not here on the island to rescue them. At the beach camp, Sayid is also wary about the rescue people whom he suspects are there to mean them harm. Also, backgrounds are shown of the four "rescue party" members, Faraday, Charlotte, Miles, Frank, and Naomi and how they were recruited by a shady "third party" to find the mysterious island.

3The Economist

Jack deals with Frank and proposes to bring Charlotte back; in return, Frank would take Sayid to the ship. Frank accepts and Sayid seeks Locke with Kate and Miles, and when they meet each other, Sayid exchanges Miles per Charlotte. Meanwhile, in a flash-forward, Sayid becomes a hit-man and travels to Berlin, where he meets Elsa and has a brief affair with her.

4Eggtown

Kate is living with Claire and contacts Miles trying to discover what he knows about her past of runaway of the justice. Mile proposes Kate to arrange a brief meeting with Ben and in return he would tell her the requested information. Kate asks Sawyer to help her and she lures Locke, getting what she wanted. Meanwhile, in a flash-forward, Kate goes to trial where the main witness is her own mother.

Sayid and Desmond are introduced to Captain Gault immediately after the suicide of the crewman Regina in the supply vessel Kahana owned by Charles Widmore; when they are sent to their new accommodations, they meet the janitor Kevin Johnson responsible for the cleaning of their cabin.

8Meet Kevin Johnson

Sayid presses Michael to tell what has happened with him since he left the island. In a long flashback, Michael is in despair in Manhattan, since Walt refuses to talk to him after discovering the truth about the deaths of Ana Maria and Libby. When Michael decides to commit suicide in an alley, he is saved by Tom Friendly that convinces him to work infiltrated in the Kahana to save the lives of the survivors in the island. Michael commits sabotage in the radio room and in the engine of the vessel following direct orders of Ben. After the explanations, Sayid delivers the traitor to Captain Gault. Meanwhile in the island, Ben is released by Locke and convinces Alex, Karl and Rousseau to leave the camp and move to a hidden sanctuary.

9The Shape of Things to Come

Bernard finds the body of a man on the beach and Daniel identifies that he is the doctor of their ship. Meanwhile, Alex is captured and forced to shutdown the defense system of the housing compound, releasing a warning code. Ben organizes the defense of house and when Alex is executed by her captors, he releases the smoke monster to destroy the enemies. Meanwhile, in the future, Ben escapes from Tunisia to Iraq where he helps Sayid in the funeral of his wife Nadia; later Ben has an unexpected meeting with Charles Widmore in his suite late night in London.

Fake Locke realized Desmond was gone, but he was OK with that, because he was going to find Desmond and use him to destroy the island.In the L.A. timeline, Desmond got himself into jail so he could bounce Kate and Sayid, with Hurley and Ana Lucia's help, to take them to a charity concert.The End: We opened on scenes of Oceanic Airlines cargo at the airport, and scenes of our island residents in L.A. and on the island. In L.A., Christian Shepherd's casket arrived at a church and Desmond signed for it. Desmond told Kate the name of the man in the casket and couldn't believe it was "Christian Shepherd." Kate demanded that Desmond tell her why she was there, and he said, "No one can tell you why you're here." Desmond told her he wanted to leave, and set off to show her where he wanted to go.Back on the island: Sawyer wanted to know from Jack "what the hell just happened." Jack said he didn't feel any different. Jack told the group about the heart of the island and that it's a light, and that's what he is meant to protect. If Fake Locke can put out the light, "that's it for all of us." Sawyer set off to find "the magic leprechaun" while Jack, Hurley and Kate were going to find the heart of the island. Hurley had a bad feeling about Sawyer taking off alone.Back in L.A.: Hurley and Sayid pulled up to a motel and Hurley handed Sayid a tranquilizer gun. Sayid told Hurley none of this was ringing a bell. Hurley went to the room and Charlie was inside. Hurley was grinning widely at the sight of his old friend, but Charlie didn't recognize him. Hurley tried to convince Charlie to come willingly and perform at the concert that night, but when he didn't he shot Charlie with the tranquilizer gun and tossed him in the Hummer.Back on the island: Jack told Kate he took the job of island protector because the island was the only thing he had left in his life that he hadn't ruined. Hurley thought it would be so sweet if they weren't all about to die.Sawyer watched Fake Locke from afar, but Ben snuck up on him with a gun and Sawyer was exposed. Sawyer admitted he was looking for Desmond and when Fake Locke said that Sawyer and all of Jacob's "little candidates" were going to go down with the island, Sawyer said they were no longer candidates. Sawyer hit Ben and took off and Fake Locke said he didn't need to go after him. Ben told Fake Locke he thought he was speaking figuratively when he mentioned destroying the island, but Fake Locke said it was going to be left at the bottom of the ocean. He saw a dog's paw prints on the ground and we next saw Vincent licking Desmond's face at a hut inhabited by Rose and Bernard.Rose told Desmond she and Bernard built the place in '75, lived there for two years and then the sky lit up again, "so God only knows when in the hell we are now." Bernard went off to get some fish while Rose told Desmond they won't get involved with whatever got him tossed in a well. Bernard came back with Fake Locke, who threatened to kill Rose and Bernard if Desmond didn't do what he wanted. Fake Locke gave his word he'd never hurt them, and Desmond went with him.Desmond said he assumed Fake Locke was taking him to a place with a very bright light. Fake Locke thought he heard something and scowled at Ben. Ben turned down the walkie talkie in his pocket. Miles was trying to reach him because he'd found Richard. Alpert wanted to go blow up the plane.Back in L.A.: Miles saw Sayid at the charity concert and called Sawyer to tell him. Sun, the only living presumed witness to Sayid's shootout, was at the hospital and Sawyer was going to check on her. Sun's doctor was Juliet, and when she began performing the ultrasound Sun had a flash of when Juliet had done the same test on the island. She also got her alternate timeline flash, which included all the good and bad times with Jin on the island, including their death, and she cried. Sun said, "I remember." And she knew her baby was a girl.Sawyer ran through the jungle until he reunited with Jack and crew. He told them Fake Locke said he was going to destroy the island. Jack knew they were both going to same place, regardless of who found Desmond first."Then what happens?" Sawyer asked."Then it ends," Jack said.Back in L.A.: Jack was preparing to operate on Locke. Jack reassured Locke that he was confident the procedure would work, but admitted, "There's always a chance that I could kill you." They laughed and Locke asked Jack whether the airline found his dad. He said he hoped it would bring Jack some peace."If I can fix you, Mr. Locke," Jack said, "that's all the peace I'll need."Back on the island: Miles found a gray hair on Richard's head, and plucked it. He handed it to Richard, who smiled and said he just realized he wanted to live. They started to canoe to the other island and a body hit their boat. Then they spotted Frank, who was calling for help. Richard told him they were trying to go blow up the plane so the smoke monster couldn't use it to leave. Frank suggested they take it, and he could fly it.Jack and Fake Locke's groups met at a clearing and Kate started shooting. It did nothing. Jack and Fake Locke had their showdown. They agreed to walk to the heart of the island together and Jack told Fake Locke that his plan to destroy the island wasn't going to happen. Jack said, "I'm going to kill you."When Fake Locke asked how he planned to do that, Jack said, "That's a surprise.""OK, then," Fake Locke said. "Let's get on with it."Back in L.A.: Juliet was revealed as Jack's ex-wife, but they were more than pleasant with each other as Juliet headed off to the concert with their son. Sawyer then showed up at the hospital to see Sun.Back on the island: Sawyer asked Jack how he was planning to kill Fake Locke. Jack said Desmond was his surprise. He thought Desmond was a weapon sent by Jacob.When they got to the bamboo field, Fake Locke said it could just be him, Jack and Desmond from that point on. They headed off and Hurley told Jack he believed in him.They got to the waterfall and Fake Locke tied a rope to a tree. Jack tied the other end around Desmond's waist as Desmond tried to tell him none of it mattered. He said he was going to go down into that light and end up in another place, where the island never existed, and he told Jack about what we know as the alternate timeline. Jack didn't believe him, though, and said there are no shortcuts. "What happened happened," Jack said.Desmond ventured toward the waterfall and looked down.Back in L.A.: Hurley told Sayid he wasn't allowed to tell him what they were doing parked outside of a bar. He said he trusted Sayid because he's "a good guy." A fight spilled out of the bar and Hurley and Sayid just watched. But when a blond woman came outside to break it up and got tossed into a wall, Sayid got out and broke it up himself. It was Shannon, and at their first glances of each other, they each flashed their memories of the island. Boone, who was the guy getting beaten up, was in on the plan and told Hurley it was a pain to get Shannon back from Australia. Hurley said it was worth it as they watched Shannon and Sayid kiss.Back on the island: Miles radioed Ben and told him they were on Hydra Island and were going to take off in the plane. Suddenly, Claire walked up with a gun and started firing at the ground. She thought "Locke" sent them to kill her and Richard told her they had a chance to go home. He asked if she'd come with them and she said no, and walked away.At the waterfall, Jack and Fake Locke lowered Desmond down the waterfall together. Fake Locke asked Jack if it seemed familiar, lowering Desmond into a hole in the ground. "If there was a button down there, we'd be fighting over whether to push it." Jack told Fake Locke he wasn't John Locke, and that he was disrespecting his memory by wearing his face. Jack said Locke was right about the island, but Fake Locke said that wasn't true. "When this island drops into the ocean and you drop with it, you're finally going to realize that.In a scene reminiscent of the Season 1 finale, Fake Locke and Jack looked down over the edge of the waterfall as the camera looked back at them and descended into the hole.Back in L.A.: Claire went with Juliet and Jack's son to the concert and Juliet got a call from the hospital. She had to leave. Charlotte woke Charlie up backstage and then she saw Daniel and they introduced themselves. Daniel seemed to find her familiar. At Table 23, Desmond and Kate were sitting when Claire and David went and sat down.Dr. Pierre Chang kicked off the festivities, introducing Daniel Whidmore, accompanied by Drive Shaft. Charlie saw Claire in the crowd and they locked eyes. Claire seemed to have a contraction and got up to go to the restroom. Kate followed her.Back on the island: Desmond landed at the bottom of the waterfall and found the water from where the light came. There was an orb in the middle of the water and Desmond stepped in. Suddenly, the electromagnetic power seized him, but he kept walking and picked up the orb, moving it from the center of the water. After a few moments, the light went out and the water vanished. The ground beneath him started to crackle and red light broke through and Desmond screamed in pain.Fake Locke said it looked like Jack was wrong and the island shook as they walked out of the now-dry waterfall. Jack chased him, punched him and Fake Locke bled."It looks like you were wrong, too," Jack said.Fake Locke grabbed a rock and hit Jack across the face with it, then he took off.Back in L.A.: Kate helped Claire while Eloise went to Desmond's table and said she'd made it clear he was to "stop this." He said he chose to ignore her. He said once "they know," they were all going to leave."Are you going to take my son?" she asked, as she watched Daniel play piano on stage."Not with me," he said, "no."Claire said she was going into labor and Kate began getting ready to deliver the baby. Charlie came backstage and Kate told him to get some water and blankets. Claire began to push and Kate had a flash of helping Claire deliver Aaron on the island. Aaron was born and Kate handed him to Claire, and all three of them cried.Charlie brought a blanket and Kate cried and thanked him."It's just a blanket," he said. Kate asked him to give it to Claire. He did and Claire held his hand, and Charlie's face lit up and he flashed to the island memories he had with Claire.Desmond came and found them all backstage and asked Kate if she understands. She nodded and said, "So now what?"Back on the island: The island shook violently and trees fell. Ben pushed Hurley out of the way of a falling tree and was pinned down by it himself. Jack came to and went back into the waterfall, seeing only the bright red light and hearing no response when he shouted Desmond's name.Sawyer, Hurley and Kate tried pulling the tree off of Ben to no avail. Sawyer told Kate that Fake Locke must have been right and the island was going down. Miles radioed again and Kate responded, asking if Claire was there. Miles said Claire was there but didn't want to leave the island. Frank was working on the plane and said that even though he needed five or six hours to get it ready, they were leaving in one hour. Ben, still trapped, said he could get them there in Locke's boat.As rain poured down, Fake Locke looked off a cliff at his boat floating in the water. Jack called out and they ran at each other for their big hand-to-hand fight. As huge chunks of the island broke and fell into the sea, Locke stabbed Jack in the stomach. Locke was just about to press the blade into Jack's neck (the knife's edge had cut just slightly into Jack's skin) when Kate shot Fake Locke in the back. Fake Locke said they were too late, but Jack kicked him off the cliff and Fake Locke hit hard, presumably dying on impact.Back in L.A.: Locke's surgery was done and a nurse noticed blood on Jack's neck. Locke seemed to be waking up from the anesthesia earlier than expected. Locke woke up and Jack smiled."It worked," Locke said. Jack said it was unlikely he would gain sensation that quickly, but Locke started moving his feet, and he flashed on his island memories, including when he first saw his legs move after the crash. Locke asked Jack if he saw that, and Jack then flashed at seeing them looking down the hatch together. Locke said they needed to go, but Jack said he needed to go see his son. Locke told him he didn't have a son."I hope that somebody does for you what you just did for me," Locke said.Back on the island: The sun now shining brightly, Kate saw Jack's stab wound and told Sawyer and Hurley that "Locke's dead. It's over." The island shook again and Sawyer said, "It sure don't feel like it's over."Back in L.A.: Sawyer arrived in Sun's room and asked if they'd seen Sayid. They were trying to protect him. Sun told Sawyer he didn't have to protect her and added that she and Jin were "safe." As the happy couple left the hospital room, Jin told Sawyer, "We'll see you there."Back on the island: Frank was getting close to fixing the plane. Kate wondered why the island was still shaking if Fake Locke was dead. Jack said he had to turn back on whatever Desmond had turned off. Jack told Kate and Sawyer to get on the plane. She asked Jack to come with them, but he said he had to protect the island. Ben and Hurley said they were sticking with Jack. He told Kate to go get Claire on the plane."Tell me I'm going to see you again," Kate said.Jack said nothing, and they kissed. They each said, "I love you," and Jack walked away as Kate cried.Miles and Richard were fixing up the plane and Frank told Sawyer over the walkie talkie that they were going to take off as soon as they could, so he and Kate better get over there. Kate and Sawyer jumped off the cliff to get to the boat.Back in L.A.: Sawyer saw Jack in the hospital hallway and asked where the vending machines were. Sawyer went to the vending machine and his candy bar got stuck. As he tried to wrangle his arm into the machine, Juliet saw him. They chatted and she helped him get his candy bar. She handed it to him and when they touched, they both flashed to the island. They hugged and cried and kissed.Jack showed up to the concert, but everyone was leaving. Kate came out and told him, "It's over." She was talking about the concert. He told her he was looking for her son. Kate looked at Jack and smiled. He asked where he remembered her from, and she said she stole his pen on Oceanic 815. She admitted, though, that wasn't how she knew him.She touched his face and said, "I've missed you so much," and he had flashes of the island. She said she knew he didn't understand, "but if you come with me, you will."Back on the island: Hurley helped Jack back to the dried up waterfall and Jack said he had to go in alone. Hurley said, "If Desmond didn't make it, how the hell are you going to survive?"Hurley said he wasn't going to let Jack die, but Jack told Hurley it needed to be him. Jack told Hurley he believed in him. Hurley accepted, but told Jack he was giving the island protection power right back to him once Jack safely came back up from restoring the light. He asked if anyone had something to drink from, and Ben handed him an empty Oceanic water bottle. Jack got just a bit of water and gave it to Hurley. He drank it and Jack told him, "Now you're like me."On Hydra, Frank got the plane's engines running.Hurley and Ben lowered Jack into the hole and as the island shook again, Jack fell to the bottom. He found Desmond, who was alive and said he put out the light but "it didn't work." He thought he'd leave the place. Desmond wanted to replace the stone, but Jack told him he'd done enough. He told him to go home and be with his wife and son. He tied Desmond to the rope."But what about you, Jack?" Desmond asked."I'll see you in another life, brother," Jack said.Sawyer and Kate arrived on Hydra and found Claire. The ground shook again and Sawyer saw another big chunk of the island fall into the ocean."Oh, that ain't good," Sawyer said.Sawyer could see the plane back up and said they had to go, but Kate was trying to encourage Claire to come with them. She asked Claire to let her help. Claire came along.Frank was moving the plane and Sawyer tried to contact him on the radio, but couldn't hear him. Just as Frank was about to take off, Sawyer stepped in front of the plane. Frank stopped it and told Miles to open the door.Jack, meanwhile, pushed the stone back into place in the middle of what was the light source.Claire, Kate and Sawyer jumped on board the plane and Frank roared the engines again. The plane sped down a stretch of land and the nose lifted just in time as they group looked out the windows and left the island behind.Jack watched and waited to see what would happen at the bottom of the waterfall and water began to pour down on him. Soon, the light illuminated again and he smiled. Hurley and Ben were amazed that it worked, and they pulled up on the rope in anticipation of seeing Jack. Instead, they pulled Desmond up to the surface. Hurley called out for Jack, who was still at the bottom, laughing in wonder at what he'd just done.Back in L.A.: Locke showed up at a church at night and found Ben sitting outside. Locke, in a wheelchair, asked if everyone was already inside. Ben said he thought they were. Ben apologized to Locke what he did to him, and said he was just jealous and selfish. Lock then said "I forgive you Ben." Locke asked Ben what he was going to do now and Ben said he had some things he needed to work out and was going to stay a while. Ben told Locke he didn't need to be in that wheelchair anymore, so Locke stood up and said goodbye. He went into the church.Back on the island: The water was flowing again and Desmond seemed to be OK, but Hurley was sad that Jack was gone. Ben said Jack did his job, and Hurley said, "It's my job now. What the hell am I supposed to do?"Ben told him to do what he does best: "Take care of people. You can start by sending Desmond home."Hurley said people can't leave the island, but Ben said that was how Jacob ran things and suggested, "Maybe there's another way -- a better way." Hurley asked Ben if he could help, and Ben said, "I'd be honored."Back in L.A.: Hurley stepped out of the church and told Ben, "We're all inside." Ben said, "I don't think I'm coming in." Hurley told Ben, "You were a real good Number 2.""You were a great Number 1, Hugo," Ben replied.Jack and Kate rolled up and Kate asked Jack if he knew where they were. Jack said it was where they were going to have his father's funeral. She told him he could go around the back. She said she was going inside."We'll be waiting for you there, once you're ready," Kate said."Ready for what?" Jack asked."To leave," Kate said before stepping out of the car and walking into the church.Back on the island: Jack woke up above ground, next to the waterfall and all by himself.Back in L.A.: Jack went into the church through the back. He saw a casket and walked around it once. He placed his hand on it and had his flashes of the island, starting with his opening moment of the entire series when his eye opened after the crash, and continuing through various attempts to leave, being held hostage and finally kissing Kate on the cliffside. He opened the casket and it was empty.Then he heard, "Hey, kiddo."It was his father. Jack asked how he was there, and Christian asked, "How are you here?"Jack realized he'd died, too, and began to cry. His father hugged him. Christian said they were both real, and that everything that had happened to them was real, and all the people in the church were real. Jack realized they were all dead, too."Why are they all here now?" Jack asked."Well, there is no now here," Christian replied.Jack asked where they were, and Christian said this was the place they'd all made together so they could find each other."The most important part of your life was the time that you spent with these people," Christian explained. "That's why all of you are here. Nobody does it alone, Jack. You needed all of them and they needed you.""For what?" Jack asked."To remember," Christian replied, "and let go."When Jack said that Kate said they were leaving, Christian said, "Not leaving. Moving on.""Where are we going?" Jack asked."Let's go find out," Christian said.They walked into the church and Jack saw all of his friends from the island, smiling and hugging.We flashed to Jack, beaten and injured, walking through the bamboo field.Back in the church, he saw Desmond and gave him a big hug. He saw Boone, and they hugged, too.We cut again to Jack, struggling to walk on the island.In the church, he saw Kate and she smiled. They held hands and walked together.On the island, Jack leaned on a bamboo shoot and crumbled to the ground, holding his stomach wound.In the church, everyone began to take their seats as Christian walked down the center aisle toward the back doors.Back on the island, Jack laid on the ground as Vincent barked and licked his face, then laid next to Jack.Christian walked out of the church and the doors filled the space with light.Jack, laying on the ground on the island, saw the airplane pass overhead and smiled one last time as the camera focused in on his right eye and it closed. The screen fades out. It's over.(As the end credits roll, we see the Oceanic wreckage from season one, reminding us where this all started.)

1Epilogue: The New Man in Charge

Jimmy Fallon arrives to host the Emmys in a tiny tiny Smart car. He's carrying his tux and runs into the Glee folk out front. They tell him they can't afford to go to the Emmys and an intro premise is born. They'll put on a fundraiser. They run into Tina Fey. She's in!They run into Kate Gosselin. Awkward pause. They tell her they've got too many people - and then go for more people. They run into Jon Hamm practicing his dance moves with his instructor - Betty White. Then Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester from Glee) gives them a slushie in the face -- and wants in.Walk down the hall to Springsteen's "Born to Run" with Jorge Garcia (Hurley from Lost), Joel McHale and company singing. Tim Gunn arrives to put on the finishing touches.They take the stage in "Glee" red and black gear and Jimmy takes the mike doing his best Bruce. (It's not bad.) Randy Jackson joins him to jam. Hamm and Fey ham it up dancing. Big smiles from the audience.Out of breath, Jimmy starts his monologue, which quickly segues into him strumming a guitar. He's wearing tux top and jeans bottom."NBC asking the host of late night to come to Los Angeles to host a different show, what could possibly go wrong?" (Zing! Conan reference - cut to Conan, big cheers. Conan salutes.)Jimmy grabs Amy Poehler from the front row to sing.Jimmy: "The first category is comedy."Amy: "You're doing great so far...."Jimmy: "I've been drinking since three."Screens descend from the stage and we watch a montage of the nominees.Jon Hamm and Betty White are the first presenters. Hamm: "I may be only speaking for myself, but how about our sexual chemistry during that opening number?"White: "How about our sexual chemistry back in that quick change room?"(Awkward but enthusiastic randy-old-lady laughter.)The nominees for best supporting actor in a comedy series are introduced. The winner is... Eric Stonestreet from "Modern Family."He says all he wanted to be when he was a kid was a clown. (They cut to his co-star an on-screen boyfriend Jesse Tyler Ferguson in the audience and he's openly crying.) He gives a shout out to his mom in the audience and dad at home, telling them they get to keep the Emmy.John Hodgman introduces himself as our backstage color commentator.On stage, Jimmy explains the concept of having people submit intros for presenters via Twitter. The first two aren't exactly home runs. One says Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory" is "bringing nerdy back" and Sofia Vergara of "Modern Family" is "beautiful."Somewhere Bruce Vlanch thinks his day job is safe.Jim introduces a bit that asks comedy writers when they first got a laugh. Christopher Lloyd and Steve Levitan of "Modern Family" do a take-off on the Old Spice commercial, on a horse. They also win."It is absolutely mind blowing to think that just two short years ago "Modern Family" was just an idea Chris and I had when we were out riding our horse...." Levitan begins. He thanks ABC and the cast and their spouses."I also want to thank our wives, without whom, well, we'd probably be dating around a lot."Stephen Colbert is up next and says hello to the ladies, and the women. He's presenting supporting actress in a comedy. He explains that he's not one of those guys who thinks gals can't be funny. Just look at John Travolta in "Hairspray," or Dustin Hoffman in "Tootsie," and don't forget Tom Hanks in "Bosom Buddies."Cut to Tom in the audience. Stephen says: "Madam, you still look lovely as ever. How do you keep your figure?" He introduces the nominees. The winner is... Jane Lynch.She thanks her parents for being so unintentionally hilarious. She raves about her ensemble and says she rarely identifies herself as anything, "I'm like a Buddhist in that way - although I'm not a Buddhist, they do seem like a very calm people," but she is an actor and feels compelled to do it. She thanks her "Lord and Creator Ryan Murphy."She throws out an "I love you" to her cast and wife.Lauren Graham and Matthew Perry are out next. (Jimmy's intro somehow involves Teddy Grahams.) They introduce guest actor and actress in a comedy series, awarded last week. Betty White won for "SNL" and Neil Patrick Harris for "Glee."On to directing in a comedy series. The winner is... Ryan Murphy for "Glee."He dedicates his award to all of his teachers, "who taught me to sing and finger paint."The "Modern Family" cast hearing pitches for how to improve their show from the new head of ABC. One involves a cross-racial adoption by Cam of Stewie from "Family Guy," Sofia Vergara in 3D, the next are worth finding on YouTube... including one that has Julie Bowen saying she was sad when a tree fell on Phil and killed him, but when his brother showed up at the funeral....pan over to the brother... George Clooney, sitting on a couch with Julie Bowen. The cast runs with the idea, cut to George with Sofia Vergara. Then with Eric and Jesse.Next up, best actor in a comedy series. The winner is... Jim Parsons from "The Big Bang Theory."He thanks his costars, director, writers and production studio.Last year's host Neil Patrick Harris takes a moment to thank the Academy for allowing a gay man to host the show two years in a row. He tells Jimmy he's doing a great job.NPH introduces the best actress in a comedy nominees. The winner is...Edie Falco for "Nurse Jackie.""This is just the most ridiculous thing that has ever happened in the history of this lovely awards show. I'm not funny!"Back to Jimmy in the audience with a guitar and a Kardashian. They introduce reality TV and some highlights.Will Arnett and Keri Russell, stars of "Running Wilde," present best reality show. But first, Will reads some prose from a piece of paper: "My Favorite Part of a Woman,' by Will Arnett. 'Oh luscious mounds...'"Keri tells him they cut that part.They introduce the nominees. And the winner is... "Top Chef"! The first time "Amazing Race" hasn't won since the category was created. Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons are there with the producers.Back to Jimmy and the guitar.Jimmy: "I cry sometimes when I watch these shows."Julianna Marguiles: "I cried when they announced you as the host."Slap fight leading into the drama category. Roll clips. Cheers for 24, Lost...Jimmy introduces Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni: "Earlier, these stars of Law & Order: SVU teamed up to save the most special victim of all: the 10 p.m. time slot on NBC."The introduce writing for a drama series. The winner is: Matthew Weiner and Erin Levy for "Mad Men."Erin thanks her dad who was also a writer and says she also has to really thank Matt. He agrees that she does.On to best supporting actor in a drama, which includes the last shot for Losties Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson. The winner is: Aaron Paul from "Breaking Bad."He marvels at the size of the audience, thanks the voters, his show creator and co-star Bryan Cranston.Back to Jimmy and the Tweets, including one from @SamuelLPaxton who says presenter Nathan Fillion is "straight off the meat rack, yo."He introduces supporting actress in a drama. The winner is Archie Punjabi from "The Good Wife."She thanks everyone with the network and show in her native London accent. "To everyone who voted for me, this is just amazing for my career, thank you so very much."Edie Falco is back out to introduce best actor in a drama. The winner is... Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad." (A total shut out for the men of "Lost" in the acting category.) It's Cranston's third win.He tells his fellow nominees he's honored to be mentioned with them. He shouts out to his wife and daughter, "I love you more than baseball."The Emmy Show Clock shows us we're running 2 minutes over. The stars of NBC's new "Undercovers" introduce the nominees for guest actor and actress in a drama series. The winners were John Lithgow for "Dexter" and Ann-Margaret for "Law & Order: SVU."They're up to hand out the next award. (Yes, Ann-Margret still looks amazing.) They're presenting outstanding directing for a drama series. The winner is...Steve Shill for "Dexter," giving Lithgow to correct thanking HBO instead of Showtime when he won his guest Emmy.The Emmy ticker tells us George Clooney will be up in 17 minutes.And now, a musical tribute to three shows we lost this year. Jimmy sits on the stage at a pink piano in full Elton John gear and croons good-bye to "24" to the tune of "Candle in the Wind."Sample lyric: "I would like to thank you for all the torturing/ and Jack and Chloe and CTU/and the first black president."Then on to Boyz II Men's "Hard to Say Goodbye" for "Law & Order," and Green Day and "Time of Your Life" for "Lost": "The island was mythical, but in the end they died/I didn't understand it but I tried."Tina Fey and Matthew Morrison introduce best actress in a drama.Matthew: "This year's outstanding nominees for best actress in a drama all have one thing in common, they are..."He says "beautiful" as Tina says "terrifying," then corrects herself for laughs.The winner is Kyra Sedgwick. She kisses Kevin Bacon and takes the stage. It's her first Emmy. She asks Tina to hold her Emmy so she can read from her notes. She thanks TNT and the crew, the cast and quotes Kevin saying "Let's all be good to each other.'Back on the guitar in the audience.Jimmy: "The people in this category are funny and talented."Stephen Colbert: "It's an honor to get nominated, just like Jimmy Fallon did."Jimmy: "Stephen, I wasn't nominated."Stephen: "It's still an honor."Jimmy: "I wouldn't know."Stephen: "Trust me."Variety. But now, he's lost a bit of weight.""I'm saving the really offensive stuff for the Golden Globes," Ricky says. He riffs on the lack of alcohol and says there's no one scary here, like Mel Gibson. He stops himself, saying he's not going to have a go at him. "He's been through a lot... not as much as the Jews."Then he asks who wants a beer and has waiters bring out beers on trays for people in the front row. "The Office is in syndication, those are on me."Directing for Variety is next. Ricky says he hopes the winner is Bucky Gunts (for the Olympics) "because I didn't know you could say that on television... let's face it, we're all Bucky Gunts here..."Ricky introduces the winner: Bucky Gunts!Then, on to outstanding variety, music or comedy series, the noteworthy nominee here being "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien."And the winner is..."The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," who isn't there, but not because he's appearing on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew," the producer tells us.The CEO of the Academy comes out to introduce the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, going this year to George Clooney, only the fourth time it has been given. His "ER" costar Julianna Marguiles introduces him, saying he was a driving force behind "America: A Concert for Heroes," "Tsunami Aid: A Concert of Hope" and "Hope for Haiti Now."He comes out to standing ovation, over his objections. "Don't do that because then I feel like maybe I'm sick and don't know it," he says. He says Bob was a friend of his aunt Rosemary Clooney and represents the best version of celebrity. "It's important to remember how much can get done, because we live in such strange times where bad behavior sucks up all the attention in the press."He makes a plea for attention to stay on disasters even after the cameras have gone.More Jimmy with a guitar. He kneels next to Hanks.Jimmy: "The Pacific nominated for two dozen awards/ better break the news to Spielberg, you're running out of wars. The winner is David Strathairn, who co-stared with Danes in "Temple Grandin."He raves about teachers and Temple Grandin and we see her waving in the audience.Then on to Jewel, who tells us she wrote the song "Shape of You" for a friend who passed away from cancer. It's the Memoriam segment, including Art Linkletter, Soupy Sales, Jean Simmons, Peter Graves, Robert Culp, Corey Haim, Andrew Koenig, Gary Coleman, Rue McClanahan, Captain Phil Harris, Dixie Carter, Lynn Redgrave, Lena Horne, Dennis Hopper.Maury Tierney and Blair Underwood present writing for mini-series or movie. The Emmy goes to Adam Mazer for "You Don't Know Jack."He urges people to talking about the end of life debate. "Jack Kevorkian, I'm so glad you're my friend, but I'm even more grateful you're not my physician."Then lead actress in a mini-series or movie. The winner is Claire Danes for "Temple Grandin."She thanks HBO and Temple, who cheerfully stands up and waves again from the audience.Welcome the cast of "True Blood." It's apparently getting late in the show, Jimmy introduces them, saying they really "suck."But the intro bit runs with it.Stephen Moyer: "By an obscure and ancient Emmy bylaw we are now required to make at least one vampire pun while presenting the next award."Alexander Skarsgard: "Stephen, don't - this is going to be quite painful. Allow me: It is now our bloody thrill-Moyer: "Brilliant."Skarsgard: "It was worse than I thought - to present the next award for outstanding directing for a miniseries or movie."The winner is: Mick Jackson for Temple Grandin.Back to the vamps. Skarsgard thanks Ricky Gervais for the non-alcoholic beer.They introduce best actor for mini-series or movie. The winner is: Al Pacino for "You Don't Know Jack."He says it was a pleasure to know Kevorkian (who is in the audience). He thanks everyone and doesn't get played off stage because, well, he's Al Pacino.Laurence Fishburne introduces the nominees for outstanding miniseries. The winner is "The Pacific." Tom Hanks accepts and thanks HBO.The award for made-for-tv-movie goes to "Temple Grandin."The executive producer gets bear-hugged by her autistic subject mid-speech.Jimmy tells us there are two awards left. "You know the next presenter from the hit series "Magnum PI," but I know him as...my real father. Tom Selleck, everybody. Dad, come on out!"Jimmy hugs a startled Selleck to fully sell the bit. He introduces the best drama nominees. "Mad Men" wins its third in a row."So where was I?" Matt Weiner begins as he picks up his writer speech where he got cut off. He thanks the cast and AMC and wraps up quickly.Ted Danson is out to wrap things up with the nominees for best comedy series. The winner is: Modern Family. (The camera manages not to cut immediately to Tina Fey.)Steven Levitan thanks his amazing cast "who makes us forget how much we hate writing, every day." He thanks their writing staff. "Chris and I get so much credit for what is often their amazing work and I just want to say: that's Hollywood, dude."And there you have it. Jimmy wraps up, popping champagne and shouting, "After-party at Betty White's house!"
