20 May 2010Description ▼
Meredith started the night by talking about how a hospital, for most people, is a scary place where bad things happen. But for her and the doctors, the hospital is a sanctuary. Cristina and Callie, meanwhile, started the episode crying over their breakups and Meredith took a pregnancy test that was positive. Meredith's voiceover said she loves it at the hospital -- then, after passing by Mr. Clark (the man who's been distraught over his wife's death at Seattle Grace and is suing the hospital), she corrected herself and said she "loved it here."Meredith told Cristina she wasn't trying to get pregnant, but was happy nonetheless. Cristina told Meredith that she was over the Owen-Teddy thing. Mr. Clark was looking for Derek.Arizona got a little girl who needed an appendicitis. Teddy was mad at Hunt and told him she wanted a little bit of peace. Bailey and Charles were treating a young woman (played by Mandy Moore) who wanted her follow-up surgery so she could get rid of her colostomy bag.Hunt and Teddy were treating a man who'd been in a car accident and was then shot by the guy in the other car. His wife was distraught and Hunt gave her a moment to say goodbye to her husband before surgery, just in case it was the last time she'd see him. Cristina and Hunt had a little run-in before Hunt took off for surgery. Teddy asked Cristina to cover her post-ops.Mr. Clark continued looking for Derek and when he'd been blown off by a few different doctors he found Reed and asked her where Derek's office was. She told him she wasn't a tour guide and he pulled out a gun and shot her in the head. Alex came around the corner to see what happened and Mr. Clark shot him in the chest.Alex dragged himself, bleeding and unseen by anyone, into an elevator. No one else was aware of anything having happened. Meredith talked to Derek and told him she had some stuff to tell him over dinner that night. She went to run Sloan's post-ops. She then told Derek to look forward to a lot of "dirty sex" that night.Hunt asked Cristina to scrub in on his surgery with Teddy but she refused. Hunt went after her. Christina asked Hunt if he loved her or Teddy and he hesitated, so she said she was done. Dr. Kepner was in a storage closet when she slipped on the pool of blood from Reed's gunshot. She went to Derek in a panic and eventually was able to tell him Reed had been shot and was dead.Mr. Clark and Cristina were in an elevator together and he asked where Derek's office was. She gave him fairly precise and polite directions (obviously not knowing he had a gun) and he thanked her. He got off the elevator and told her to "have a nice day.""You, too," she said.Alex was losing blood and struggling to breathe, but no one had found him. Derek scrambled to figure out the protocol for locking down the hospital. In a restaurant nearby, Webber was having breakfast when he saw a bunch of police cars speed by. Arizona got word of the lockdown and sealed the pediatrics floor. It just so happened that Callie was there too and couldn't leave.Derek went into Hunt and Teddy's surgery and pulled Avery aside to tell him about the shooter. He told him not to say anything about the shooter until the patient was stable and that no one could leave. Christina and Meredith were stuck in a quiet hallway when the lockdown happened. Meredith decided to tell Derek right away about the pregnancy. Then Cristina told her about her breakup.Sloan was getting flirty with Lexie when a nurse saw Mr. Clark going up a flight of stairs. She shouted to him that he couldn't leave the area and he turned around and shot her, setting off a frenzy on the floor. Sloan grabbed Lexie and took her toward an elevator for safety and when the doors opened they saw Alex laying motionless and bloody.Webber got to the hospital and a cop told him what happened but wouldn't let him inside. Sloan and Lexie took Alex into a meeting room and started working on him.Christina and Meredith walked around the empty wing of the hospital talking about the baby situation. Derek found them and told them about the shooter. He locked them in a room and told them not to move.Bailey was trying to tell her patient about the "situation" in the hospital when Charles burst into the room and said the shooter was on their floor. Bailey told Charles to hide and told her patient to play dead and covered completely with a blanket. Mr. Clark walked into the room, found Charles hiding, and asked if he was a surgeon. When Charles said he was a surgeon, Mr. Clark shot him. Then he saw the patient laying on the bed and pulled down the blanket. When he realized he was looking at a dead woman he got very upset. He then dragged Bailey out from under her patient's bed and asked her at gunpoint if she was a surgeon. Bailey, shaken, said she was a nurse and Mr. Clark said he was sorry for the trouble. He reloaded his gun and walked out of the room.Sloan and Lexie kept working on Alex, who was screaming in pain. and Lexie had to shut him up so Mr. Clark wouldn't hear them.Callie and Arizona were arguing about their breakup when her appendicitis patient began screaming in pain. Bailey was trying to treat Charles' gunshot and she talked Mary, her patient, through the steps to help her. When Hunt's surgery was done, Avery told them they couldn't leave and Hunt was angry with Avery for not having said anything earlier. Hunt had to get his patient to the ICU so he decided to take the man by himself and Teddy came along. Meredith was on the verge of throwing up in the room where she was locked with Cristina when Cristina saw Mr. Clark out of the small window. She realized he was the shooter and he was looking for Derek. Meredith puked.Mr. Clark found Derek on the bridge and Derek told him to get somewhere safe because of the situation in the hospital. He didn't want Mr. Clark to get hurt. Mr. Clark told Derek he was already hurt. "You hurt me when you decided to kill my wife," he said, raising his gun and pointing it at Derek.Sloan realized Alex needed a transfusion and Lexie said she'd go get the blood. She told Alex not to die. Cristina and Meredith went looking for Derek and across the atrium they saw Mr. Clark pointing his gun at Derek. Mr. Clark was telling Derek he was "a man," and he wasn't a man when he let Derek decided his wife should die. "I wasn't a man then, but I'm a man now," he said.Bailey was working on Charles and he asked her to be honest with him about whether or not he was dying. She lied and said no.Mr. Clark told Derek that someone had to protect people from him and told him he didn't get to play God. Derek began telling Mr. Clark about how he understood his loss because he watched robbers kill his father for his watch. He said he didn't become a doctor so he could be a god but so that he could save lives. Derek asked Mr. Clark to look him in the eye and he poured his heart out to him, telling him he was a human being and made mistakes. He was flawed. Derek told Mr. Clark that he could see in his eyes he was a good man."Can you see it in mine?" Derek asked.Mr. Clark lowered his gun, but Dr. Kepner came running up behind Derek and when Derek turned to look at her, Mr. Clark raised him gun again. In a slow-motion sequence, Mr. Clark pulled the trigger and hit Derek in the chest, Dr. Kepner panicked, and Meredith screamed.
24Death and All His Friends
20 May 2010Description ▼
Derek, in a voiceover, said life was full of choices and the last was whether to live or die. He struggled to breathe while Mr. Clark pointed the gun at Dr. Kepner, who rapidly threw out facts about her her life, her family, where she was from, and begged Mr. Clark not to kill her. He told her to run, so she did. Mr. Clark saw the SWAT team enter the hospital, so he turned and walked away, leaving Derek clinging to life.Cristina tried to keep Meredith from going after Derek, and told her that if she wanted to leave she'd have to go through her. So Meredith grabbed Cristina and tossed her against a wall and ran to find Derek.Meredith got to Derek and told him to stay alive. Cristina caught up to her and saw how much blood Derek had lost and knew they had to operate on him quickly. She went to get a wheelchair and found Kepner, who was still in shock.Alex told Sloan to eat more bacon and have more sex because you never know when you're going to die. Lexie ran into Mr. Clark in the hallway and immediately recognized him. He told her he didn't mean to kill all those people. He only meant to kill Derek and Dr. Webber -- and Lexie. He said she was the one who unplugged his wife's respirator, that her hands killed his wife. He raised his gun and Lexie took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Then -- a gunshot. But we next saw Lexie hiding and Mr. Clark lying on the ground. A SWAT team member signaled to Lexie to move away, so she did.Lexie went back into the room and told Alex to pull through. She said the whole thing was her fault because she pulled the plug on his wife. She told Alex she loved him and begged him not to die.In peds, Callie and Arizona were treating their patient when Mr. Clark walked in. Arizona saw the gun and told him, "There are only children here." She then turned around and covered the litle girl with her body, repeating over and over "There are only children here". Callie carefully and quietly gave Mr. Clark bandages and told him to press them to the wound and go. He thanked her and left. Callie went back to calm the little girl and Arizona, by talking about how great of a doctor she is and talked about her magical smile.Cristina made the plan to find Teddy and operate on Derek. He was holding on, laying on the surgical table, and asked Meredith to kiss him. Cristina and Kepner found Avery, who told them there was no attending surgeon on the floor. They decided Cristina was going to operate on Derek.Cristina braced herself for the surgery and told Meredith she couldn't be in the room. She gave Kepner orders to keep Meredith out of the room.Alex was in shock and looked up to see Lexie, but was saying, "Izzie, I'm sorry." He asked her not to leave him again. Lexie cried as she played along. A SWAT team member came into the room and told Lexie and Sloan their floor was clear and they were being evacuated.Dr. Webber was outside talking to the cops, but when the commanding officer turned to find him again, he was gone. Hunt and Teddy made it out of the hospital but Hunt wanted to go back in for Cristina. Teddy told him he should, so he did.Webber was inside the hospital too. Meredith told Kepner to stop crying, that Derek was Meredith's husband, and that Kepner didn't get to cry over him. Kepner told Meredith that Reed was her "best friend and she died today." Meredith held her hand.Sloan and Lexie brought Alex outside and Alex was taken to another hospital. In surgery, Cristina found the bullet right next to the aorta and she didn't know what to do but she made a plan.Bailey and Mary, meanwhile, were dragging Charles through the hallway but when they got to the elevators, they were off. Bailey freaked out for a moment, then gathered herself and went to sit with Charles. When he asked if he was dying, she said yes. She told him she and Mary were going to stay with him.Hunt showed up and Meredith told him what was going on. He looked through the window and said she appeared to be doing fine but he'd go in to see what he could do to help. When Hunt went inside, we saw that Mr. Clark was in the room with a gun to Cristina's head, shouting at her to stop fixing Derek and to let him die. Cristina and Avery refused to stop working. Hunt told Mr Clark that if he shot Christina, that he would kill him.Mr. Clark told Hunt that he'd shoot him first and then Cristina but he really only wanted to kill Derek. "An eye for an eye," he said. Meredith then came into the room and told Mr. Clark to shoot her. She explained that she's Lexie's sister, she's the closest thing Webber has to a daughter, and she's Derek's wife."If you want them to hurt the way you hurt, shoot me," she told him. "I'm your eye for an eye."He turned the gun toward Meredith, but Cristina said Meredith was pregnant. Hunt made a move toward Mr. Clark and was shot. Cristina and Avery then raised their hands and Avery told Mr. Clark that Derek would die and he could watch it happen on the monitor. Derek flat-lined and Meredith cried almost hysterically. Mr. Clark walked out. When he was gone Avery reattached Derek's heart monitors and his pulse reappeared on the screen. Cristina went back to work and asked Meredith to check on Hunt and see if he was dead. Meredith said he was alive and Cristina asked her to take him to another O.R. and fix him. Cristina then asked Avery to remind her to thank him later.Charles was still dying and told Bailey that he didn't hurt anymore, which he knew was a bad sign. He asked Bailey to find Reed afterward and let her know he always had a crush on her and he didn't think she knew. Mary said Reed knew because girls always know. Charles died.Meredith was trying to treat Hunt's gunshot when she felt a strong pain. Kepner was worried Meredith had been shot, then discovered blood spreading down Meredith's thighs. Meredith knew she was having a miscarriage but still proceeded to work on Hunt.Webber walked through the halls of the hospital and found some bodies. He found Mr. Clark, who told him he'd bought the gun at a superstore and bought extra ammo because it was on sale. He said he couldn't bring it all in his pockets because he wanted to bring his flask. He asked Webber to open it for him and Webber did. Mr. Clark took a swig and said he wasn't much of a drinker, but figured he'd need some "liquid courage." He offered Webber a drink and he declined.Mr. Clark told Webber he only had one bullet left. He said he planned on shooting Webber, then himself."Then it seems you have a bit of a problem," Webber said.Mr. Clark offered Webber a drink again. He took the flask, smelled the vodka and spilled it out. Webber told Mr. Clark his choice was really between a life in prison or a possible afterlife with his wife. I guess we know what choice Mr Clark made. The commanding officer found him and shook his hand.Mark and Lexie showed up at the other hospital. Alex was out of surgery. Lexie went to Alex. Mark watched Lexie take Alex's hand.Meredith took another look at her positive pregnancy test as Derek's voiceover repeated, "Human life is made up of choices: Live or die, that's the important choice."As Meredith tossed the pregnancy stick in the trash, Derek's voiceover said, "...and it's not always in our hands."

She tells Cristina that she can pretend the rules don't matter, but they do.Hunt tells Avery that leaving the chief's trial was such a bonehead move that he had to learn more, so he looked into it and realized that Avery didn't want to stay on the trial because it might win the Harper Avery award (which was named after his grandfather). He doesn't want to sign them.Derek gets a teenage girl who's suffering seizures and her mother wants to perform a surgery to help partially remove a tumor in her brain. Derek suggests a different approach -- which has never been done before and presents more risk, but could allow him to get the whole tumor. The mother refuses and Derek suggests she go with another surgeon before leaving the room.Derek explains to Owen that he doesn't want to do any "half-measures" anymore, and says he's frustrated with the "hope-for-the-best" approach because he's also waiting on social services to make a decision about Zola and just hoping for the best. Derek agrees not to send the girl and her mother home to San Francisco, where they came from specifically for Derek's services. But says he's going to prove to her that his way will work.Henry's device, which Webber was working on, has failed and he is going to have to get tested weekly again. He pulls out some of his work and Callie is impressed at the artistry. He says he doesn't sell it. "Collecting garbage pays the bills, but this... this keeps me sane." Callie tells him to let his wife know that she, Callie, is "kind of artist" herself.Derek is practicing his approach for the surgery he wants to try, but it isn't working.Meredith meets up with Cristina during her angioplasty. Meredith emails Janet, the social worker, to get an update on Zola. She gets a quick response back from Janet, saying she's on vacation. Meredith is upset. She's been waiting this whole time, picturing Janet fighting the fight for Zola, not sitting on a beach somewhere.Alex, meanwhile, argues with a clerk in the family court about Zola's case. The files are priviledged. He notices a mole on her face and offers to check it for free in exchange for information. She tells him the name of the judge handling the case, but says he's out that day because he's getting chemo for prostate cancer.Meredith randomly asks Teddy why Cristina is doing an angioplasty. Teddy tells Meredith she's teaching Cristina about respect, respect for the heart disease that she'll save for the rest of her career. She says, "You have to go back to the beginning to understand the end." This inspires Meredith.Henry is helping Owen rework the softball team's lineup. Meredith asks Webber for her mother's journals so she can look at Ellis' original hypothesis.Derek is working on his softball swing on the roof, with Lexie coaching him. She gives him some pointers, one of which is that he needs to adjust his head position. He stops cold and realizes that this is the problem with his approach on the surgery. He's been adjusting the angle of the probe but what he needs to adjust is the practice model's head.Derek goes back to the mother and tells her there's a "good shot" he can get it all. She's still not convinced and doesn't want to let her daughter be his guinea pig. He asks the mother, who's researched quite a bit about the tumor, if she's ever found evidence of a kid who had an HH tumor who got better and had a life.Owen is making final calls on the lineup and handing out uniforms, and Teddy gets the pitching spot she's been wanting because Derek will be stuck in surgery. Callie asks Owen to sign off on a bunch of titanium for the sanitation worker's hand. She says she's going to rebuilt it and "it's going to be really cool." Sloan is excited to get his uniform, saying he's going to look good. He high-fives Avery and Lexie seems a little jealous when Avery tells her that Sloan has been in "such a good mood lately."April is with Callie in surgery and she's complaining about how Owen isn't appreciating the organizational work she does. Christina says that April can handle it.Derek gets part of the brain tumor in his first pass, but has to remove the probe when things get a little complicated. He goes in for a second attempt to get the rest.Teddy asks Cristina, who is stapling up the sanitation worker's chest, why she let April do the surgery. Cristina is annoyed, thinking she's now going to be in trouble for letting April carry out the surgery that she had well in hand. But Teddy tells her to make a list of all the dream surgeries she wants to do and she'll try to get her some of them. She tells Cristina she's "done," but in a good way. She says Cristina proved she can work as part of a team, and that's the surgeon she's been wanting to see.Bailey comes into the trial lab to find Meredith looking into a microscope. She's upset, but Meredith explains that her mom's hypothesis was wrong and she figured out why. Meredith quickly explains the whole thing, noting that she discovered why the device wasn't working, and says she marked the journal page for her, then leaves.Derek gives his patient's mom the good news -- he got all of the tumor. Callie's patient has a hand. It will take some follow-up surgery and a lot of physical therapy. But she says it will work. The man reminds his wife, who's now in the room, the he'd said Callie was "an artist."Alex goes into the hospital room of the judge who's working on Zola's case. He's not there to talk about the man's cancer treatment, though. The judge says Alex's actions are "highly inappropriate." As Alex is leaving, the judge tells him that attempting to influence a judge is a federal charge. Alex leaves without saying anything further.Seattle Grace is down 8-0 and ready to give up. Cristina takes a swig from Meredith's flask. Meredith and Bailey get into a showdown in the outfield after Meredith asks Bailey what her problem is. The mother of Derek and Lexie's patient tells Derek she knows how dangerous the surgery could be, but wants to know whether he's willing to do it. He tells her there's a 5 percent chance the surgery will work, and she's willing to take the chance. One wrinkle, though, is that her son, who's 11, doesn't know he might die. He thinks he's at the hospital for a backache. "A very bad backache," she says.
Meredith talks to Bailey about Hunt's suggestion that she do general surgery. Bailey dismisses any concern Meredith has, saying that it's in Meredith's genes and makes perfect sense. They meet Webber's patients -- two bickering sisters, one of whom is giving her liver to the other. The donor sister is making a big issue of how she's risking her life to help her sister.
Cristina doesn't want Meredith to pick cardio, because it's hers. Alex shows Cristina an X-ray from the wrought-iron fence patient and says the man's heart is "the size of a football." Cristina and Teddy hatch a plan, and Cristina goes in when no one is around and talks to the patient's wife about how good of a doctor Teddy is and she'd assumed Teddy would be on the case.
The bickering sisters are at it again, with the donor making an issue of how she's missing a beach vacation with her family to save her sister's life. The ill sister says she'll never ask her for anything again. The arguing continues until the sick sister coughs up blood.
Bailey tells the woman to try not to get worked up for the next couple of hours before her surgery. She's refusing to take her sister's liver now, but the doctors convince her she has to do it.
As Lexie preps him for a scan, the 11-year-old boy asks Lexie if his tumor has grown more. Lexie is surprised he knows, but he says he overheard doctors at the last hospital talking about it. He doesn't want his mom to know that he knows his situation because that's the only thing that's making her happy. He asks Lexie if she thinks he's going to die, and she tells him her mom could not have picked a better doctor for him. He asks Lexie to promise she won't tell his mom that she knows about his tumor.
April and Avery are talking about moving out. Alex walks in on the conversation and says he's in, but April doesn't want to live with him. Alex asks Avery if he'll move in with him, but Avery doesn't want to give up April's cooking and cleaning. Meredith comes into the break room and scours Teddy's "widow casseroles," because she needs food for Zola's party.
Callie and Arizona try to talk Sloan into telling Julia he loves her. Teddy walks in on the conversation and Sloan leaves.
Webber starts the liver transplant -- his 10,000th surgery -- and several nurses stand around and applaud as he gets going. A few minutes later, a woman brings Adele into the hospital, saying she found Adele walking the street trying to get to the hospital -- which is seven miles from her home. April tries for a moment to figure out what to do, and in that time Adele disappears.
April quickly finds Adele in the empty office that used to be his, and she's convinced he finally left her. She breaks down and April tries to comfort her.
In surgery, Bailey plays up for Meredith all the appealing aspects of being a general surgeon.
Lexie goes to get her 11-year-old patient, whose mom starts crying when he's about to head out for surgery.
Hunt tries to talk to Teddy, who ignores him and then shouts at him when he tries to grab her arm as she walks away.
Derek and Lexie start the surgery, and Derek asks Lexie to walk him through what he should do. She's unsure at first, but then lays out a plan that Derek seems happy with.
April takes Adele to the gallery where she can see that Webber hasn't left her and is in surgery, but when Adele sees Meredith next to him she thinks it's Ellis Grey and goes into a tirade through the intercom about how he'd promise her he wouldn't work with Ellis again and questioning Meredith (who she's calling Ellis) about what kind of woman she'd have to be to break up a marriage. Meredith offers to scrub out, but Webber tells her he needs the extra hands. Adele continues to shout and Meredith suggests to him that he share with her a happy memory, which used to work with her mom. Webber starts singing "My Funny Valentine," which turns into a duet, all through the intercom. Webber reminds her about their wedding day, when they played that song. April cries at all this. Webber tells Adele he loves her, then turns to Meredith and asks her to tell Bailey to cancel the party.
Lexie runs through three more possible approaches for Derek, each of which he says will kill the boy. He's convinced there's no longer any chance the boy will survive, saying he thinks they have to close up. Lexie tells Derek that the boy knows about his tumor and that she promised him they would try to fix it. Derek tells Lexie to leave the O.R. After she does, he tells the nurse it's time to close up.
Hunt goes to what was supposed to be Webber's party and sees Alex serving up a piece of cake, instead of being in the wrought-iron fence guy's surgery. Alex says Teddy and Cristina took that, much to Hunt's surprise.
Derek is cleaning up and Lexie says he has to tell the boy about the tumor. Derek says they can't. It's his mother's decision. Lexie thinks the mother will continue to lie to her son and tell him it went fine, rather than telling him he's going to die in three months.
Hunt finds Teddy and Cristina doing the surgery. He's upset, but Cristina says the surgery is complicated so they should discuss it all later. He wants to see them afterward.
The 11-year-old boy's mother is tearfully telling him they can go on some of the trips they've been wanting to take because there will be no more surgeries. Derek and Lexie watch this, and the boy turns to Derek and says, "You didn't do it."
"What?" Derek asks. The boy says Derek told him after the surgery he'd be stuck in there for a few weeks. Derek tells him that sometimes when the doctors "get in there, things change -- that's why you get to home." The boy's mother tells him he's going to be OK, and he tells her she's going to be OK, too. He tells her he's "going to be with dad in heaven." She cries.
After the surgery, the sisters continue to argue. Meredith finally has to put them both in a timeout.
Teddy offers to stay the night with the wrought-iron fence patient, eating her "widow casserole" and feeling sorry for herself. Cristina heads off to Zola's birthday party.
Meredith finds Webber at the party, who says Adele insisted he attend. April asks Alex for money for the deposit on a new place. Alex is surprised she wants him to move in with her and Avery, and she seems to be, as well, but it's all going to work out.
Derek and Meredith agree to scrap Zola's name off the cake -- after taking a picture of it -- and decide to let Webber blow out the candle in honor of his 10,000th surgery.
Callie and Arizona give Sloan a hard time in front of Julia -- using the word "love" around her as much as possible. She goes to get a drink and Sloan tells them to stop. He says he's "not there yet," and wants to take it slow. He says he rushed it with Addison, "tried to force Lexie to be a grandmother," and he's not doing that again.
Hunt arrives and sees Cristina talking to Zola about how big the heart was she operated on, and he looks upset.
Derek sees Lexie, who's looking bummed. He tells her "they're not called 'lost causes' because they're fun." He offers to flip the coin over whether she'll keep doing lost causes or "the fun stuff." She catches the coin in mid-flight, insisting that she's in.
Cristina apologizes to Hunt, and he asks if she's sorry she did it or that he's upset. She doesn't respond. He tells Cristina that Teddy never came to find him after the surgery, and Cristina say Teddy is tired. Hunt says he's taking Cristina off Teddy's service permanently, and that he's not sure what Teddy will do without Cristina as her "security blanket."
"Absolutely not," Cristina tells him. She repeats it. Hunt says she should be thanking him because he could have fired them both. Cristina tells Hunt he has "no idea what's going on here."
"You made me operate on her husband, and now he's dead," she says. "She gets whatever she wants. Do you understand? Anything she wants from me -- ever."
Meredith tells Webber she's still not sure about general surgery because everyone keeps comparing her to her mother. Webber tells her that she's nothing like her mother, but she has a tremendous gift and she shouldn't waste it.
Hunt tells Cristina it was "an impossible situation," and she says it was his call to have Cristina operate on Henry and tell her who was on the table, and then had Cristina lie to Teddy. She tells him those are the big decisions and consequences he has to live with if he wants to be chief. It turns into a bigger argument about how it's "always" been about Cristina -- "You get whatever you want all the time," he says.
Webber is in the living room taking everyone down memory lane, telling everyone about his first surgery, but Hunt and Cristina's yelling in the kitchen distracts everyone.
Cristina claims "it was one surgery," but Hunt says it's not about one surgery. It's about the life he envisioned for himself. She asks him to try and forget it, but he shouts, "You killed our baby -- you don't ever forget that."
The entire house falls silent.

Thinking that everything in the world seems "so completely random," Meredith is in a "what if..." kind of mood. We see how her life and everyone at the hospital's lives are now, and Meredith falls asleep.
Meredith wakes up in a new "what if...?" word, in which she's wearing pink and living with her mother and "dad," who's actually Dr. Webber.
At Seattle Grace, we see plenty of familiar faces -- Bailey's in her intern-era dreadlocks, Derek and Addison seem happy and Addison's pregnant, Arizona is looking kind of edgy, Callie wheels in twin sons in a stroller and has a young girl with her -- and Owen is their dad. Ellis walks in as chief of staff, and she's being congratulated on her third Harper Avery Award. She's giving the surgeons a hard time for not doing enough. Callie and Arizona are arguing over a risky and innovative procedure being done on a patient. Bailey shyly presents what she's working on for the day -- an extended whipple -- and Ellis takes it from her.
Meredith shows April an engagement ring, but we don't know who it's from. Meredith tells April that she'll find someone, and mentions that Charles is really into her. Then we see Charles -- the Mercy West doctor who came over in the merger and was killed in the big shooting incident. Cristina walks into the locker room and everyone goes silent. Alex walks in and gives a peppy talk to the others. Then we see that he is the one who's engaged to Meredith.
After the staff meeting, Addison and Callie talk about Owen and Callie says she thinks they're "over it." She's referring to Owen's PTSD from Iraq, and Callie mentioned that some guys Owen Skypes with are helping him cope -- especially one named Teddy.
Webber gives Derek a pep talk and encourages him to pursue a clinical trial he's been talking about. Meredith and Derek end up waiting for an elevator next to each other, and Derek doesn't talk to her.
A tattooed young woman who's overdosed is wheeled in. It's Lexie.
Ellis tells the press to observe her surgery. Meredith asks if she can scrub in, but Ellis tells her to go work on a heart surgery. Alex learns from Bailey that Ellis has taken their whipple, and he tries to cheer the timid Bailey up.
Avery meets with Lexie, who gives her name as Lucille Ball. When Avery tells Lexie she's at Seattle Grace, she sighs.
Arizona and Callie check on their lung patient, who seems to have encountered some kind of problem with the risky treatment Callie has started, but everyone is happy when the boy starts breathing better than he should. Arizona gives Callie a hug, which gives Callie a moment of pause.
Bailey is trying to explain to her patient why she won't be doing the surgery, and that Ellis will be doing it instead. Alex tells them it's a "huge upgrade," and says it's like they've been driving a Civic and now they're getting a Jaguar. Ellis walks in and hurriedly explains the procedure she'll be doing before rushing out the door -- but not before Alex asks for and receives permission to scrub in. Bailey looks at the chart and leaves the room.
Cristina tells Lexie she's going to need some complicated procedure because of all the cocaine she's enjoyed. After Cristina leaves, Lexie tells Avery that both of her parents are dead. Her mother had "some stomach thing" and her father killed himself. She then admits she has a half-sister who works at the hospital, but they've never met and she doesn't think Meredith would want to.
Addison and Derek work together on a newborn baby that has a tumor. It seems Derek and Addison aren't getting as long as swimmingly as it previously appeared.
Meredith as a heart-to-heart with Webber.
The lunchtime banter includes Meredith, Alex, Avery and April -- all watching Cristina eat alone. They talk about how Cristina screwed an attending -- Preston Burke. They also refer to Izzie, whose Denny story seems complete, but it ended with Meredith turning Izzie in. Alex also mentions in passing that O'Malley "failed his intern exam and was never seen again."
Bailey is telling Callie she's concerned with the approach Ellis is going to take on her patient, but Callie is focused on Arizona having lunch with another female doctor. Bailey says that doctor is in ortho, and Callie says she should have stayed ortho, but "when Ellis Grey says you're good for cardio..." Meredith shows up and asks Callie if she can scrub in on her heart surgery. Callie first says no, but Meredith notes that her mom suggested she ask, and Callie suggests that she and Cristina split it.
Avery finds Lexie packing up to leave, and when she recites the heart procedure step by step he's impressed enough to suggest that she go to medical school and try to turn her life around. She cries.
Cristina sees Meredith's name (M. Webber, by the way) on the board next hers for the heart surgery and goes rushing into the on-call room -- where she finds Alex and April kissing. She chuckles and leaves.
Alex tells Cristina that if she says anything to Meredith, he'll make sure she never gets another surgery. Cristina tells Alex to change the board, but he says Callie changed it in the first place.
In surgery, Addison and Derek are having a personal conversation about how he's never home, stays in "that stupid trailer" on his land and planning a house he's never going to build.
Bailey is worried that the veins Ellis is planning to graft aren't suitable. Alex tells Bailey to tell Ellis herself, but Bailey can't bring herself to do it.
Cristina goes to complain to Owen, all the while Avery is trying to get Cristina to give Lexie a pacemaker. Owen gets upset with all the commotion and puts his fist through a window. Cristina helps bandage him up, then leaves for surgery. She says she thought his situation was supposed to be getting better, and he asks her not to tell his wife.
In surgery, Alex tells Ellis he's thinking of having his wedding with Meredith in Hawaii, but Ellis insists on doing it locally and Alex agrees. Ellis then sees the problem with the veins that Bailey was worried about and panics. She asks Alex if he knew about it and he says nothing. She says she wants Bailey in the room immediately.
Cristina and Meredith argue over which approach to take with their shared heart surgery. Meanwhile, Owen tells Avery that someone made off with a bunch of drugs from the hospital and the dispensary was accessed with his ID card. Avery realizes he's missing it and goes to find Lexie, who is gone.
Ellis is upset with Bailey for not having told her about the veins. Alex then nicks the carotid artery while suturing the patient up, and Ellis -- looking up at all the press in the gallery -- says they're trying to kill her.
Addison and Derek argue some more and Addison says she can only hope Derek is more interested in being home when the baby comes. She then asks him if he even wanted a baby with her. She asks him if he loves her, and he can't look her in the eye.
Cristina and Meredith bicker again when something goes wrong in their surgery, and despite Callie telling them to use Meredith's approach, Cristina jumps in and fixes the problem her way.
Ellis goes off on Derek, saying that Addison threatened to quit and that they can't bring their personal business into the hospital. She also tells Derek he's been a disappointment every since he arrived at the hospital and he needs to get it together. He says the residents have a nickname for him and it isn't flattering, but she does say what it is.
Meredith and Cristina fight again in the locker room, with Cristina saying that Callie only took Meredith's side because she's the chief's little girl. Meredith says they'd all be working under Preston Burke, but Cristina "screwed" everyone out of that opportunity. Cristina tells Meredith that since she's getting personal, she should ask what "Prince Charming and the Virgin Mary" do in Alex's office (referring to Alex and April). Alex tries to play it off, but April starts crying and Meredith leaves.
Callie and Arizona rejoice over their patient's progress and decide they should celebrate with a drink. When Callie's kids show up, they decide they'll have that drink "someday."
Meredith is sobbing in Webber's arms. Ellis walks in and tells Meredith she shouldn't have let Cristina show her up in her O.R. Meredith says she shouldn't have been in there because she wasn't prepared, and she only went in because Ellis pushed her. Meredith leaves and Ellis breaks down in Webber's arms next, telling him she wants him fire Bailey because she made her look like an idiot.
Owen finds Cristina and thanks her. Cristina suggests that he tell Callie that he needs help, but he's worried Callie will take the kids away. Callie and the kids show up and when Callie asks what happened to his hand, Owen says a junkie patient pushed him into a tray of instruments.
A man walks into the hospital carrying Lexie, who's unconscious. The man is Sloan.
Lexie's heart beat returns after some work from the doctors. Sloan then asks where Shepherd is, and someone asks him, "Which one?"
Derek, meanwhile, is giving Addison a speech in her office about how he also hopes everything will get better with the baby comes. Addison shakes her head and says, "It's not your baby." Sloan then walks out of a restroom.
Meredith finds Cristina and Avery still trying to revive Lexie. Meredith suggests they crack her chest and try to save her that way (which is the approach Cristina wanted to use in their earlier surgery).
Bailey finds Alex crying in the elevator because he had a chance to be better, but he screwed it up. Bailey tells him she just got fired, but she isn't crying in an elevator.
Meredith and Cristina work together to save Lexie, and we next see them at the bar celebrating. Meredith fumbles through a shot of tequila. Cristina leaves and Meredith finds herself alone at the bar -- for just a moment. Derek is sitting nearby and asks what the nickname is that the residents have for him. She says it's McDreary. He thinks that's apt, and Meredith tries to cheer him up. She says that this night, he doesn't have to be a world-class surgeon, he can just be a guy in a bar -- and he says she's just a girl in a bar. They get more drinks, and, as Voiceover Meredith says that things can work out as if they were just meant to be.

18The Lion Sleeps Tonight
05 Apr 2012Description ▼
Meredith is convincing Derek she's excited about the house -- and they see a wild lion roaming the streets of Seattle while they're on their way into work.
It's been a week since Owen and Christina talked. Teddy is in a support group for widows, and she's laughing while another widow tells a story about how her husband died of congestive heart failure.
Christina doesn't really believe Meredith's story about the lion. Owen isn't paying much attention to her story, either. Meredith says Animal Control shot it with one dart.
Derek can't convince Sloan to pay much attention to the lion story, either. Sloan is considering asking Julia to move in with him. Lexie is in the back of the elevator and overhears this.
Webber and Avery wait for the ambulance to bring in patients from a lion mauling. Avery mocks Webber for trying to get in on it rather than doing a gall bladder operation. A 32-year-old man who was mauled by the lion comes in, and he's worried his girlfriend was eaten by it.
A woman in, also badly injured by the lion, asking about Kirby. Bailey tells her the man is fine, but the injured woman corrects Bailey, saying that Paul is the boyfriend -- Kirby is her lion.
Teddy tells Arizona and Christina about her bad grief group experience. A nurse comes to say goodbye to them, and she asks whether it's OK for her to give Arizona a hug. She holds the hug for a long time.
Alex is taking care of Morgan's baby, Tommy, and he sneaks away to tell Arizona he needs to get off the case because Morgan is "into" him. Arizona lets him off her service.
Bailey explains to Owen and Meredith about the woman keeping the lion as a pet. She wants to save the woman's life, just so she can tell her she's crazy.
Owen asks Meredith to tell Crhstina how sorry he is and that "it was just sex" and he'd take it back if he could. Meredith gets upset and tells Owen she wants to pretend their conversation never happened.
Callie tells Sloan about the nurse, Colleen, and the lingering hug and realizes that she and Arizona must have had a thing. She's also wondering if Arizona has had other flings with other nurses.
Christina and Teddy start working on a stem-cell experiment to grow new hearts. Alex walks in and announces that he's on Teddy's service, and they both get paged to the E.R., leaving Christina alone.
Derek walks Lexie through an aneurysm clipping procedure. She thinks Derek is worried about her doing it, but he says she has to learn. She asks Derek if he's going to suggest to Mark that he move in with Julia, and after she awkwardly stammers for a bit, she and Derek both agree they "don't talk about stuff like this."
April is treating Morgan's baby, and Morgan wants Alex to be paged. April tells a nurse to page Arizona.
Teddy and Alex are treating an elderly man and Alex gets repeated pages. The man and his wife reveal that what might have triggered the heart pain was the excitement over having seen the lion.
Callie asks Arizona about whether she and Colleen were "a thing," and Arizona says they were "a little bit of a thing a very long time ago." Callie asks if there were other exes in the hospital. Arizona doesn't want to have the conversation. Callie asks for "a number" and Arizona says, "1 or 2."
Bailey operates on the injured woman and talks about how she should have gotten a dog instead of a lion as a pet. Owen and Meredith are awkwardly quiet. Bailey asks if she's offended anyone without realizing it, and she asks Owen if he has any exotic pets.
"Christina doesn't believe in pets," he says.
Meredth quickly shoots back, "Christina doesn't believe in a lot of things."
Alex and Teddy tell the wife of the elderly man that he had another heart attack during his surgery. He apologizes to his wife for messing up their Alaskan cruise. They were going to celebrate 50 years together.
Derek tries to prep Lexie for surgery but she's still distracted by the Sloan situation. Derek tells her he needs his resident to focus.
Christina works in the lab while Alex and Avery come in for lunch. Alex talks about how Morgan won't stop paging him. Lexie shows up and says she understands the woman keeping a lion as a pet. Christina asks them to leave.
Arizona and April tell Morgan about her baby's condition, but she's focused on where Alex has gone. Arizona opens up the possibility of allowing natural death for her child. Arizona tells her she should consider what kind of life he'll live. Alex comes around and sees Morgan crying. She tells him about Arizona's comments and he walks away.
Sloan, Callie, Avery and Webber are operating on the man who was mauled by the lion and talking about Arizona's "1 or 2" exes. Webber clears his throat and reminds Callie that when patients say they have "1 or 2" drinks each week, they round that number up because they're likely having many more. Just then, Avery finds a lion tooth and pulls it out of the man's body. Webber wants a nurse to keep it safe.
The elderly man's wife talks with Teddy in the waiting room and asks Teddy to do whatever she can to save her husband. Teddy assures her she's "very good" at her job.
Derek and Lexie operate on their patient and Derek takes over. Lexie steps aside. Derek then says he's not going to tell Sloan what to do. He says Sloan might change his mind to move in with Julia if he thinks there's still a chance with Lexie. But he tells Lexie to make sure she really wants to be with him, not that she just wants him because he's with someone else.
Alex and Teddy are in surgery when a nurse reads Alex a string of texts from Morgan. Teddy tells Alex he's doing the right thing by ignoring her. Alex asks the nurse to turn his pager off.
Hunt tracks down Meredith and she again gets upset with him. She tells him that Christina didn't want her to know about Hunt's affair, and now she does.
Teddy gets through a particularly tricky part of the surgery on her patient, and Alex is impressed she did it.
Sloan warns Arizona that Callie is on a mission to learn more about Arizona's exes. Callie asks Arizona for names. Arizona points out a few women in the cafeteria, and then lists a few more names.
The man who was mauled by the lion talks about how he was trying to live up to the man he hoped he could be by facing his girlfriend's lion. Webber tells the man he's a hero for jumping in front of the lion when its real target was the man's girlfriend.
Teddy and Alex are on their way to tell the elderly woman that her husband is OK when Morgan stops Alex. Morgan wants to know what Alex thinks. He gives her his medical opinion, but she doesn't want that. He gets harsh with her, telling her she has to deal with her own situation without involving him.
Meredith finds Christina in the lab and Christina explains the process of making new hearts from scratch.
Teddy finds the elderly woman in the waiting room unconscious.
Alex sees Morgan sitting next to her baby through a window. Arizona tells Alex they're doing the surgery but Morgan doesn't want Alex involved. Arizona says Tommy is going need "a really tough mom," and if hating Alex helps make her tough that's alright.
Paul, the lion victim, gets moved in next to his girlfriend Naomi and she blames him for the fact that her lion is now gone.
Sloan finds Callie looking at a board of doctors in dermatology, saying she's trying to figure out how many other people Arizona's likely hooked up with. Sloan reminds Callie that Arizona wakes up every morning and sees Sloan holding the baby that he and Callie made together. Callie realizes that "can't be easy" for Arizona, and Sloan insists it must be killing Arizona to know that Callie was "with the golden boy of this hospital."
Teddy's patient thanks her for the successful surgery, and that he has the heart of a 50-year-old. He asks for his wife, and Teddy tells him that she went to find his wife in the waiting room and she was unconscious. She was pronounced dead just minutes earlier. He cries and holds Teddy's hand.
Bailey gives Owen a little pep talk, telling him that while he did a terrible thing, he's not a terrible person.
Teddy cries as she looks at herself in the mirror and declares, "I am a widow" repeatedly.
Lexie and Sloan end up in the same elevator that night. They nearly walk together to the parking lot, but Lexie decides to stay late to do more work.
Webber shows Avery his massive collection of the items that have been removed from patients. He's stored them all in jars. He tells Avery they sometimes get geniuses on their surgical tables and they sometimes get idiots.
"I, for one, am partial to the idiots," Webber says as he drops the lion's tooth into a new jar. "You don't get a lion's tooth from a genius."
Callie gets home that night and proceeds to use her "fight" with Arizona as a primer for sex.
Meredith gets home and tells Derek that if he ever cheats on her, she'll kill him. She makes him promise he'll never cheat on her, and he does. He asks if she wants to talk about it and she says no.
Owen gets home and he and Christina sit in silence at their dinner table. Suddenly, she splashes her bowl of cereal in his face.
12 Apr 2012Description ▼
We open with a montage of Owen and Cristina's relationship -- from the romantic beginning to the cereal-to-Owen's-face moment last week. It's gotten complicated.
We next see Owen and a woman drinking at the bar. He's about to leave and she tries to talk him into another. We next see that Owen is actually recounting the story to Cristina, who wants details. He doesn't understand how it's helping, but says he wants to "fix this." He doesn't want to "torture" her with the details of him having sex with another woman. She insists on knowing every detail.
Callie is grilling Meredith with more scenarios for her boards. Callie thinks Meredith is ready.
Meredith is making out with Derek during what's normally her griping time with Cristina. He wants to know what's wrong, and Meredith says nothing is wrong. They get paged.
Sloan walks in "as chief," having improved the pastry quality already. He says he's filling in while Owen and Cristina are "down with the flu." Bailey questions whether Hunt requested Sloan by name, and Sloan claims he did.
Teddy is excited about planning with Callie and Arizona to go to a new restaurant for "ladies' night." After Teddy leaves, Arizona urges Callie to include more ladies, so Callie asks Bailey, who doesn't want to go. Bailey agrees to go, as long as Callie and Arizona are buying.
Webber tells a patent they found a donor for a multi-organ transplant of the small and large intestines, stomach, pancreas and liver. The surgery is happening that day. The patient, Neil, isn't optimistic. Meredith offers to call his family, but he has told them not to bother.
April, Alex and Avery are frantically going through flash cards for the boards and they're struggling through them. Meredith gives them the right answer, because the Torres method is in her. Alex mentions that Cristina is the one who's in real trouble, and Meredith jumps to her defense.
Back at their apartment, Owen insists he is not going to go through all the details of his cheating. Cristina tells him he'll have to leave. She answers the phone because it's Meredith, who will come over if Cristina doesn't answer. Cristina tells Meredith that she and Owen have the flu, and quickly gets off the phone. After Cristina hangs up, she tells Owen it's up to him whether he stays or goes. He stays, and proceeds recounting the story of his cheating -- saying it was the day they ended therapy.
We see the flashback of the day they ended therapy and shouted at each other about being each other's "person." The woman came in with an emergency patient. Cristina asks the woman's name and Owen doesn't remember.
Sloan, who's really getting into this chief thing, comes in to check on a patient whose jaw is fused, as well as some of his vertebrae. Sloan says he'll be "eating burgers again real soon" after putting in a new titanium jaw Sloan made for him. Derek pulls Sloan outside and says they shouldn't do the surgery because of the dangers posed by his vertebrae. Sloan insists they need to do this quickly, but Derek doesn't think there's anything he can do by 3 o'clock, the time of the scheduled surgery. Sloan tells Derek to "rise" to the challenge.
A clerk catches Alex trying to take patient charts out of the files to copy them. She says the charts don't leave the room. Alex has an idea. He asks Lexie to memorize them all with her photographic memory. Lexie thinks it will take forever. April reminds Lexie that she and Alex will be residents next year, making recommendations for chief resident, and she warns Lexie that she doesn't want to get off on the wrong foot.
Bailey talks to Ben about ladies' night, and he tells her he had plans for the two of them to do things that wouldn't be appropriate to talk about at work, because they've been on different schedules for a while. Bailey says she'll get out of girls' night.
Sloan sees the scans of the donor for the multi-organ transplant. They find what looks like a tumor on the liver. Webber and Bailey think they should operate to remove the tumor, which could be benign, from the donor before the transplant. Sloan thinks it's a bad idea, and, in a tense and dramatic moment, refuses to allow it.
Webber tells his patient that they've put him back on the transplant list. Neil thinks there's no chance he'll make it until the next day. He says, "Thank God my family's not around for this -- it's like Lucy with the football, except it's my life." Neil tells Webber not to beat himself up about it. "It's done, it's over, you did everything you could," Neil says. Webber decides he didn't. He tells Bailey the idea to remove the liver tumor was a good one, and says he'll "deal with Chief Sloan."
Sloan, meanwhile, is at lunch with Avery telling him that being chief is about making the hard decisions. Derek shows up and presents an option for the surgery -- to stabilize the patient's neck with foam. Sloan thinks it's a decent idea, but tells Derek he "can do better," because the foam isn't flexible enough if something goes wrong in surgery. He tells Derek, again, to "rise." Derek leaves.
Bailey tells Arizona and Callie she has a dance lesson with Ben.
Alex, April, Avery and even Meredith -- on Cristina's behalf -- are dropping charts on Lexie, and she seems a little maxed out.
Back to Owen's story, he and the unnamed woman leave the bar. She thanks him for saving her friend's life, and he says it's just his job. She asks him to kiss her. He says he's drunk and married, and she tells him to kiss her anywhere. He tells her she's trouble, and she tells him to kiss her anyway. Cristina is bawling at this point. Owen tries to hold her, and she gets up to walk to the bathroom and slams the door shut.
At day care, Derek tells Meredith she has to "fix this thing with Cristina and Hunt" because Sloan as chief is driving him crazy. Meredith says she can't, and tells Derek that Owen cheated on Cristina. Meredith says she can't talk about it with Cristina, because Cristina doesn't really know she knows. Derek hopes they figure it out -- at least partly because Sloan is driving him crazy. Derek gets up and plants Zola onto a beanbag chair, then says Sloan has a good point about stabilizing the patient's vertebrae with foam.
Sloan asks Arizona to take Sophia for the night because he has "chief stuff to do." Arizona tells him about ladies' night, but he says they owe him for Valentine's Day. Standing in front of the surgery board, Sloan asks April how long it takes to do an appendectomy. After some boards-related stammering, she says about 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes. He then wonders why Bailey and Meredith have eight hours books in an O.R. She says nothing, but Sloan presses her and all she can say is, "Dr. Webber was the chief for a very long time."
We next see Sloan burst into the O.R. demanding they not touch the patient. Bailey asks him to let them do their jobs. He tells her that as the chief of surgery, he told them not to do the surgery, so "do not touch him." Sloan goes back into the other O.R., where Webber is removing the tumor from the donor liver, and asks if he wasn't clear earlier when he said the organs would be compromised because of the tumor. Webber gives Sloan a great, wise speech about how Sloan is a great surgeon and may one day make a great chief of surgery, but being a plastic surgeon he's a "perfectionist" who is trying to go by the book. Webber admits the transplant he's proposing "won't be pretty, but it will work" and that's all he needs. He warns Sloan to "stand down" and Sloan leaves the room, saying nothing else.
Back at the apartment, Owen begs Cristina to open the door. He starts to worry that she's hurting herself because she's not responding. He says he's going to kick open the door and tells her to get away from it because he's coming in. She opens it just as he collides with the door and he goes flying through the bathroom onto the floor, which makes Cristina laugh. Owen chuckles a bit and Cristina keeps laughing, more and more maniacally. She then starts listing off her degrees and says she's supposed to be studying for her boards, but she's "locked in a bathroom crying because of a boy." She finally stops laughing and goes completely silent.
Owen and Cristina are now laying in bed next to each other. Cristina says she thinks it would have been easier if he's fallen in love with someone else because he would have simply left Cristina for the other woman. He says it would not have been easier. She asks if it was "just sex," and he says it was just sex -- "just once." She says she doesn't understand why he'd do it. He says he was lonely because they were fighting, and he got drunk and did "an incredibly stupid thing." He says people make mistakes, and tells her, "You make mistakes." She thinks he's bringing up the abortion again. He says he had sex with somebody because he was hurt, and she tells him he wanted to hurt her back. Owen says nothing.
Arizona tells Callie that Sloan can't keep Sophia, and they decide to ditch Teddy, perhaps to do some "salsa dancing" -- a reference to Bailey's "dance lessons" with Ben.
Webber, Bailey and Meredith work on Neil's transplant.
Derek shows Sloan how he's using a beanbag (from the day care inspiration) to support his patient's spine. Sloan decides he's a great leader because he encouraged Derek to "rise" and he rose.
Arizona talks to Teddy about ladies' night, and Teddy worries when she'll stop freaking people out. She doesn't mean to be the sad widow and ruin everybody's fun. Arizona feels bad and goes to talk to Callie and Bailey about how bad and selfish they are for trying to avoid Teddy. Arizona demands they they all go, "no excuses."
Lexie is numb, telling Meredith she read too much and she's worried stuff is "falling out" of her brain.
Owen has a bag packed and tells Cristina he'll come back to get the rest of his stuff another time. He tells her she was the love of his life and he'll never love another woman. Cristina, stone-faced, shoots back, "You don't even remember her name." Owen tells her to take care of herself and leaves.
Neil wakes up after his surgery and sees Meredith. He asks Meredith if he's alive, and she says she's afraid so. He asks where everybody is, and she reminds him he told them not to call and not to visit. He can't believe they didn't come. Meredith says they should call them.
Arizona and Callie have Bailey at their apartment, waiting for Teddy to arrive. Bailey wants one drink before getting on her way, saying she told Ben she'd be gone in 45 minutes. Teddy arrives with several bottles of wine and "movies -- 'Dirty Dancing' and 'Beaches.'" Bailey smiles along, but is totally annoyed.
Meredith calls Cristina and asks if she's feeling better. Cristina says she is, but then starts to cry. Meredith tells Cristina that while she knows Cristina doesn't want to talk about it, she just wants to stay on the phone with her until Cristina wants to hang up. Cristina nods, then cries a little more before hanging up.
Derek finds Owen hitting golf balls on the roof. Derek asks Owen if he's feeling better and, after first not knowing what Derek meant (about the flu), Owen says he's fine. Derek says Sloan turned out to be a good chief, which surprises Owen because he'd asked for Webber or Derek to fill in.
Meredith has Avery, April and Alex for an early-morning study session. She's now teaching "The Grey Method." There's a ring at the doorbell, and it's Cristina. She says she's going to fail her boards if she doesn't study, and Meredith welcomes her inside.

17 May 2012Description ▼
It's George! The opening of the season finale, amid scenes and screams from the plane crash in which six doctors' lives are in peril, flashes back to the series premiere when then-chief Dr. Webber welcomes the interns to Seattle Grace. Cut back to Meredith looking half-conscious and staring up at the trees. Cristina pulls Meredith up and there's still a lot of screaming in the background. Meredith pulls a piece of shrapnel out of her leg. Cristina has lost a shoe. Meredith calls out for Derek, and Cristina says Derek was sucked out the side of the plane when it hit the trees. We see it's Arizona who's screaming and Cristina yells at her to shut up. Then there's a persistent banging sound. Sloan joins Cristina and Meredith looking for the sound and they see Lexie -- only her arm -- banging a seat belt against the metal side of the plane. Arizona rips her pant leg and sees a massive wound. The pilot is stuck in the cockpit. Arizona, in shock, laughs about the fact that she's married to an orthopedic surgeon and she's staring at her leg bone. The pilot tells her he can't feel his legs.
Sloan finds Lexie trapped under a piece of the plane. She's short of breath. Cristina's shoulder is separated and she asks Sloan to pop it back in. He does, and the sound seems to echo through the trees.
Meredith goes off shouting Derek's name and he hears her. But she can't hear his response. His arm is also stuck under a piece of the plane. He reaches for a big rock with his free hand and whacks at the trapped hand, letting out a scream.
Back at the hospital, Hunt wants to find Teddy. He tells his assistant to send all calls to voice mail unless someone's dying or it's Cristina. There's a big trauma coming in: A building collapsed on firefighter recruits on their last day of training. Webber tells Hunt about taking a group of the residents to dinner. Hunt's not interested. Webber says it's a great time and not to be missed, meanwhile April, Avery and Alex are wishing they didn't have to go. Alex says Cristina and Meredith "skipped town at the perfect time." Avery tells Alex he's still weighing his options while deciding whether or not to go to Tulane. April says she's going to work at a Tasty Freeze back home, but Avery tries to remind her she's "still a doctor."
Ben is trying to sell Bailey on a "commuter marriage." She's not into it. Callie hears about it and says the long-distance thing is not the worst thing in the world. Callie says Arizona's only been gone a day and she's missing her already.
Back at the crash scene, Sloan and Cristina are trying to lift the plane off Lexie. A shaken Lexie tells Cristina her legs and pelvis are crushed, she can't feel her other arm and isn't sure it's still there, and her chest feels like he's going to explode, "so it's probably a massive hemothorax." Sloan tells Cristina to go get a bunch of supplies and Cristina pauses. Lexie tells Sloan that Cristina "knows it won't help." He tells Lexie she's going to be fine. Cristina tearfully tells Lexie she'll be right back.
Hunt finds Teddy and asks her about a job she's apparently weighing. She tells Hunt she's not taking it.
At the crash scene, Cristina tapes the pilot's head to the back of his seat to stabilize his neck. He worries about whether he's paralyzed and won't be able to walk again. Cristina stabs his leg with a pen and when he doesn't react she tells him, "I'm sorry."
Meredith tells Cristina she can't find Derek. Cristina tells Meredith she should come help Lexie. Meanwhile, Lexie tells Sloan she's dying. She asks him to tell Meredith she loves her and "that she was a good sister." She asks Sloan to hold her hand. He refuses, insisting she's "not dying." He tries again in vain to lift the piece of the plane off of her. He tells her he loves her, and she says he doesn't have to say that. He starts to lay out their whole life together. They're going to get married and a couple of kids. She smiles at this and he tells her they're going to be so happy, so she can't die. He tells her they're "meant to be." She says it back and then she's gone.
Meredith is crying uncontrollably while Sloan and Cristina sit by in silence.
At the hospital, Alex complains to Callie about Arizona holding it against him that he's going to Hopkins. He decides to call Arizona, and Callie says no good will come out of it. There's no answer.
Hunt wants to know why Teddy turned down a job at Med-Comm (Army Medical Command). He questions her loyalty and why she isn't responding to the call to serve her country. She tells him she's love to leave Seattle Grace and never look back, given all the memories of Henry around the hospital, but she's not going to leave because Hunt is as shaken and broken as she's ever seen him. She says that after all the kindness and friendship he's shown her.
Cristina and Meredith are still looking for Derek with no luck. Cristina says that if they make it through this she's "leaving Seattle Grace Mercy Death and never looking back." Cristina tries to calm Meredith down. Meredith tells Cristina, "You're still my person, even if I'm not yours." Meredith starts to cry and Derek stumbles out from behind a tree, holding his left wrist. He breathlessly says, "I heard your voice, I thought I was dreaming." Then he collapses.
Cristina finds her shoe. Meredith is treating a massive wound on Derek's left arm. He asks where Lexie is, and Meredith's silent response says everything. Derek walks Meredith through the process of closing the wound. She's going to weave the pin through the flesh and Derek asks for a T-shirt to put in his mouth because he's going to scream a lot and probably pass out. Meredith starts, Derek screams and she begs him to pass out.
At the hospital, Webber is "jazzed" about the dinner and asks Avery, Alex and April if they're excited. They all go through the motions of telling him they are. After he leaves, Alex offers anyone $10 to stab him in the face.
Hunt talks to Teddy and tells her he realizes that if Cristina were staying, Teddy would probably take the job. He tries to convince Teddy he'll be fine, but she says he won't. He says she's not even gone and he misses her already.
Sloan is frozen, still holding Lexie's hand, and Cristina is insisting that he get up and help. He's not moving, and Cristina goes over to him and finds he's actually unconscious. She checks for a pulse, rips open Sloan's shirt and is stunned by what she finds.
At the hospital, Teddy and Hunt are checking a patient who appears to have a cardiac tamponade -- a compression of the heart that's a result of blood or build building up between the heart muscle and the pericardium. At the scene of the crash, Cristina thinks Sloan has the same thing. She's only about 70 percent sure, it's the best she can do without an ultrasound. With the scenes alternating between Teddy working on the patient with all the necessary tools in the hospital and Cristina, Meredith and Derek doing it with random implements in the woods, they both work. The only difference is that afterward, Teddy asks Hunt if he wants to grab lunch. Cristina and the others are still trying to survive.
Callie finds Alex, Avery and April eating junk food and asks about their "sense of occasion" and why they don't want to go to the chief's dinner. She mocks April for being sad about failing her boards, and tells them about all the terrible things that have happened to her. Now, she says, she's pretty darn happy. And, she says, the duck is freakin' amazing.
In the woods, the group gathers back around Arizona and she asks where Lexie is. Sloan tells her Lexie's dead. They suggest starting a fire. Jerry, the pilot, hears a helicopter and they all try unsuccessfully to shoot the flare gun into the air, but it doesn't work.
Getting ready for dinner, Avery tells April he chose Tulane. She says that's good for him, but he says he feels sick to leave Seattle and leave April. She goes off about how she's not happy and doesn't know who she is anymore. She says she's going to try -- for one night -- to be happy. He tells her she looks really nice and they leave together.
Alex calls Arizona and leaves a message, saying that the only reason Hopkins wants him is because she made him something. "I guess I'm saying thanks, or whatever," he says.
Night falls in the woods and Jerry worries that they won't be found anytime soon. Sloan tells Arizona that he should have told Lexie earlier that he loved her. Sloan seems to be fading and Arizona tells him to hang on. He says Lexie's waiting for him.
Hunt calls Teddy in for a meeting and she insists she's going to stay. He tells her she's fired, effective immediately. He tells her she has other opportunities and should take them. He tells her he doesn't want her there anymore. He says she's been insubordinate in front of staff and students. She says they're "passed all that," and he says they are because she's fired. He tells her pack her stuff. She storms out of the room calling him a "son of a bitch." Seconds later, she comes back in crying and they hug. Teddy tells him to fight for Cristina. He tells her to go and "be great."
Bailey finds Ben and gives him a lecture about making decisions together and not making decisions on his own. He tells her he is "not a free agent anymore." He asks if this means they're still getting married. She says she thinks she's made it clear. They kiss.
Hunt is finally checking his messages. There are several messages from the hospital in Boise, wondering when the Seattle Grace doctors were supposed to arrive there.
At the chief's dinner, they're about to toast and Webber is ready to give his big speech, but decides to wait until Meredith and Cristina show up.
Hunt hears one last message from Boise, with the doctor there saying she's starting to get worried. Hunt looks concerned.
In the woods, Cristina and Meredith are hungry and everyone else is sleeping despite Cristina's pleas that everyone stay conscious. Meredith goes to light the last match they have and it goes out immediately.

2Remember the Time
04 Oct 2012Description ▼
We're back at and after the scene of the plane crash. Meredith is at a hospital being treated for her injuries. She's panicking, having flashbacks of the crash and saying she has to get on a plane, and having to see her sister. Webber and Bailey show up, and Zola gets a chance to see her mom. Meredith finds Cristina, who is in another hospital room. They're afraid to fly again, but they have to get home. Meredith asked Bailey to sedate them for the flight and they'll never know it happened.
On the bumpy flight back to Seattle, Bailey tells Webber she should have been knocked out, too. She tells him she keeps thinking they're going to crash and end up on a tropical island and be attacked by a polar bear. He tells her he doesn't know what she means. She tells him to watch more TV.
Some time after the crash, Derek's hand was injured but he still wanted Meredith to go to Harvard.
In another moment in time, Cristina is frozen, laying in her bed. She's silent. Alex tells Meredith it's bold to blow off Harvard. She tells him it's bold to blow of Johns Hopkins. Sloan is apparently still alive and Arizona's leg is still being treated she hasn't yet lost her leg. Meredith says they're all going to be fine. April is there, too.
We see another point in time when Cristina is restrained in that hospital bed, having just shattered the window to her room. SHe's about to be sent to psych ward when Meredith gets a moment alone with her and begs her to say something.
We see when Derek first arrived for his surgery, a little groggy. He sees the X-ray and the break looks bad. Callie and another surgeon tell him the plan for repairing his hand and nerves. The second surgeon says, conservatively, he can get him back to 80 percent function. Later, Derek tells Meredith his days as a surgeon might be over, but he's fortunate to be alive and they have a great life.
We see Derek again, in a different time, advising another brain surgeon about removing a tumor. He talks about having a class to teach and his hand is in a brace. Derek's advice, Hunt tells the other surgeon, is "why we keep him around." After the other surgeon leaves, Hunt tells Derek he's "invaluable." Derek observes from the gallery, and when something goes wrong, he goes in to help out, calling out orders but not getting involved otherwise. A frustrated Derek goes and vents to Sloan, who is alive and not in a coma. Derek tells Sloan he's glad to see him doing better. Sloan tells Derek he'll be better, too.
Callie tells Derek about her plan, which is different from the other surgeon's. Hers is riskier, but she thinks she can get Derek back to 100 percent. Derek tells Callie he wants her to do the surgery. She's worried, but does it. She's taking a nerve graft from elsewhere. It all looks "perfect," she says. When she's almost done, Alex comes in and tells Callie there's a problem with Arizona.
Flashing back to when Cristina was first brought back to the hospital, she's violently aggressive when she's not restrained. Hunt goes to see her and as soon as he takes her restraints off, she starts to fight and he holds her close. She calms down a little, but still says nothing and her eyes are locked.
We next see Cristina's perspective of the conversation Meredith, Alex and April were having. Afterward, we see some interns outside Cristina's hospital room window gossiping about her condition. She has her back turned to the window when one of them says Cristina "used to be a legend" around the hospital, and another one says, "and now she's like an end table." At that moment, Cristina grabs a vase and flings it toward the window, cracking it.
We see Hunt giving Cristina a sponge bath, telling her he's going to take a leave of absence and will help her as long as she needs it. He says she'll be back in no time. He tells Cristina it's time to get out of the tub and she says she can't. She starts talking, telling him how she stayed awake for four days. She tells him she remembers every minute of it. She remembers getting bugs out of Arizona's leg, putting leaves on it to try to keep them out. She remembers Sloan trying to die while she tried to keep him alive. She remembers everyone was asleep. Arizona got the last of the water, she says, and then she had to drink her own pee. She remembered noises of animals growling nearby. Then she realized they were fighting over Lexie.
"I tried to keep them off of her," she says. "I tried. But I couldn't get out. I can't get out."
She then starts repeating, "I can't get out. Don't you see? I'll never get out"
We next see Cristina packing her car on her way to Minnesota. Meredith asks if she's sure about this, and suggests Cristina is fleeing. Cristina doesn't deny this, saying that everyone should leave Seattle because horrible things happen there. Meredith tells her this is life. They make some references to being each other's "person," but Meredith tells Cristina she's not Cristina's person anymore. She tells Cristina she's always been her own person, and she should just go. She does.
Sloan is the next one we see, and even the doctors trying to revive him say he's "trying to die." Back at the hospital, Sloan's girlfriend arrives and tells him she's there for him, but he tells her he loves, or loved, Lexie. "I'm sorry," she says.
We next see Callie sitting next to Sloan's bed. Derek comes and tells her to go get some rest because she's been going back and forth between Sloan and Arizona's rooms. She's afraid he's giving up. Derek tells her he'll take care of him. Sloan suddenly seems great. He's smiling, laughing and making inappropriate jokes, so everyone's happy. Callie goes in to talk to him, but Webber tells Derek, Avery and a nurse that he's worried Sloan is having a "surge." It's one last burst of energy that many terminally ill patients get. Webber says Sloan will soon have epiphanies and tell you what really matters in life.
After this, we see Sloan giving some deep medical and personal advice to Avery. THe young surgeon listens, but looks worried. He asks Avery to bring Sophia to see he can see her. Avery leaves. Sloan breathes deeply and Webber sees him. Sloan struggles for breath and asks Webber if it's what he thinks it is.
Avery is on his way to get Sophia when April tells him she's leaving to go back home. She wanted to wait for Sloan to get better and now he's better. Avery can't stop and talk it over, but asks April to go wait at the bar for her so they can talk. She says she will. Meanwhile, Webber is making Sloan more comfortable and telling Webber not to bother Derek and Callie.
Arizona has a serious infection in her leg and a doctor at the first hospital recommends amputation. Arizona wants to see her scans and when she does she withdraws consent for any doctor to cut off her leg, "especially not some yahoo in Dumptruck, Idaho," she says. She just wants to go home and see Callie.
We see Arizona back in Seattle, where Callie is sitting with her. Alex comes and talks to Arizona and tells her he feels like crap. He says he should've been on that plane. She tells him she's had that thought a lot, too. She tells him she's not proud of it. She says she was only on that plane because Alex was too selfish to go. She says she thought to herself that no matter how hard she tried to make Alex better, "he's still a horrible person." She says she's still trying to figure why this would happen to someone like her instead of someone like him.
"So I guess I'm still a little pissed off," she tells him, before asking him to get out of her room.
In another room, Arizona is kissing Sophia goodbye. Bailey takes the girl away when Callie comes in. Arizona is getting emotional, thinking about her life without a leg if it has to get cut off. She asks Callie to promise she won't let anyone take her leg. Callie promises.
Later, Callie and Hunt are shouting at each other about whether Arizona's leg can actually be saved. Callie says she's risking Arizona's leg. Hunt tells Callie she's too emotional because Arizona is her wife, but Callie says she's not. She says Arizona is just a shell of who she was, and she asks Hunt if it was the same with Cristina. She asks Hunt to get on board with the plan. He tells Callie he doesn't think he's going to get Cristina back.
Next, Callie is checking up on Arizona the day before her surgery. Her spirits are up and she's vowing to be a great patient.
Alex brings Arizona a piece of pizza and tells her he's going to Hopkins. He says he's been busting his ass to make sure things have gone smoothly and now he's done. He leaves the slice, then says, "I'm sorry this happened to you, and I'm sorry it made you hate me." She says nothing, then starts crashing.
This is when Alex reports to Callie that something's wrong with Arizona. He says she's deteriorating. Callie is shaken and realizes it's the leg. After some tense, quiet moments, she tells Alex, "Cut it off."
Callie tells Alex to go do it, and do a good job. "Do your best," she tells him.
Meredith comes into the O.R., where Callie is still operating on Derek, and asks if there's anything she can do. Callie assures Meredith she's OK, and continues with the surgery.
Webber is walking through the instructions with Sloan about how long he'd want life-sustaining care. We see when Sloan made the decision to cut off life support if there are no signs of improvement within 30 days.
Meredith is watching Derek's surgery from the gallery and calls Cristina. There's no answer, so Meredith leaves a message telling Cristina she was right about "all of it."
Webber sits next to Sloan and watches him slowly slip into a coma. Avery comes in with Sophia, who is crying.
We see Alex make the first incision as he prepares to cut Arizona's leg off. We see April on a plane while Avery gets to the bar and is looking for her. She isn't there.
Derek wakes up from his surgery and moves his hand a little. We see Cristina listening to Meredith's long message about how she's going to choose to look at Seattle as a place where she's lived as much as she's survived. Cristina calls Meredith back and tells her she's her person, and will always be her person.

8Love Turns You Upside Down
06 Dec 2012Description ▼
Voiceover Meredith tells us about how interns think the hospital is a magical place. She and Cristina watch the interns in their locker room looking all happy. Meredith says, "I can't believe we used to be them." The interns are just a little weirded out by this but keep getting ready for the day. They talk about who they're working with, and they call April "the dud," except for Shane, who defends her. Cristina's intern presents their patient, a 3-month-old baby named Samantha who needs a heart transplant. Her mother has waited 77 days. A man who eagerly listens, and we're all meant to assume is the baby's father, is actually the father of another baby who is at the hospital. They're supporting each other through this. The father's son is named Reese and Cristina tells her she won't need to stay at the hospital to wait for her heart. Alex asks his intern, Jo, to help get a boy to have a bowel movement. He gives her a bunch of latex gloves, and suggests she take off the fancy watch he's noticed she's wearing (which she says was a gift, but not from "daddy"). Kepner is short with Shane, who is excited about outpatient surgery day. She tells him it's a day full of cutting out "glorified pimples" and something a farm hand could do. Cristina gets another patient, Mrs. Crossley, who is getting a pacemaker installed. Barring any complications, she'll go home that day. Her husband is deaf in one ear and talks loudly. Her interns compete to butter Cristina up, and she decides that Edwards will be scrubbing in. A hunter comes into the hospital asking for help, saying he and his friend think they've shot "Bigfoot." A man in the back of a truck screams in pain. He's covered in a bunch of shrubbery. Meanwhile, inside, Jo is pulled into a room where a 15-year-old girl is suddenly delivering a baby that is suffering with a condition that makes it difficult for the baby to breathe. Jo is shaken and doesn't know what to do when a nurse hands her the newborn, which is not breathing. Jo decides to intubate while the mother of the 15-year-old yells for updates on how things are going. A nurse walks Jo through what she should be doing. "Bigfoot" turns out to be just a guy who was out hunting in an Army-issued "gilley suit." The other hunters are upset with him for not wearing the standard orange vest. Jackson comes in to report to Callie that he's having trouble finding a nerve long enough to replace the one Derek needs in his hand. Meredith asks her intern, Heather, to call all of Derek's sisters and ask them to donate a nerve. The first one who says yes gets to do it. Callie says Derek made it clear he wanted a cadaver nerve, but Meredith insists and Heather, who'd rather be helping with the patient, leaves. Jo updates Alex on their newborn patient, and he explains what they'll do next. Shane is grossed out by stuff April pulls out of their first patient. She reassures the patient, then takes Shane into the hall to remind him to be mindful of every patient. She also tells him she knows the interns call her "the dud," and that he might think this is beneath him, but each patient matters. Cristina's baby patient, Reese, has an issue and "Perky," the other intern, is going to scrub in. She rubs it in "Grumpy's" face. Derek comes into Meredith's O.R. upset that his sisters have been called about donating a nerve for him. He tells Heather, the intern, to undo what she's done. He leaves and Meredith tells her "don't undo a thing." Alex and Jo work on their tiny patient, who is crashing. Arizona comes in to help, but Alex and Jo handle it together. Relieved, Alex tells Jo that the baby needs to be monitored day and night. He tells her to get a power nap and calls her "princess." She asks him why he keeps calling her that, and he responds, "Have you seen yourself?" Shane pulls back the robe on his next patient, an elderly woman. She has a scab on her behind that makes him nearly vomit. The interns hang out behind the hospital and talks about how things are going. Jo asks if she's "prissy," and the others seem to think she is. Heather gets a page and runs to help with "Bigfoot." When she gets there, she's not needed to help and she's reminded that she answered Meredith's phone. Heather then engages in answering a series of phone calls on both Meredith's phone and her own, from Derek's sisters responding to the request for a nerve donation and also checking in on holiday travel plans. The final call Heather answers is from a doctor asking if Meredith wants to confirm her ultrasound. Meredith casually tells her, "Hang up. Now." Callie notices. Edwards is with the two babies' parents when she gets a call for Cristina. She runs to report the news to Cristina while the two parents of the two babies wonder what's going on. The man, Noah, tells the woman he can't imagine life without her. His wife died during the delivery of his baby. The two parents hold hands as Edwards comes back to report the latest development. She tells the man that his son, Reese, has gotten worse and that there is a heart available. If it is viable, it will go to Reese, not Samantha. Their hands separate. Leah comes to Edwards and warns her not to even try to get in on the transplant. Edwards doesn't want to be competitive about it. Edwards is a little emotional after feeling like she'd just stolen Samantha's heart away from her mother. Cristina decides to let Edwards scrub in to help cheer her up. After Cristina leaves, Leah mocks Edwards for using her emotions to get in on the surgery. The 15-year-old mom is more concerned with making it to a friend's party than seeing her baby. Jo is quietly shocked. April tells Shane to make sure he passes his boards or else he'll be stuck "on lumps and bumps" like her. She tells him not to judge her and makes him go away. Heather congratulates Meredith, who tells her to forget she ever heard anything about an 8-week ultrasound and she should "never mention any of this to anyone, ever." Edwards helps on the transplant while Leah watches from the gallery, thinking she should be the one in there helping. Alex and Jo sit next to the baby. Jo is annoyed that the young mom didn't even want to see her baby. Alex tells her that not everyone has it as easy as she does. She starts mocking Alex, exaggerating how super-rich her upbringing has been. Noah, the father of Reese, goes over to Samantha's mother and she tells him she can keep sitting there watching her daughter die. "It was her heart," she tells Noah. She says she wants to be happy for him, but she can't. The interns are walking around the hospital that night griping about their jobs, while Shane tries to cheer them up by reminding them they're finally getting to do things instead of just being med students. Just then, Mrs. Crossley's husband calls for help while standing in the hallway holding his wife upside down. He says that if he puts her down "she goes out." He proves this by doing it momentarily. Then he lifts her by her ankles again and she comes back to life. The interns are amazed, but Mr. Crossley tells them to "go get the real doctors." Cristina checks on Mrs. Crossley, who is laying on a bed that's inclined in reverse so she's upside down, and says the pacemaker fell out of place. They'll need to open her up again and reposition it. All the interns' pagers go off and Callie has them rounded up to offer them a chance at the coolest procedure they'll ever be a part of. They bring Derek in and have each of the interns examine him before moving on to the "skills lab portion of the contest." Jo and Edwards are eliminated quickly. Ross goes up, asks the right questions and reassures Derek using the lessons learned by working with April and tells him that he and Callie and Jackson are going to take good care of him. Callie declares Ross the winner, saying he was the only one who treated the patient like a patient. Leah and Edwards suddenly race to get the edge on Mrs. Crossley's surgery and they make some kind of mistake getting her prepped that Edwards realizes could have killed the woman. Cristina walks in and Mrs. Crossley tells her the interns were trying to kill her. The 15-year-old mother and her mother are waiting for the elevator when Jo sees them. The young mother says she's not coming back because her baby is "all messed up." Jo physically tries to stop them from leaving, then she pins the older mother against the wall. Alex walks up and restrains Jo, telling her to let them go. Alex finds Jo outside and tells her she can't assault patients. He calls her princess again and she finally yells at him to stop calling her that. She tells him that her mother left her at a fire station when she was two weeks old. She was bumped around foster homes until she was 16. She then moved out and started living in her car. Her teacher, Miss Schmidt, let her wash her clothes at the school. She says she worked her ass off to do well in school and when she graduated, she didn't have a big, rich family there to celebrate. She had one person: Miss Schmidt, who gave her the watch. Miss Schmidt's son works for the company that makes it. Alex says it is a nice watch. Leah and Edwards get yelled at by Cristina, and Hunt tells them they're banned from the O.R. until further notice. Ross comes back to work with April, who is skeptical about why he's there. She says no one slums it down in "lumps and bumps" when they don't have to. He tells her he's getting in on Derek's surgery because of her. She gave him 27 solo procedures the day before at least one of which saved someone's life. Edwards goes to say goodbye to Samantha's mother, who goes over to Noah and tells him she's happy for him. He's worried his son could still reject the donor heart, and she tells him he won't, and pats his shoulder. Derek and Meredith argue about why Heather was calling Derek's sisters. Derek spots Heather and asks her whether she shut that whole thing down. Meredith tells Heather not to say anything, and Heather finally let's it all out. She tells Meredith she put her in a bad positions and she was more involved in their lives than she thought she should be. She tells Derek that his sisters told her stories about him and Meredith that she didn't really want to know. She's saying all this when Lizzie, Derek's sister, walks in and guesses that Heather's parents were divorced and always put her in the middle. Lizzie tells Meredith she'd better have some baby pictures for her to see because she didn't take the red-eye just so her brother could hack her arms into hamburger meat. At the end of the day, the interns watch all the action at the hospital unfold. Jo watches the residents do their heroic work and says aloud, "I can't believe they used to be us."

13 Dec 2012Description ▼
Bailey warns April about a patient named Mr. Linzer, who will pretend to be fine because he wants to leave the hospital. April first suggests she's going to let her intern watch him and another patient, Mrs. Gelman, but Bailey bristles at this. April assures her she'll watch the patients herself. Bailey is headed out for her honeymoon. Alex introduces his intern, Jo, to Leftkowitz a young boy who has gastroparisis, which means he can't really digest his food. Alex assures the kid and his parents that he's "got a crack team" taking care of him. Bailey doesn't like Callie's teasing humming of "Here's Comes the Bride." Bailey tells Callie that when she and Arizona get to the wedding they should not sit down and stand at the front. Callie realizes that Bailey was trying to say without saying it that she wants them to be her bridesmaids. Jackson is explaining to Derek's sister, Lizzy, the process of her nerve transplant surgery. Derek wants to make absolutely sure that she's OK with this because she's told him forever that he ruined her life. Lizzy signs the release and asks if she can go see Zola in day care, but Meredith tells her they don't let the adults come and go because it's hard on the kids. Derek sees his sister is bummed at this and says he'll bring Zola to come see her later, and kisses Lizzy on the head. Meredith leaves and Bailey catches her in the hallway, also telling her not to sit down when she gets to the wedding. Meredith has no response. Hunt tells Cristina that the divorce lawyers sent over paperwork that needs signing. Cristina seems surprised at how quickly it's going. Meredith visits an OB-GYN and Derek is with her. He wants to tell Lizzie, but Meredith doesn't want to tell anyone including Cristina about her pregnancy until she's sure things are going well. The ultrasound allows them to see the baby and hear the heartbeat, but Meredith doesn't smile. She turns away. Callie tells Bailey that she and Arizona both have red dresses and it will be "super cute." Bailey doesn't seem too excited because they're going to be married, but still living in different cities with her working many hours. Callie tells her she should leave Ben at the altar if she's that worried about it because it's "a clean break." She says she's kidding, but Bailey is stunned. Alex walks Jo through the steps of what they're going to do in surgery and that he's going to let her take down the adhesions. She asks if it's because she told him about her messed-up upbringing. "Oh, yeah, because I feel so bad you were a dumpster-diving orphan I'm going to let you hack up a 10-year-old," Alex says. "Sorry," she replies. "Stupid." "You think?" Alex says. Meredith starts to tell Cristina, but then stops herself. In the skills lab, the other interns are asking Jo is Alex is into her now because he's letting her take down the adhesions. Arizona comes in and Leah tells Arizona about what Jo is preparing to do. Arizona, too, seems surprised. He gives Jo a tip on how to do it, and then asks if she's sure she's ready for it. After Arizona leaves, Leah tells Heather, "Yup, he's into her." April tells Bailey she should maybe skip the wedding and Bailey dramatically runs through April's emotional vulnerability, telling April she thinks she's going to get lost in her feelings at the wedding because she's just broken up with Jackson and end up back with him. April almost cries and tells Bailey she knew she'd understand. Bailey tells her to suck it up. "If I have to go, you have to go," Bailey says. Jackson goes over a scan and says Lizzy's calves are a little shorter than expected. The solution would be to take some nerve from her other leg, but Derek rejects this and says they need to find another donor. He angrily tells them to cancel the procedure. April finds Jackson and tells him to bring a date to Bailey's wedding so they can be focused on their dates and not each other. She tells him he's wearing a strapless dress. Jackson says he can't find a date with one day's notice. April asks Stephanie, the intern, if she'd like to go to Bailey's wedding with Jackson, who tries to resist this idea. But April reminds him her dress will be "strapless and tight." Jackson tells Stephanie he'll pick her up in the locker room at 1 in the afternoon. Stephanie leaves, wondering what just happened. Jackson, in turn, wants to pick April's date and thinks Shane, another intern, is a solid candidate. Lizzy is surprised to learn her calves are too short. She tells Meredith it's fine, and Meredith tells her Derek thinks it's too much so if he tries to talk her out of it she has to be forceful. Lizzy tells Meredith she's "got some balls," asking for body parts after not even having a wedding and sending just a couple of pictures of Zola over email. She tells Meredith that they're family, but she basically isn't feeling much of the love. Meredith says her version of family is different than theirs and Lizzy brings up Lexie. Meredith doesn't want to talk about Lexie. Lizzy tells Meredith that she, of all people, should realize "you need spares in a family you need as many as you can get." Meredith tells Lizzy it was "very nice" to talk with her, and leaves. Alex tells Jackson he's bringing a flask in case the wedding gets boring. Jackson tells him he's bringing a date and could try to find one for Alex. Alex hates this idea, but tells Avery just to make sure he doesn't find someone ugly. Lizzy tells Derek she's doing the procedure and tells him to "just say thank you." In surgery, Jo is removing the adhesions and it's going well for a moment, but she accidentally cuts a hole in the boy's stomach and Alex has to move her out of the way. Jackson goes to Stephanie and explains that he has to find a date for the guy he was going to go with. Jo freezes in the O.R. and Alex yells at her to leave. Arizona is worried about the fact that she can't wear heels to Bailey's wedding. Callie jokes around about it a bit until Arizona asks her to at least acknowledge that she knows what she's talking about. Callie gets serious and tries to make Arizona feel better. She smiles, and as they go to sleep, Arizona turns and still looks concerned. In bed, Meredith asks Derek if he's still mad at her for going to Lizzy. He says he's "medium." She says she just wants him to be better so they can put the whole plane crash behind them. Derek tells her the lawyer called and said they have a strong case, "especially now that Cristina and Owen are getting divorced." Meredith asks what that has to do with anything, and Derek tells her about the conflict of interest if Hunt is married to one of the plaintiffs. Meredith wonders why Cristina didn't tell her that. Derek reminds her that she didn't tell Cristina about the pregnancy and adds, "Maybe things are different now." Bailey is at work the morning of her wedding and everyone is surprised to see her. Jo is outside telling Stepahnie how upset she is about the surgery. Stephanie asks Jo if she'll go with her and Jackson, and Jackson's "friend" to the wedding. Stephanie doesn't know it's Alex. Cristina and Hunt get a gunshot wound patient. Cristina is going to have to work on the man's heart, but Hunt says there's a bullet in the stomach in the abdomen. He says he can do it or he can call someone else. Cristina tells him he can do it, adding, "amicable, right?" Webber asks Bailey if she wants to scrub in on a quick surgery that should take the edge off before the wedding. Ben shows up and Bailey tells him about the surgery. Ben tells her that he called Webber to suggest it, knowing it would help her. Webber tells her he'll see her in the O.R. Ben leaves and says, "I'll see you at the altar." Bailey freezes at this. Jo goes and admits to Arizona that she messed up her procedure. Jo tells Alex that she doesn't think he had any business having an intern do what she did. Arizona gets serious and asks, "What exactly are you saying about your attending?" Cristina tells Meredith that she's scrubbing in with Hunt, who wants to sign their divorce papers. Meredith asks her why she didn't tell her that the divorce was because of the plane crash lawsuit. Cristina says she didn't know. Hunt comes over and asks Cristina if she's ready for their surgery and she says nothing. Stephanie tells Shane that Jackson asked her to the wedding, and Shane tells her that April asked him, but he didn't realize it was a date. He thought it was "getting to know the interns in a casual, stress-free environment." "That was the free donuts thing in the lounge," she says. "This is a wedding." Shane says he can't go on a date with his boss instead of getting "wrapped up in the ladies." Arizona confronts Alex, who tells her the patient is going to be fine. Arizona says Jo thinks Alex dumped her into a dangerous procedure to take the fall. Alex says he was standing there to take over if it got hairy. He tells her he's trying to be like Arizona, who let her "try crap" so he'd get confidence in himself. She reminds him she gave him opportunities, but also encouragement and support. "I didn't drop kick you into the deep end of the pool and yell, 'Swim, idiot.' You're a teacher now your students fail, you fail." Bailey is a nervous wreck, dropping case files. Webber sees this and she asks him if he was "like this." She says that if it goes well in 10 years, she'll think of this moment as "cold feet." If they're in the midst of a divorce, she'll think she knew it was a mistake the day they got married. Webber tells her "a little bit of doubt is just a sign of an intelligent adult." Callie preps Derek and tells him to close his eye, enjoy his nap and he's "got nothing to worry about." Meredith, meanwhile, is watching from the gallery and telling Jackson that she's going to be watching. "No mistakes," she says. Jackson knocks over a tray of tools and tells Stephanie to "get that woman out of my gallery." Stephanie doesn't want to, but Jackson tells her, "Now." Meredith says over the intercom that she wouldn't dare, but Stephanie seems to be headed toward Meredith. Alex confronts Jo about how she "narced" on him to his boss. She says she worked hard to get there and isn't going to let herself get fired. Alex tells her she can't go crying to his boss every time she gets scared. He tells her she can't cry at all when she gets scared "because it's scary in there all the time." She says she thought that after she blew the appie, she'd be a good target if she messed this up. She says she gets that it's paranoid and adds that she doesn't always trust people who try to help her. Alex mocks this and says "yeah, yeah, you're a beaten dog and you bite people who try to feed you. I don't give a crap about your sad story." He tells her to "get the hell over it," and tells her she "burned a bridge" with her and she should grow up before she burns a bridge with every other attending she might work with. Jackson brings over 50 centimeters of prime nerve for Derek's hand. In surgery, Cristina is harsh and cold to the nurse and Hunt. Afterward, Hunt asks Cristina what that was about and she tells him she didn't know they were getting divorced because of the lawsuit. Hunt says he wants her and the others to get the money. They argue about her going to Minnesota and she says he's "hiding behind the lawsuit," but Hunt finally says he picked the airline. He explains that he had to make a budget cut and went with a cheaper airline. Cristina tells him he's not responsible, but Hunt insists that a lot of people made a lot of small decisions that made that plane take off with her and the others in it, and he was one of them. Cue the music montage: Jackson puts on his tie; Meredith gets her dress; Alex puts on his coat; April puts on her earrings and glances back at Jackson; Cristina sits stoically until Meredith extends her write for help putting on a bracelet; Stephanie tries to curl her eyelashes in a mirror while Shane shines his shoes. Meredith gives Derek a kiss. He's in a hospital bed and Meredith tells him Callie said it couldn't have gone better. Before she leaves, Derek pulls her close and says, "It may have worked." They both smile. Arizona puts on a flat-bottomed shoe and Callie loses it. She goes off on Arizona, telling her to "suck it up" and stop making everything about her leg. She says she's been supportive for months, and she also hasn't "had sex in five months because of the leg enough about the leg!" Arizona is stunned, says nothing, and puts the other flat on her prosthetic foot. Callie allows herself a little smile. Meredith checks on Lizzy, who tells her she realizes she's pushy. She tells Meredith that she doesn't "have to want a truckload of Derek's sisters in (her) life." Meredith sits down, warning that she's "not very good at this," but she's willing to try. She makes Lizzy promise "not to blab it to the whole family." She hands over her ultrasound picture. Lizzy is happy. Bailey is making her way to her car, which she wanted to drive herself in her wedding dress, when a limo pulls up. Webber steps out. Bailey smiles. Jackson and Alex show up to the locker room and Stephanie looks all nice and dressed up. A crabby Alex asks, "So, did she bring her friend, or what?" Jo steps out of the restroom and Alex says, "Oh, c'mon." Jo also looks none too pleased, asking Stephanie, "He's the guy?" Hunt puts on his coast and Cristina comes to see him. She asks if the lawsuit was the only reason he asked for a divorce. He says, "There were many reasons." He says, "You were done a long time ago." "I'm asking about you," she says. Hunt says nothing. "Let me put it another way," she says. "I wanted to try again. I was going to ask you if we could try again, and you said, 'I want a divorce.'" Hunt attacks her in a good way. They kiss all passionately. We cut to Webber and Bailey in the back of the limo. Webber gets a phone call from the hospital saying Adele just arrived there. The paramedics brought her and she's vomiting blood. Bailey orders the limo driver to turn around and take them to Seattle Grace Hospital. The crowd is gathered at the wedding. We see Webber catch up to Adele, who is still vomiting blood. Webber wants to work on her himself, but the other doctor orders him to step away. Bailey, in her wedding dress, says she'll do it. She has the nurses take her dress off and gets everything ready. Back at the wedding, Callie admits to Arizona and Meredith that she may have "by mistake, said that if she had any doubts she should leave." Callie says she was joking and Bailey was nervous. "How nervous?" asks Ben, who overheard this. Everyone turns to look at him. "How nervous was she, Callie?" he asks again. No response. Bailey is still working on Adele. As we watch Bailey cart Adele toward an O.R., voiceover Meredith tells us that "the body doesn't know the difference between nerves and excitement, panic and doubt, the beginning and the end. The body just tells you to get the hell out. "Sometimes you ignore it that's the reasonable thing to do but sometimes you listen. You're supposed to trust your gut, right?" We see Bailey's dress on a cart next to the bloody sheets from Adele's emergency hospital bed as voiceover Meredith adds, "When your body says run, run."

3Everybody's Crying Mercy
03 Oct 2013Description ▼
Callie is sleeping on Meredith and Derek's floor. Arizona seems to be picking out what to wear. All the interns are sleeping on the floor of Alex's living room. Cristina wakes Alex up and they start talking about how she should look online for someone to sleep with. The subject turns to Alex and Jo, and Cristina discovers they haven't slept together. Callie is helping get Zola to and from day care, and Meredith and Derek wonder what they'll do if or when she fixes her marriage. Bailey calls Meredith to give her the update about how Webber is doing. Webber doesn't want to be fed through a tube. Shane is worried. In the locker room, Jo tells Stephanie and Leah that Alex hasn't made a move yet. She's wearing sexy underwear just in case. At the hospital, Arizona is wearing a dress and has a new haircut because she ants to look nice. Hunt takes Cristina and Arizona to the outpatient surgery ward, which is destroyed because of the storm. He wants them to get the board together and take action to fix it. He says the doctors all have to get along in order to make things happen. Arizona leaves and Cristina and Hunt nearly have a moment, so Cristina walks away, saying they "can't be alone together." April tells Jackson she hasn't heard yet about her boards. She tells him that if she doesn't pass he'll know that the first time wasn't his fault. A woman named Kathleen comes into the ER after being struck with the jagged end of a baseball bat. Kathleen tells Leah that in case she dies, she needs Leah to tell her husband that she cheated on him with her brother. Leah is stunned. Callie asks April if she "heard back yet." This could either be a reference to the boards or Matthew's proposal. Arizona walks in and asks Callie if they're still on for couples therapy that night at 7. Callie says it's not a good idea. Arizona says she'll be there. Meredith calls Shane and tells him to order the tube for Webber so that it's ready when he comes to his sense. Jackson brings Stephanie to meet his patient, Cara, and her husband Carlos. Cara has burn scars on the entire right side of her face. He explains the procedure and shows her a simulation of what she'll look like. She and Carlos can't believe it. Jackson also says the hospital is going to cover it because they know Cara and Carlos are maxed out on their insurance. Leah stumbles through explaining Kathleen's progress to her husband -- and his brother. Cristina talks a 17-year-old boy named Michael and his parents through a heart procedure that she hopes could save him from a transplant. The parents are happy, but Alex says it's risky and he could end up needing a transplant anyway. Michael's mom doesn't want to go through waiting for a donor heart again -- she did it once while he was an infant. Michael agrees that the chance of another donor matching is unlikely. His parents agree. Cristina says they can get started that day if his MRI checks out. Bailey isn't happy with Shane after the feeding tube showed up in Webber's room. Shane says he was trying to be proactive. Webber tells to be proactive by getting some soup. Hunt tells Jackson his pro-bono surgery can't happen because the board (meaning, Jackson) said all available funds are being reallocated to storm repair. Jackson says his surgery was booked way before the storm. Jackson pulls ranks and tells Hunt he needs him to move patients around -- even send some to Seattle Pres, if needed -- and be a "traffic cop." Hunt, rather surprised, says, "Yes, sir." Cristina calls Meredith and they chat about Cristina's heart surgery and Meredith complains that Derek took a nap in the grocery store parking lot and she didn't get to take a nap. Cristina peeks in on Webber and tells Meredith he has no feeding tube. Meredith falls asleep on the phone. Jackson tells Stephanie that he made sure Hunt got the message that the pro-bono surgery is happening, but Cara's room is empty when they get there. We next see Callie complain to Hunt about moving her surgeries. Hunt tells Jackson that he took his advice and moved Cara to Seattle Pres. Jackson now has a couple of glottal lipos instead. Hunts says he's doing what a "traffic cop" does. During Kathleen's surgery, Leah worries that Kathleen won't make it and she'll have to tell Kathleen's husband about his wife's affair. Shane prepares Webber's soup and Webber effectively asks Shane to let him eat in peace. Webber struggled to get the spoon to his mouth, then can't swallow when it gets there. Alex and Jo have an awkward exchange in a supply closet, ending in neither of them making a move or making any suggestion about when they should have sex. Jo is frustrated. Cristina talks to Hunt about the heart surgery. He says it's risky but wishes her luck, then they nearly have another moment when Hunt says that's the point at which he'd normally kiss her. Callie interrupts and asks them if couples therapy was any good for, then answers her own question by saying, "Obviously not, I mean, look at you -- no offense." Callie then gets a call on her cell phone from Leah, who says something has gone wrong in Kathleen's surgery and they need to cut Kathleen's clavicle. Callie yells through the phone that they can't do that themselves and starts running for the O.R., but she's too late. By the time she gets there, April has cut into the clavicle and something bad has happened. Callie berates April for cutting the clavicle, but April insists she fixed it. In surgery, Cristina gives Alex a hard time about not having sex with Jo. He says he feels like "it's gotta be the right time" with Jo, unlike with the many women he's slept with since Izzie. Cristina mocks him for this, too. She gets started with the surgery. Jackson vents to Stephanie about Hunt's actions but she wants to leave because she's not learning anything from doing a lipo and everyone else is studying for their boards. At their house, Derek and Meredith aren't sleeping because the baby isn't sleeping. She tells Derek about Webber being stubborn but Derek falls asleep. Meredith heads to the hospital. Jo tells Stephanie and Leah they have to leave Alex's house so that she can sleep with Alex. She's on her last pair of sexy underwear until laundry day. Leah gets a page and runs for the O.R. She finds Callie trying to revive Kathleen, but she's gone. Callie calls Kathleen's time of death. Leah worries about whether she should tell Kathleen's husband about the affair and April says the fact that she died is enough bad information for him, but Callie disagrees. Callie tells Leah that Kathleen trusted her to tell him the truth and she has to do it because it's the truth and it's honest. Bailey is surprised to see Meredith at the hospital. They argue about whether Webber should have the feeding tube, and they go off to see the swallow study. Shane, hearing all this, goes to Webber's room and tells him he needs the tube and he's going to do it so that Meredith doesn't have to go in there and do it herself. Hunt tells Jackson he has one more patient -- Cara. Hunt lied about having moved Cara so that Jackson could do the three lipos, which will pay for the pro-bono surgery. Hunt says he was trying to make the point. Jackson sees Hunt's point, then tells him he needs to lie to the rest of the board to get them together and meet. Cristina runs into a wall on the heart surgery and tells Alex he was right. Michael needs a heart transplant. She closes up. Jackson comes and sits with April as she's about to receive her boards result. She passed and she gets excited, and he gives her a high five. They walk away, both smiling very slightly. Callie tells Kathleen's husband and her family about Kathleen's death. Leah starts to tell the man there's one more thing Kathleen asked the doctors to tell him, but Callie notices the guy's brother holding him while he cries, and she interrupts saying, "she loves you -- she wanted us to tell you that she loves you." Derek, walking around like a zombie, gets to the hospital and asks Meredith to leave a note next time she leaves. Bailey and Meredith get to Webber's room and see that Shane has already put in the feeding tube. He says he did what needed to be done because Webber was starving right in front of them. He leaves without saying anything else. Michael's parents are upset at hearing the news that their son has to go on the transplant list. Cristina tells his parents that they need to give Michael the news with an optimistic outlook. All the board doctors are paged at night and they run over. Hunt can't believe it worked when they all show up. Jackson says they're going to hold a gala fundraiser to get funding to reopening the outpatient surgery ward. Hunt is going to tell them how much they need, and they al sit down. Alex gets home to find Jo waiting for him. She says they have the place to themselves and they go off to have sex. In the elevator after the meeting, Cristina tells Hunt they should date other people and that will help them get over these little moments they keep having. She asks him to tell her he'll try. He says he'll try. Callie shows up to couples therapy and Arizona is relieved. Callie says she's been wishing Arizona hasn't told her and they could go back to being happy, but she realizes they weren't happy -- "at least you weren't, and so we do things like have sex with other people." Callie says she doesn't think it was a mistake. She doesn't want to talk about Arizona having sex with someone else, so she's not going to go into the therapy session, but she thinks Arizona should. Callie leaves. Webber wakes up and sees Meredith sitting next to his bed. He tells her he didn't put her as his emergency contact because he considered her family. He said he hoped she would be able to take emotion out of the medical decisions and not let them operate on him when he was all but dead. He suggests that he doesn't really want to be alive if it means getting fed through a tube. He says again that he thought she could not be sentimental about the decisions, but he was "wrong."

The doctors are all prepped for a black-tie fundraiser. Jackson leads Hunt into the gala, which Jackson described as "simple, tasteful, conservative." They walk in an see a Vegas-style extravaganza, complete with acrobats and random fireballs. Bailey and Meredith argue about whether they should force treatment on Webber. Meredith suggests they let him see what not having treatment is really like. Leah is looking for someone to trade her pediatric shift. The paramedics bring in three guys who they're calling "John, Jerry and Jake Doe," who were high on heroin when they crashed into a tree. Alex seems to fix his stare on "Jake" as he's wheeled away. At the gala, the competition is going to get fierce as Jackson announces that he's giving 10 percent of whatever is raised to the department that raises the most money. Derek has already started putting on his show, juggling in the middle of a crowd of new fans. A guy is "starstruck" while talking to Callie, who he recognizes from her TED talk. She gets distracted for a moment when she sees Arizona over his shoulder. He catches her attention when he mentions that his wife, like hers, died in a plane crash. Arizona, of course, didn't die -- but Callie goes along with his incorrect assumption. Bailey tells an older man named Gene Spears that his cancer has spread and he's no longer eligible for surgery. She says this is the worst-case scenario. He doesn't seem too interested, instead cracking jokes about wanting topless nurses. At the gala, Alex is distracted and needs to go outside. Hunt meets a woman named Emma Marley who knows he's the chief of surgery. He sees Cristina flirting with a guy and decides to "buy" Emma a drink (it's open bar). Meredith makes Derek a little jealous with a "sparkly eye thing" while talking to a potential donor. April, who's gone back to the hospital to get some cooling packs for the champagne at the party, walks in on Arizona crying in a supply closet. Alex also comes back to the hospital and asks about the heroin guys. Shane tells him they're "nothing we can't handle." Meanwhile, Shane is trying to convince Stephanie that even though there is a lot going on, they shouldn't call other doctors for help. Cristina sees Hunt talking to Emma and walks over to interrupt, ditching the guy she was talking to. She tries to get Hunt to instead go talk to an older lady. Meanwhile, April overhears Callie telling a group of people about Arizona dying. Bailey comes back to Gene's room, screaming at him for having talked inappropriately to the nurse. He tells her she can't quit, offending her by using Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King as examples of how "you people" are supposed to be stronger and tougher. He tells her to get off her ass and "do something" to save him. Shane is about to stick a needle in Jake Doe's heart. Stephanie tries to stop him but he's having none of it. April has taken a couple of the champagne bottles back to share with Arizona, who tells her she can't stand the way Callie looks at her. Hunt catches Emma chatting up donors and telling a story he'd been telling. She admits she's from maternal fetal medicine at Seattle Pres. She says they've been hurting and she's been wanting her board to throw a fundraiser, so she's borrowing Hunt's. He asks why she's spent so much time talking to him, then, and she says, "Look at you." Alex is still bummed, back at the gala, but Cristina is all giddy with the competition. Callie is now stuck hearing from a woman who lost her husband and wants to share her story with Callie, but Jackson starts giving a welcome speech. While he's giving the speech, one of the acrobats at the edges of the stage falls down and lands on another woman. The acrobat stands up and her broken shin bone is sticking out of her leg. Stepahnie calls Cristina and tells her Shane is operating on one of the heroin guys, and Cristina heads to the hospital. On the way out, she tells Alex she has to work on "one of the junkies," and he asks which one. Arizona and April ask Leah to go to the party to steal food and snacks. After Leah leaves, April tells Arizona that Callie has been telling everyone at the gala that she's dead. Webber struggles with a nurse trying to put a breathing test tube in his mouth. Bailey walks in and she tells Webber about Gene, who is obnoxious and ornery. She tells Webber that he needs to show the same fight. She gives him a whole speech but he continues to fight her, eventually pushing her off of himself and into a chair. Cristina is in surgery with Shane and she tells him he's a shark for having tried to do as much of the operation himself as he did. She says it's a good thing. The surgery goes well. Gene tells Bailey that he's not trying to offend her with the things he says. THe guys at the park, he says, won't let him play anymore because of the things he says. Derek sees Meredith performing surgery and gives her a hard time for breaking their deal. He joins her. April and Arizona are now giggling drunk when April suddenly asks, "Can I try on your leg?" They both laugh. Callie and Hunt are about to operate on the acrobat and Jackson brings a bunch of big donors to the gallery to watch what the doctors really do. One asks, "How much do you need?" Jo catches Alex trying to draw his own blood. He explains that he thinks his dad is one of the junkies. After doing their surgery, Derek and Meredith are giddy and they start flirting and remembering the times back when they used to have sex in on-call rooms. Bailey brings Gene in to share Webber's room as motivation for Webber to fight. Stepahnie and Shane are celebrating their shark-ness as Stephanie is excited about the night they had. Shane kisses her. Jackson walks in, sees this and leaves. Cristina's Mr. Money Bags from the gala hands her a big check and asks her if they can go somewhere, but she tells him her flirting with him was all about the money. He says that's even hotter, but she leaves. Stephanie chases down Jackson at the gala. He thinks she was mad about him not inviting her to the gala and she took it out on him with Shane. She insists Shane kissed her, she didn't ask for it. He says he didn't know she wanted to come to the gala. He also says he doesn't want any games and he wants her to tell him what she wants. She tells him she didn't want Shane to kiss her, "I want you to kiss me." Gene shares some of the info from an end-of-life care brochure. Webber tells Gene it could be worse and then adds, "You don't want to die here." Gene starts joking about how the food at the end-of-life place must be better than the slop at the hospital. Webber, meanwhile, reaches over and grabs the breath test. Bailey sees this and looks a bit relieved. Cristina sees Hunt at the hospital and asks him if he wants to join her at the bar, but Emma walks in and Hunt looks happy to see her. Cristina looks surprised and excuses herself. Alex stands outside "Jake Doe's" room and Jo comes to him and says she has the results of his paternity test. Just as Alex is about to say he doesn't want to know, Jo says, "He's your dad." She apologizes for jumping the gun but Alex walks away and kicks a trash can on the way. Arizona and April leave the hospital completely wasted and get into a cab. Leah leans toward Arizona and demands that she be treated with respect, Arizona taps her on the nose and says, "You're adorable!" A paramedic brings in victims of a multple-car collision, and Derek and Meredith decide to stay at the hospital and help.

Everyone seems to be having a rough time waking up, but Callie is helping Derek and Meredith get out the door each day, and gives Meredith a kiss on her way out. Cristina and Jo are treating a guy named Jimmy Evans, who is 57. He's playfully flirtatious with Jo as Cristina passes him off to her. Cristina gets a message about a possible match for a transplant patient. Jo reveals Jimmy is Alex's dad, but Alex doesn't want to see him. Meredith steals Bailey's liver transplant. Leah, meanwhile, brings Arizona coffee and Arizona thinks she might have brought Leah back to her apartment after the gala. Callie gets annoyed when Arizona gives her the mortgage slips for the apartment and expects Callie to thank her. Stephanie is nervous about meeting Jackson's mom. Callie and Hunt compare notes on their rebound relationships. Callie's is with Derek and Meredith. Hunt's is with Emma from Seattle Presbyterian, who has made him banana bread. They go to treat 22-year-old Reese, who was severely injured while hang gliding. Her sister disapproves of her apparent daredevil stunts. Webber gets up out of bed to take two steps and Catherine and Bailey cheer him on. He's annoyed. Outside the room, Catherine tells Bailey she's worried about Webber's progress, but Bailey says he needs more time and support. Catherine wants to help. She goes to get some pillows for Webber and walks in on Jackson and Stephanie making out. The first meeting does not go well. Catherine chastises Jackson while she goes back to take care of Webber. Meredith checks on her patient, a woman named Sam. She's the one getting a new heart and liver. Stephanie checks on a guy named Mr. Samuels who has had trouble urinating. His penis is swollen after being stung by 25 or 30 bees. He seems to be making up a story about falling asleep while eating a honey sandwich naked, then asks Stephanie if the treatment would be different if the bees were actually hornets. Meredith and Derek try to figure out which of them can pick up Zola. Meredith is going to check with Callie. Jo has Jimmy walking on a treadmill and says he needs to get off drugs if he's going to get better. She's not going to release him until he gets on methadone. He's a blues guitarist and says he's canceled gigs because of his hospital stay and needs to get back. Reese's sister explains that she's already donated bone marrow and a liver to her daredevil sister. She's ready to give her a kidney now. She further explains that Reese had cancer at 2 years old and their parents had her to save Reese. She's a "donor baby." Stephanie needs help with Mr. Samuels and goes to Catherine, a urologist. Stephanie stumbles over the explanation that she needs assistance with a large penis. During the kidney surgery, Callie mentions that she needs to kick Arizona out of her apartment, but April stands up for Arizona and says the apartment is already outfitted for Arizona's needs. Shane brings the message to Callie that Meredith needs her to get Zola have a tea party at 3, but Callie says she can't do it until 6. Leah comes into a surgery with Arizona, telling her that Arizona mentioned after the gala that she should scrub in. But Arizona asks her to go help on the floor. Jo comes to Alex and urges him to connect with his dad before she discharges him, telling Alex about how badly she wanted a father. Catherine asks Mr. Samuels directly if he put his penis into a hornet's nest. His bladder bursts as Catherine is giving Stephanie a hard time for her shoddy work. Catherine tells Webber she wants him to come home with her. Meredith gets a call from day care. Zola fell and hit her head. Bailey tells her to go and she'll check in with Cristina. Jo comes to Jimmy with news that she got him into a rehab clinic for free, but he doesn't want to go. He opens up about how he didn't promise her he'd go, even when she suggested it, because making promises and not following through with them is how you lose everything and make your kids hate you. Jo goes straight to Alex and asks him to help his dad, but Alex tells Jo not to talk to him about it again. Sam is going into heart failure and Cristina decides to operate right away. In the hornet's nest penis guy's surgery, Jackson ends up with Stephanie and Catherine, who makes some innuendos about how men often put their penises where they don't belong. Callie tells Reese's sister she Reese won't need a kidney right away. She tells Callie to "open the toolbox." Callie says they can wait for a donor and she doesn't need to be spare parts for her sister anymore. The woman says she would like to get a boyfriend and go on a cruise, she's relieved that she can say, "no." Callie excitedly gets in on it. Mr. Samuels' wife comes in and isn't too surprised that her husband put his penis in the hornets' nest while she was out of town. She says he likes a little pain with his pleasure and, while it's odd, it's just one weird thing and there's so much else that's great about him. Meredith rushes back to the O.R., but Cristina tells her she isn't prepared to do the surgery and Bailey is going to do it. Meredith hasn't read a journal article that Cristina asked her to read and Cristina just thinks Bailey is better prepared. Leah is tentative while examining Webber and he tells her not to hesitate in giving him a thorough exam because anything less is making her a bad doctor and him a sicker patient. His pancreas still needs a drain. Catherine comes in and realizes he's not going back home with her. Callie is leaving and Hunt mentions that he's going to talk to Reese's sister, who decided to donate a kidney after all. Alex ends up in an elevator with his dad, who doesn't seem to recognize him during the whole ride. Alex appears nearly ready to say something when the doors open and Jimmy half turns and says, "Take it easy, pal." Cristina tells Meredith that she's not as good of a surgeon as Cristina is, because she has different priorities, cut back in the O.R. and doesn't do research. Cristina tells Meredith that Bailey, Callie and Ellis Grey "never let up," but Meredith has let up. She says Meredith has made "valid choices" but they're affecting her skills. "We're in different places now," Cristina says, "and that's OK." Callie finds Arizona at the bar and tells her she needs her to leave the apartment. Arizona is stunned and doesn't say anything, but she hears, "You can stay at my place." It's Leah. Arizona admits she doesn't remember what happened at her house. Leah says they "hung out." She replays the whole night for Arizona, which just included eating grilled cheese sandwiches and watching film of Derek doing a fancy spinal surgery. Stephanie confronts Catherine at the bar and tries to clear the air. It works and Catherine asks her to stay when Jackson shows up for drinks. Callie is back in her apartment and dances in her underwear while Sofia sleeps. Meredith is upset when Derek gets home because she wasn't able to give Zola her tea party and Derek didn't help because he was in a surgery all afternoon. Meredith is upset because she's having to put off her work and can't give 100 percent to both her work and children.

Derek demonstrates a brain programming feature that is allowing a quadriplegic to make hand movements on a simulated hand on a monitor by thinking about them. Mickey, the quadriplegic helping with the demo, is excited by the development but wonders where Callie is, as she's been part of the project. Derek sees some lack of brain activity on Mickey's monitor that concerns him. The interns are now second-year's and Shane is shaken when he sees a new, second-year coat with Heather's name on it. Jo is wondering why Alex seems to be avoiding her. Leah is still trying to make a connection with Arizona, saying she wants to "take it further" with her. Stephanie is called over by April to help with a man named Ben who has an ankle fracture. He fell off a moving sidewalk at the airport on the way to Alaska. Hunt brings Emma to work to observe a surgery. Cristina thinks it's "sweet" that Emma is at the hospital. Meredith is short with Cristina. Meredith is trying to decide on a research project for a grant. Webber tells her that her mother, Ellis, was working on something that wasn't finished. Stephanie panics when she sees a scan from Ben and drops a red coffee mug that Derek had accidentally brought in from home (and had asked Shane to put away, but Shane left it in the locker room when he saw Heather's lab coat, and Jo picked the mug up and used it). She found on the scan that he has a tumor near his heart. Callie tells Derek she's not moving forward with their brain project. Derek is disappointed and says that Mickey isn't going to be happy. Stephanie shows Cristina the scan and Cristina confirms that without treatment, Ben will be dead in a month. Jo brings Meredith her mother's journal. Callie encourages her to finish Ellis' portal vein research, saying she should invest in her "brand." Shane asks Derek if he can switch off neuro, but Derek doesn't pay much attention. He's focused on a tumor on Mickey's brain. Derek says there's a possibility of using super glue to stop blood flow to the tumor and possibly shrink its size. Cristina talks to Ben about the heart situation, and he says he's had the inoperable AVM for nearly two years. Cristina asks about a couple of types of treatment, but Ben and his wife ask her to "let it go." Derek breaks the news of the tumor to Mickey, who wants to leap doing the testing of the brain sensors. Derek says it's too dangerous to take out the tumor, but Mickey refuses to grant Derek access to the sensors without trying to take out the tumor. Arizona asks Alex for advice on how to handle a one-night stand that was mostly just making out, and Alex says Leah was like that. Arizona doesn't give anything away. Shane, trying to glue the coffee mug back together, sees Ben's heart scan and runs to Cristina to suggest the glue trick Derek was talking about on the brain tumor. Cristina doesn't think it's a terrible idea, but says she'd been a "crap load" of glue. Derek confronts Callie about why she's bailing on the project, saying she's letting her personal problems impact her career decisions. She asks him to bear with her while she tries to figure things out for herself. Jo asks Webber a series of questions to try to determine why his elbow is hurting. He tells her to look deeper. Bailey sees that Meredith has moved on from the portal vein research, but Meredith says she can't figure out how to take her mother's research further. Trying to work her way through a printer jam, Meredith stops and wonders if anyone has tried to 3-D print a portal vein. Cristina tells Ben and his wife about the glue idea. He says the idea that she could save Ben's life is "awful," because they tapped all their money by living it up since his diagnosis. Cristina tells Emma about the glue idea she's going to try. Emma knows it's never been done in a heart and admires Cristina's "balls." Cristina then fully introduces herself as Hunt's ex-wife. Emma hastily exits. Alex runs off for the night and tells Jo it's none of her business where he's going each night. Callie tries to talk to Mickey about the dangers of the tumor operation he wants Derek to do. He reveals to her that he's a quadriplegic because he caused a car accident while drunk and killed two girls. He says he deserves to have died in the car, but when Callie asked him to be part of this project that could affect others in a good way, he thought he was worth having around. He asks her to give his brain to science if he dies so that he can help someone. We next see Alex at a bar where his dad is playing guitar. Callie convinces Derek to go ahead and try Mickey's surgery. In surgery, Cristina is impressed with Shane's instincts with the glue idea. Shane finds Derek and tells him he doesn't want to work with him and Derek tells him to go. Cristina tells Ben that they did no damage to his heart and the AVM might not continue to grow. This makes him nervous because of how little money they have. They're not just bankrupt, they're criminals. Leah tells Stephanie and Shane that she's "in love" with Arizona, but Arizona calls her over and tells her to adjust her expectations because it was "one night." Leah says she can get carried away when she opens up a little bit, and admired Arizona and misunderstood. She promises it won't happen again and leaves, crying. At the bar, Alex's dad sits down next t him and Alex offers to pay for his drink. Jimmy recognizes Alex and identifies him as one of the doctors from the hospital. Jimmy tells Alex that he once met a pediatric surgeon who saved his 2-year-old son's life. Alex asks Jimmy where his family is now and Jimmy says it's a "complicated answer." Jimmy offers Alex a chance to play guitar with him -- at least one of the songs his daddy taught him. "I might know one of those," Jimmy says. Derek runs into trouble in Mickey's surgery and there is ultimately no brain activity. Jo is excited when she realizes Webber has a pancreatic pseudo-cyst. She says, "Bam!" He warns her to be a little more subdued when she tells her patients what is actually bad news, but then he laughs and tells her she's done a good job. Meredith tells Callie she's doing her mother's research. Meanwhile, Alex is playing guitar with his dad, but Jimmy doesn't know Alex is his son. He abruptly stops playing and explains to Alex that he wishes he'd stuck with teaching his kid. Jimmy asks Alex if he can show him a picture of his boy. Jimmy hands him a picture of Nicky, his half-Japanese son who lives in South Florida. Jimmy says he hasn't been back there in years. Alex tells Jimmy to leave his son alone and not let him get to know him any more than he already has. Jimmy doesn't understand why Alex has suddenly turned on him, but Alex punches him in the face. Before leaving, Alex stands over Jimmy for a moment and it just might have been long enough for it to register in Jimmy's mind. Callie tells Derek she's not going to drop the project because she wants to stick with it for a million people she'll never meet. She tells Derek she needs his help. Cristina tells Meredith she made history and saved a man from death and ruined his life. She also says Hunt seems very happy with Emma. Meredith is barely listening while Cristina says she doesn't feel like she exists anymore. Meredith confronts Cristina about having cast her aside last week because she had a baby. Meredith tells Cristina that she doesn't have time for anyone who doesn't want the same things she does. Alex and Jo are yelling at each other because she thinks he's cheating on her but he tells her she should be happy because he went to talk to his dad at her insistence and it turned out he feels as bad as he has in 18 years. Arizona, meanwhile, is restless and alone in bed when she texts Leah, "What are you up to?" At home, Derek tells Meredith he wants to step back from surgeries and focus on his research, but make enough time for her to have a great year of work.

Leah slips out of Arizona's bed the morning after they've clearly had sex. Leah leaves in a rush and says their relationship is casual, "not about cuddling in the morning." Leah says she's "easy peasy." Meredith and Derek are still working through who takes on which responsibilities between work and the kids. Derek has to fix the butterfly wings on Zola's costume. Meredith then checks with Alex about his preparations for the Halloween party. He's gotten a keg, nothing else. Cristina overhears about the party but declines Meredith's last-minute invitation. Stephanie is fresh out of laser-eye surgery and back to work, not taking the two days' rest her doctor recommended. Jo confides in Stephanie that Alex is still not speaking to her. Stephanie subsequently bumps into a doorway while walking through. Hunt tells Callie that he and Emma are "no longer a thing" because Emma didn't think he was ready for a relationship, based on his hesitation about telling her that he was married to Cristina. Arizona and Callie have each made a costume for Sofia and argue a little over which she should wear. Arizona says they should let Sofia choose, but Callie walks away and says she's "not doing this." Webber wants one of the interns to do his surgery. Ben shows up and, after hugging Bailey, tells Webber it's a bold move to let one of the interns operate on him. Ben wants to talk about costume ideas with Bailey. She's not into it. Ben wants Halloween to be their family's thing and he says he'll figure out what they should wear. A guy named Victor Brown comes in having been mauled by what he says was a person. He subsequently grabs Leah and bites her neck. Bailey says Leah has to get her wound looked at and has to get tested. Hunt shows Cristina the X-rays of the man who apparently did the mauling and they reveal that his organs are switched inside his body. He was shot twice where his heart should have been, but survived because his heart is on the other side of his chest cavity. She's excited. Alex comes to help Jo with a young girl named Taryn who has severe abdominal pain. Her dad seems like a busy guy whose phone keeps buzzing. Victor, the mauling victim, suddenly starts slurring his speech and apparently having a stroke. Stephanie, meanwhile, checks on a woman whose son had to drag her to the hospital to get a wound on her leg treated. She says she suffered a bug bite of some kind about four months earlier. Stephanie pulls away the bandage and sees a massively infected wound with maggots writhing in it. Meredith tells Stephanie that she shouldn't be treating patients since she just had laser-eye surgery. The woman with the maggots has a panic attack when the doctors start explaining her treatment. Her son explains that she's always been afraid of hospitals, but it's gotten worse since her husband died. Meredith says she has an idea and heads to the gift shop. Shane is quickly seeing patients who are waiting, and comes to an elderly woman with a glass eye who says she wants to see her doctor, Dr Brooks. Shane is freaked out. Shane brings Bailey back to the waiting area to see the lady, but she's gone. Bailey leaves and, as soon as she's gone, the old lady returns. She tells Shane she'll wait for Dr. Brooks. Hunt and Cristina work on the guy with the reversed organs. Things are complicated by the fact that the organs are reversed. Meredith brings the maggot lady an eye mask to distract her, and starts talking her through some memories of costumes her son wore as a child. Alex is very short with Jo about her patient. She finally asks him what she can do to make it better, but he just barks out another order. Ben walks Derek through stitching the butterfly wings and possibly gives him an idea for his brain sensors project. Webber tells Bailey she shouldn't stand in the way of him letting one of the interns operate on him. He kicks her off the case, saying one of the things that keeps him going is feeling like he's teaching the young doctors something. Callie tells Meredith that she's not going to the party because she can't be in the same place as Arizona. Leah and Stephanie, both on the bench for a while, commiserate over their circumstances while Hunt and Cristina work through their surgery together, apparently rekindling some of the fun in their relationship. Meredith goes to Webber's room to tell him she can' supervise his surgery, which he's asked her to do. He apologizes to her for having said she should have let him die and that she was the wrong choice for making his medical decisions. Alex realizes hat the young girl he's treating is not producing enough adrenaline, which is causing her stomach aches. When he and Jo get to her bed, they find she's missing. Jo had told her earlier that pediatric patients get to trick or treat around the hospital, so she's headed off on her own. Alex says her lack of adrenaline could cause her to go into shock if she is actually frightened by something. Meanwhile, Shane tells Stephanie about the old lady with the glass eye. Alex's patient, Taryn, is wandering the halls alone when she crosses paths with the old lady with the glass eye, who is stumbling around and reaches out for the girl, who collapses. Alex comes onto the scene and scoops up his patient. He also has the old lady sent to the E.R. Callie offers to stay with the maggot lady after her surgery, but the woman tells Callie that she has to soak up these moments with her child. Jo tries to talk Taryn's dad through his daughter's diagnosis and ensures him he's a good dad, despite what Alex said. The "zombie's" victim wakes up and thinks he's been quarantined. April has to snap the guy out of his paranoia and explains the whole situation to him. Bailey gets home to find her house completely decorated with smoke and flashing lights. Ben has arranged it all and given Tucker a Halloween that has made him very happy. Bailey thanks Ben profusely. He tells her he quit his residency. Arizona walks into the locker room and finds Leah, who explains that she was bit and is waiting for the guy's HIV results. Leah says she didn't say anything about it because she's trying to be "easy peasy." Arizona tells Leah about her first needle stick, when she was treating a patient who had AIDS. She says her whole body went cold. She tells Leah this isn't the time to be "easy peasy." Shane checks on the old lady with the glass eye and finally tells her that Heather died three months ago. The woman cries a bit and Shane says he hasn't found her in the system, realizing that Heather was treating her under the table and giving her inhalers for her asthma. The woman says she didn't want Heather to get into any trouble. Shane tells her that if she needs help again, she can come see him. "She was a good doctor," the woman says. "Are you as good as her?" "No," Shane says. "But I will be." Meredith is walking Jo through Webber's surgery, and Jo wants to talk about Alex. Meredith doesn't want many details but tells Jo that Alex needs her to stick with him when he's vulnerable. Bailey is upset that Ben is making their relationship unstable. They argue over it while kids knock on their door for candy. Bailey tells Ben she's "disappointed" in him for giving up on surgery after having left for his residency just a week after their wedding. Hunt calls Emma and leaves her a message about how he "can't do complicated" right now, and stammers through a message. Emma calls back right away. Meredith, trying to leave, sneaks out while Jo is explaining Webber's procedure to him. Leah is celebrating at the bar after her tests have come back clean. Stephanie is bummed because she still can't see. Jackson shows up and says he's taking Stephanie home to rest her eyes and do nothing. At the party, Callie and Arizona are both there and Sofia is wearing the princess consume. Callie tells Meredith that she realized she doesn't want to cut in half the number of Halloweens she gets to experience with Sofia, and that this is the first thing she and Arizona have agreed on in months. Cristina shows up with cupcakes -- which Meredith had previously asked her to bring if she was going to come to the party -- but after seeing everyone so focused on the kids, and without anyone having noticed she is there, she leaves the cupcakes on the entry table and leaves. Cristina ends up at the bar and runs into Shane, who buys her a drink. Jo comes to Alex's door, dressed like Tinkerbell, and apologizes for having made "one bad call" and injecting herself into his situation with his dad. He opens the door and lets her in.
8Two Against One
07 Nov 2013Description ▼
Bailey is digging around her son's room looking for something she smells that is rotting. Stephanie wakes Meredith up in the wee hours to show her something in her 3D printer. Stephanie comes over to Webber's room to excitedly tell the other interns, but Webber is holding court. Stephanie tells them to finish their rounds so they can be sitting in the front row to see it happen. April and Matthew gets the results of their "compatibility test" from a priest. They're 90 percent compatible, Matthew is still concerned about the way in which they aren't equal. April thinks he's talking about their salaries and suggests they get a joint checking account. He says they need to have sex (because he's still a virgin). Cristina is going to pass on seeing Meredith's 3D printer results because she has other things to work on. Bailey and Jo talk a patient, a food critic, through the procedure in which they're going to replace a part of his esophagus that has cancer with a part of his colon. Bailey demands that Jo get another enema on the patient before this happens because he's concerned food will literally "taste like crap." Hunt's girlfriend Emma is interviewing for a job at the hospital. Callie is interviewing her. Everyone is excited to see what Meredith's 3D printer has created. It's a fork. No one is particularly impressed, but Meredith says it's just the first step toward portal veins for patients. Derek, meanwhile, was focused on the 3D printer tech's eye twitch. Meredith shows Webber her fork and he says her mother would be proud. She tells him to doing his walking laps, and his neighbor is urging him to do the same. Derek and Jackson tell 3D printer guy that Derek could fix his twitch with a minimally invasive procedure. He doesn't seem interested. Alex senses the tension between Cristina and Meredith but Meredith doesn't want to tell him about it. Bailey is annoyed that Hunt moved her surgery from OR 2 to OR 3, but Hunt says they're identical. Cristina explains to the parents of her patient, Nathan, that she's going to have to replace a synthetic device that is supposed to help pump blood through his body. Callie interviews Emma and gets her to divulge that she moved to Seattle after going through a divorce. Callie asks Emma if it was hard for her to give up her job and her city to her ex. Alex gets to his patient, Will's, room and wakes him up. Meredith and Alex are getting ready to get several tumors out of him. Bailey gets ready for surgery and is surprised to see Ben, who is back to his old job as an anesthesiologist. Bailey, meanwhile, is apparently going through some OCD kind of stuff and, after precisely arranging her instruments, tells Jo to go rescrub. April asks Arizona how she can resist having sex with Matthew, and she asks Arizona how she resisted having sex with Leah. Arizona says she didn't resist. April leaves. Callie starts asking Emma what feeds her soul. Then she asks how interested she is in having kids. Emma knows that these questions are beyond the realm of typical job interview questions, but goes along. Hunt pokes his head in the room and Callie says it's going great, giving him an excited thumbs up. Shane, after reading some of the documentation on Meredith's 3D printer, comes to Cristina with the idea of 3D printing a new conduit for her patient, Nathan. She says it's too experimental, but he asks if she'll consider it if he does all the legwork with the FDA. She says yes. April finds Matthew outside the hospital and tells him she wants it to "be right" the first time they have sex. He says it's "really important" to him that they have sex soon, and she agrees to do it. Bailey is barking out orders and getting impatient with Jo in surgery. Ben notices something isn't right and Bailey has another semi-blackout-type episode before catching herself. Ben talks her through calming down. Cristina comes over to the 3D printer, where Stephanie is standing guard as it is printing something for Meredith. Cristina asks what would happen if it was paused and just started over. Stephanie says it would mess Meredith up. Cristina says, "Thanks," and leaves. Derek doesn't like the way Jackson isn't letting Leah handle some simple procedures on his patient. Jackson says he knows Leah is "good," but he's "better." Derek reminds Jackson that Sloan once thought he was better than Jackson and says he needs to embrace teaching the younger surgeons. In Will's surgery, Meredith and Alex disagree about skipping one of the tumors. Meredith thinks they should move on to some others to have easier access to the big one. Alex thinks they should get it now, but Meredith, as the lead surgeon, makes the call. Shane tells Cristina he's got everything sorted with the FDA, but Cristina says they can't do it because Meredith is printing something. Webber's neighbor, CJ, is talking his ear off and walks away for a moment. She collapses and Webber jumps out of bed to save her. Emma talks to Arizona after her interview with Callie and asks how long they've been divorced. Arizona clarifies that they're separated. Emma is very matter of fact about their split, and apologizes. Meredith and Alex again argue over the best way to treat Will. Bailey and Jo go to confirm that their procedure was successful and that there is no leak. It passes the first test but Baliey asks for another test. The second test looks good, as well, but Bailey has another little episode and says there's a leak. She asks Ben to confirm, and he backs her up. Harvey, the 3D printer tech, is amazed that his twitch is gone after Derek did the surgery. Derek is happy, then, to see Jackson let Leah do a couple of procedures. Webber tells April that he's exhausted after helping save CJ, but he's now excited to get back to his old job. Shane tries again to talk Cristina into using the 3D printer, but Cristina isn't giving in. Meredith and Alex again argue and Stephanie seconds Alex's challenge and tells Meredith she should stop what she's doing. Emma tells Hunt that she can't work at his hospital. She says that all the doctors there care too much about him and will support him if she were to ever break his heart and she'd just be "the bitch" who did it. She says she isn't planning to break his heart, but she says she can't risk it. She worked with her ex-husband and it didn't end well. She starts to walk away and asks Hunt not to break her heart. Alex tells Will and his mother about the surgery, which wasn't completed and could mean another surgery and more time on the peds floor, where Will isn't happy. Alex apologizes to Meredith but says they made the right call. She still insists she could have gotten the tumor. Cristina asks about the printer, which Meredith says is hers. Cristina, like Shane earlier, says it's "the hospital's," and tells Meredith that she could use it to save a child right away. Meredith abruptly and impatiently tells her to submit a proposal to the board. After Cristina walks away, Alex asks Meredith if her whole thing in surgery was about trying to prove she isn't "a lousy doctor." Meredith denies it. Webber excitedly tells Callie about how he saved his neighbor. He tells her while going for a walk around the floor. April tells Matthew that she lost herself when she had sex with Jackson and she doesn't want Matthew to lose himself the same way. She doesn't want him to have broken a promise because she knows how that feels. Leah is in Arizona's shower and asks if she's coming in. Arizona says yes and takes Callie's ring, which is on a necklace, off. Ben tells Bailey that something's "going on" and she needs help. She says she did find the source of the smell in Tucker's room. It was a bag of apple slices that might have had peanut butter on them. Derek gives Meredith a little pep talk, then tells her to go watch her liver model while he goes to pick the kids up. She goes into the room where the printer is and finds Cristina and Shane standing over it. She asks, "What the hell are you doing?" Bailey, meanwhile, is sitting along in Tucker's room, counting her own fingers.

Callie is looking for regular pantyhose and going off on the clerk at the store about not having them. She apologizes and says she's "under a lot of pressure." During this exchange, we flash to some of the more challenging moments in Callie's recent past, particularly some with Arizona, and are suddenly whisked back to one month earlier as Voiceover Callie says, "No apology in the world matters now."
10Somebody That I Used to Know
21 Nov 2013Description ▼
Bailey is again going through some obsessive-compulsive stuff, and Ben is starting to notice. Callie has apparently moved back in but Arizona is sleeping on the couch. Hunt's girlfriend Emma is working on a grant proposal in one of the hospital's conference rooms, and Cristina doesn't seem to like watching the two together. Callie and April think it's sweet. Donna Kaufman, a patient of Meredith's, has a tumor in her pancreas and it's too advanced to remove. All they can do is do something to remove the pain. Cristina and Alex are working on a baby with a heart condition. She complains to Alex about Hunt's girlfriend being there, and says she needs to have sex. Shane walks in and overhears the rest of the conversation when Alex suggests that Cristina get a "human sex toy." Shane tells Cristina that conduit they made with the 3-D printer is contaminated. Cristina goes to Alex, who is annoyed that she had him keep his patient hanging on for a procedure that isn't going to work. Hunt and Arizona work on a 6-year-old girl named Emma who was hit by a car while riding her scooter. She was brought in by a babysitter. In surgery, Leah asks Arizona if she's definitely getting back together with Callie. Arizona says they're giving it a chance and urges Leah not to wait around for the outcome. Stephanie overhears Donna telling a woman that she wants to find a woman to be with her "very special friend" Stan after she's gone. Ben talks to Derek about Bailey's apparent OCD and says he's not sure she's handling it, noting that Bailey kept a patient under for probably an hour longer than needed. Derek stops Ben that he can't hear any more because he's on the board of the hospital. He'd have to report it. Cristina and Shane wait for an elevator and he lets her know he's "available" if she's in need of getting her "ya-yas" out. Meredith comes into the conference room and tries one of the muffins that Hunt's girlfriend has made and brought in. She gets them talking about spending Thanksgiving together and winds up inviting them to her house so they can cook together. Meredith gives Stephanie some attitude, which the other interns notice. After Meredith is gone, Stephanie tells them about how she'd gotten Meredith kicked off her own surgery. Shane comes and tells Stephanie that Cristina needs the 3-D printer for the day because of a "dying baby." Stephanie isn't pleased. Webber is feeling strong and Meredith invites him to Thanksgiving. Arizona comes clean to Callie about the fact that she was "with someone" while they were separated, saying she wants to start over with a clean slate. She asks Callie if she has any questions, and Callie asks if it was more than once, twice, 10 times. The answer is yes to all of them and Callie seems OK when Arizona tells her it's definitely over. Meredith is mad at Stephanie again when Stephanie tells her Cristina and Shane are using the printer again. Meredith asks Hunt about who they should invite to Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, Stephanie gives Leah a pep talk after seeing her bummed out in the stairwell. Hunt asks Cristina about her Thanksgiving plans and says she's OK with hearing about him spending the day with Emma. Cristina thinks Emma and Hunt are having the holiday alone. Leah updates the babysitter on the 6-year-old girl's condition and assures her the surgeons are going to take care of it. The babysitter is worried she's going to get fired. She blames herself "for getting so attached." Stephanie sweet talks Jackson into giving up his claim on an O.R. so that Meredith can use it. Then she tells him that April is inviting her to her wedding, with a "plus-one." April had asked Stephanie for her address earlier, but none of the other interns said they were asked for theirs. Stephanie overhears Donna and her husband talking about finding a woman for their friend Stan. Now she's even more confused. Hunt and Derek are now talking with Ben about his claim that Bailey was "performing unnecessary procedures" due to this apparent onset of OCD. Hunt says he needs to take Bailey off the floor until she has things under control. Stephanie talks to Donna's husband, who admits that he's helping find a friend for Stan, Donna's lover. Ben tells Bailey about his conversation with Hunt and Derek. She is livid. Meredith confronts Cristina about taking over the 3-D printer, and Cristina shows her Baby Nathan in hopes of getting Meredith's sympathy, but it backfires. Meredith gets annoyed that Cristina thinks she'll get all mushy seeing a baby, and she tells Cristina that her plan to do "something flashy" with the equipment has failed and she just can't deal with it. Hunt admits to Emma that there are about 16 people coming to Thanksgiving now. She's annoyed at first, but then seems OK with it. He then suggests inviting Cristina, and she's fine with that, too. Hunt comes to Meredith and asks her to take over Bailey surgeries for the day. Callie walks Leah through helping with surgery. It goes wrong and when Arizona asks Callie to give Leah a moment to calm down, Callie realizes that "10-plus times" was Leah. She's upset. Leah and Arizona argue over Callie finding out about their fling. Jackson asks April about why Stephanie is getting her own invitation to the wedding. April admits that she didn't want to send Jackson an invitation in order to avoid rubbing it in Matthew's face. He says he shouldn't be at the wedding. She says she needs his blessing, and he tells her she has it but he shouldn't be there. Stephanie watches as Stan shows up and Donna's husband helps him through the emotions of Donna's effort to find him a woman to "replace" her. Webber is undergoing a stress test, walking on a treadmill and demanding that Jo turn up the speed so he can show how strong he is. He starts cranking up the speed himself and falls off the treadmill. Hunt confronts Bailey before starting surgery and she wants to delay the conversation until she's done with surgery. Bailey refuses to leave, so Hunt asks Meredith to move a couple of Bailey's instruments just an inch or two, and Bailey gets angry while putting them back in place. She realizes her problem, tears up and leaves the room. Webber has a broken rib. Arizona tells the 6-year-old girl's parents, who have shown up, while the babysitter waits outside next to Leah. Jackson tells Stephanie that they don't need to go to April's wedding, saying it's "simpler" if they don't go. She tells him about the patient, her husband and Stan, Donna's new lover. She tells him that's what it looks like when people are over each other. Jackson tells her he's simply not going because April is neurotic and he and Matthew are huggers. He assures her that he and April are over. Meredith confronts Cristina again about the printer and Cristina is apologetic but says they have to try one more time and it won't be available until 3 a.m. Meredith says that's not acceptable and Shane interject, telling Meredith that he had to force Cristina into trying the printer because Cristina was worried about Meredith. He tells Meredith that she is the one who made it personal, emotional and about their friendship. "If it was about the work, you would've gone to the chief of surgery, but you know what he would have said," he yells at her. "You'll get the printer tomorrow, Dr. Grey." He apologizes to Cristina in case it was out of line. She kisses him. Callie gives Arizona a hard time about Leah, but Arizona doesn't take it. She tells Callie she can't keep apologizing and that Callie can't keep being the victim. Ben and Bailey argue at home about whose fault it is that she's been taken off work. She throws down a chair, then comes back to pick it up. Jo tells Alex to go to Meredith's for Thanksgiving and she'll stay with the other interns to watch Webber. They decide to get take-out chicken. Meredith complains to Derek about Cristina being "mean" to her. Hunt comes over and tells Meredith she can invite Cristina to Thanksgiving if she wants to. Meredith doesn't seem interested. Cristina comes over and Hunt and Derek make quick exits. Meredith realizes she's alone with Cristina and walks away.
11Man on the Moon
05 Dec 2013Description ▼
Derek and Callie are ready to try their brain mapping project again while Meredith and Stephanie prepare to put a portal vein into a sheep. Cristina, meanwhile, has just finished having sex with Shane. She's impressed with his skills. Callie and Arizona are trying to be civil to each other, and Callie is trying to be civil to Leah, who is "dying" in their presence at the hospital. There's competition over which procedure is going to be more interesting to watch: Shane and Cristina's 3-D printed graft for their infant patient's heart or Meredith and Stephanie's portal vein in the sheep. The heart is winning. Hunt asks Meredith if she's going to watch Cristina's surgery, forgetting that she's putting her portal vein into a sheep. Webber gets a round of applause as he leaves the hospital to go home. He thanks Bailey on the way out for getting him better. Bailey seems to have a therapist following her around due to her apparent OCD. April's three sisters are in town and they're out having brunch when Jackson walks by. Matthew is annoyed when one of the sisters notes that he's "the Jackson," and the girls all get up to leave. Jackson and Matthew are left behind at the cafe. Alex's dad is back at the hospital, apparently struggling and Jo tells him he can't get clean at the hospital. He has some kind of seizure and falls unconscious. Jackson and Matthew walk out of the cafe and watch a hurried businessman-type jump into a cab that another, "hippie"-looking guy had flagged down. The hippie's tie is caught in the car door and the businessman tells the cabbie to drive away, dragging the hippie alongside the car. Jackson and Matthew tend to the hippie guy, who is not breathing, while a crowd gathers around them. The businessman comes back and says it was an accident. While Jackson turns to move the guy out of the way, Matthew takes a straw, cuts a hole in the unconscious guy's throat and uses the straw to make an airway. He's breathing again. The parents of the baby Cristina is going to operate on are getting cold feet about cameras that will be feeding a live stream of the surgery online. Cristina walks in and seems surprised to hear about the cameras but assures the parents that nothing is more important to her than their baby. Outside the room, Hunt tells Cristina that Shane suggested it. She reluctantly agrees. Derek and Callie's brain mapping subject is having trouble controlling the robotic fingers she's supposed to be controlling by concentrating. Alex's dad refuses methadone, saying he has to get totally clean. Hunt tells Jo to watch him, but she suggests sending him to a rehab facility. She tells Hunt that the man is Alex's dad, but Hunt doesn't budge. He tells Jo to watch him. Bailey comes over and asks Hunt to clear her for surgery, but the psychiatrist refuses to clear her. Bailey asks the psychiatrist what hoop she needs to jump through to be cleared. April brings her sisters to the hospital and she gets annoyed as one of her sisters makes a comment about Arizona's missing leg. Jackson and Matthew bring their accident victim into the ER and Jackson isn't pleased about Matthew's incision with his "Boy Scout knife," saying he's going to need to fix the horizontal incision. Matthew says he had to do it that way and Jackson will see why. April helps with the patient and asks Matthew to leave and take his sisters. Jo tells Alex that is dad is at the hospital going through withdrawal. Alex goes to kick Jimmy out of the hospital and freezes when Jimmy says, "Hey, son. How you doing?" Jimmy tells Alex that he's been trying to "get right" since Alex stood over him at the bar, just like he did when he was 15. Alex walks out. Derek and Callie wonder what they're doing wrong with their patient. The psychiatrist challenges Bailey to do five sutures without engaging in any OCD behavior. Bailey says, "Game on." The psychiatrist messes up all of Bailey's tools and this seems to bother Bailey, but she doesn't react right away. In surgery, Jackson calls April "Ducky," which is what her sisters call her. She doesn't like it. It's short for "ugly duckling" because she grew up with braces and such, and they still see her that way despite the fact that she's a trauma surgeon. Jackson admits to her that Matthew did the right thing with is incision. Meredith and Stephanie set up their own video camera in an O.R. by themselves as they put the portal vein into the sheep. Stephanie keeps saying Meredith is "changing the face of medicine." Meanwhile, Cristina has large crowd around her and a videographer shooting for the live stream as the online audience is growing. Mereidth's portal vein seems to be working while Cristina's 3D-printed conduit seems to be smaller than expected and not fitting quite right. Meredith talks into her camera explaining her experiment's success, while Stephanie celebrates in the background. Meredith doesn't know that in another O.R., Cristina's heart graft is failing and the baby's vitals are dropping. She asks for the cameras to be cut. Cristina has to answer to the baby's parents, who are frustrated with the process. The baby is on an oscillator and she says they have to wait. Alex doesn't seem too confident. Jimmy seems to be hallucinating a moment in which he got angry with Alex for breaking something as a child. Jo tries to talk him through his hallucination. She ups his meds to stop it. Meredith asks Shane how it's going while they're in the elevator together and he glumly tells her not to be smug, saying, "You won, we lost; I get it." Meredith tells him he can't talk to her that way, but he walks away. April's sisters show up with flowers and Arizona has to explain to them that April might be late because a trauma came in and April is busy saving someone's life. Bailey has two sutures done and three to go, but she can't get through them without crying a bit and getting shaky. The psychiatrist suggests to Bailey that she should take medication to keep the OCD under control, but Bailey doesn't go for it. The psychiatrist steps out to use the restroom, but takes a picture of the trays for reference. While she's gone, Webber seems to walk in, saying he was bored at home, and appears to rearrange Bailey's tools. Derek and Callie's brain mapping subject, Becca, still can't get the robotic hand to move. She yells at her husband John a lot. John leaves and Becca starts to cry, saying she snaps at him because he does everything for her and she agreed to the experiment because she wanted to be able to do one thing for him and she can't even do it. She asks for the sensors to be taken out of her head. Callie says they should schedule the surgery to take them out but Derek asks Callie to step outside to discuss. The sheep is flatlining when Stephanie walks in. Stephanie tries in vain to save it, but it's dead. Stephanie is crying over the sheep, but Meredith says they'll keep trying and failing "because that's what progress looks like." Derek and Callie argue about Becca and Callie says she's tired of fighting with Arizona, tired of fighting with Becca, and now she's fighting with Derek. Derek grabs a bottle of water, then says they need to talk to Becca. Arizona talks to one of April's sisters, who reveals that her husband had an affair but they're "getting through it" (which she pours herself a massive glass of wine) for the sake of their three children. Bailey again refuses to take the pills -- this time more angrily -- and Webber offers to take Bailey for a walk to get something to eat. She declines and says she needs to get back to surgery. Meredith finds Cristina at the 3D printer. They commiserate for a moment about their experiments, even though Cristina had thought Meredith's sheep thing had gone smoothly. Mereidth tells Cristina that Shane "seems different." Cristina says she hasn't noticed. Meredith says Shane is suddenly "aggressive and mean" and asks whether he's trying to be more like Cristina. They argue about whether Meredith is suggesting Cristina messed him up. Cristina says her job is to work on Shane's surgical skill, not his personality. Cristina leaves to see the baby, who is showing good signs and can come off the oscillator. The parent are relieved. Cristina and Shane leave, then, down the hall a ways, do a little celebratory dance. Jimmy has another hallucination and Jo comes in to help. In the midst of his hallucination, Jimmy slams Jo against a wall, hitting the back of her head on it. Alex storms in, pulls Jimmy off of her and tells her to leave. Alex puts his dad back in his bed and tells him to "sleep it off." Jo apologizes to Alex, but he tells her she shouldn't be sorry. He says his mother was crazy and his dad was a junkie and he "started running interference for them" when he was 6. "It's like riding a bike," he says. Derek asks Becca to try one last time and she reluctantly agrees. John goes to leave, but Callie says they need him to stay. Derek asks John to stand in front of Becca and asks Becca just to think about what she wants to say to her husband, without actually saying it. The robotic hand starts moving, and eventually reaches out to touch John's hand. He cries and says he never thought she's "touch" him again. April's bridal shower is happening and gets annoyed again with her sisters after they call her "Ducky" again. She declares that she's grown up now and is "a swan," and a "kick-ass surgeon," and admits that she's had sex before. She tells her sisters they're "fired" from being her bridesmaids and announces that "these" are her people now, referring to Arizona, Cristina and Meredith, saying they're going to be her bridesmaids. At the hospital, Jackson and Matthew have a brief macho showdown about who was right and wrong about the incision. Jackson says he told April that Matthew did the right, but the truth was it took him eight hours to fix the damage. Jackson then asks if Matthew is threatened by him. After a bit of silence, Matthew admits he has no problem with Jackson and Jackson says the same. They shake hands and Matthew tells Jackson it would mean a lot to April if he can make it to the wedding. Matthew says now that he and Jackson are "good," he'd like for Jackson to be there. Webber reminds Bailey, who is still struggling with her OCD, that she called him "a drunk" before his accident. She apologizes but he tells her she was right. He says he came back to the hospital because being home alone made him want to drink. He says he always wants to drink, "because I have a disease and it can't be cured, but it can be managed." He tells her to accept that she has a disease and accept the help being offered to her. She grabs the medication, pulls out a capsule and takes it. That night, Arizona and Callie are fighting at their apartment. Callie grabs Arizona and kisses her, having taken a lesson from Becca and John, and suggests that they might be talking too much. Perhaps they should be talking less. They kiss some more.
12Get Up, Stand Up
12 Dec 2013Description ▼
Cristina is uncomfortably giving a press conference about her risky procedure. She seems hesitant to be too celebratory, but Shane steps in and calls it a "home run," and they get cheers from the crowd while Meredith walks out. Later, Meredith and Stephanie bag another dead sheep and go back to the drawing board. Webber is getting back into the surgery game with a minor surgery. Bailey is also back and Webber tells her he's proud she's on her medication. Cristina isn't happy with Shane for speaking for her. She tells him he's "been going too fast lately" and she's worried he's going to burn himself out. He touches her arm and she says they're "not doing that anymore." He insists he's fine but she tells him to go home. Derek and Callie are working on their brain mapping experience, but Hunt brings up a presidential brain mapping project that Derek is being invited to join. Callie doesn't want him leaving. Leah tells Jo and Stephanie she doesn't want to go to April's wedding and see Arizona looking all gorgeous. She insists that she and Arizona "were something." A man brings his boy, Cody, to the ER after he'd fallen off a tractor and been run over. The father says his son was moving, but he brought him in himself instead of waiting for ambulance and Alex and Arizona seem worried. A press photographer comes in to take pictures of the 3D printer -- with Cristina instead of Meredith. Alex is worried Cody's father paralyzed his son by bringing him in alone. April shows up at the hospital with big rollers in her hair. She's looking for her bridesmaids. She runs into Jackson, who says he'll be at the wedding if she wants him there. Bailey and Leah are preparing for 20-year-old Elliott's 312th surgery to laser out some bronchial tumors, which he has to do every seven to 10 days. Bailey decides she's going to try to custom design a drug to stop the growth to avoid any surgeries again. Leah gets annoyed, saying she hasn't had enough surgeries because she's been waiting for Bailey to get back in the OR. Leah shouts at Bailey about how she deserves "better than this." Bailey doesn't really respond, but tells Leah they have to do the procedure once more to get a culture of Elliott's tumor, and Leah is going to do it, start to finish. Jackson and Stephanie work on a man with very bad breath. Jackson shows Dalton and his wife a blockage in the esophagus that is blocking some food from going all the way down his throat. Jackson says there are some risks, including potential damage to the vocal cords which would prevent Dalton from speaking again. April drags Cristina out of a photo shoot to get her headed toward the wedding. Hunt and Derek are getting briefed on the president's brain mapping project. Derek has the baby with him. He tells the men that his project is "all consuming" and he can't be pulled away. One of the men slides a check across the table, but Derek refuses to turn it over. He agrees to watch a video about their work. Alex drops into his father Jimmy's room. He asks his dad how he forgets his wife and three kids. Jimmy says he messed himself up so bad he forced himself to forget. They reminisce about going to the fair once. But the conversation turns to Alex's mom and Alex angrily tells Jimmy that he was the one who had to take care of her because he was gone. Alex shouts at him, "You were gone; you're worthless!" Jo steps in and urges Alex to walk away. Callie is giddily telling Arizona about her work, but Arizona doesn't seem amused. April grabs Meredith and drags her into a room to be fitted for her dress. Cristina is there, as well. Cristina admits to Meredith that she doesn't know how she fixed the 3D-printed conduit. Meredith tells Cristina she is "arrogant." Derek finishes watching the video but still insists he's overextended. They ask for just a bit of help. Derek tells them they're focus is too narrow on brain function. He says they need to stop looking at what the brain does and focus on why. "We're impulsive and compulsive," Derek says. The main guy seems to get it and begins to explain it to the others. Derek leaves. Dalton is headed into surgery and continuing to tell his wife things he's always wanted to say -- in case he loses his ability to speak. He tells her a purple dress she has actually does make her look fat and they laugh about it. She jokes to Jackson to just cut out Dalton's vocal cords, but her husband whispers something into her ear and makes her laugh, then heads into surgery. Leah apologizes to Bailey for talking to her inappropriately, but Bailey tells her she was right. Bailey tells her to never be afraid to stand up for herself. Leah seems inspired. Cristina and Meredith continue to argue. Meredith says Cristina has made it clear she thinks Meredith is a terrible doctor, but Cristina says Meredith has implied that Cristina is a terrible person. Shane comes in and tells Cristina she is being considered for the Harper Avery Award. Callie is still chatting to Arizona in surgery but Arizona still seems annoyed. They discuss whether to tell Cody's father that he likely paralyzed his son by bringing him to the hospital himself and Arizona insists they shouldn't because sometimes people try to help without knowing they're making something worse. Jackson and Stephanie wonder what Dalton told his wife. They settle on "I love you," and Jackson says Sloan once told him to tell someone you love them, "say it loud and go from there." Stephanie thinks it's sweet. April and Matthew run into each other at the hospital and immediately back away so they won't see each other. April thinks it's bad luck, but Matthew gives her a sweet speech about how it's all going to be fine. Alex tells Cody's father that his son is possibly paralyzed. The man cries and asks if it was his fault because he brought him to the hospital. Alex tells him he was trying to help, but the man sobs. Dalton brings to wake up but seems to have a seizure and Jackson tells Stephanie to page Derek right away. Meredith and Cristina are still arguing about each of their decisions -- Meredith's to have a family and Cristina's "shark"-like behavior in which Meredith says she's sabotaging her friends in order to win. Meredith then drops, "How long have you been sleeping with Shane?" She could tell because the normally shy guy didn't even bat an eye when he saw Cristina in her underwear. Cristina says it's none of Meredith's business, but Meredith says, "You don't have to justify it to me." Meredith tells Cristina that Shane is doing what Cristina did all through med school -- hooking up with the best teacher. She tells Cristina she's become the thing she worshiped. Cristina snaps back, "And you've become the thing we laughed at." Alex goes to his dad and tells him he did his best. Alex quickly tells him they're not family, but he, his mother and siblings are better off because he left. Alex wishes Jimmy luck fixing it with his other family in Florida. He reaches out to shake his dad's hand. They shake and Alex leaves. Derek tells Dalton's wife that her husband had a massive stroke and they're going to try everything to rehabilitate him but he admits they probably can't fix it. Derek leaves and Dalton's wife tries to talk to him, unsure if he can hear her. She sings, "It Had to Be You," which was their song. Stephanie and Jackson leave the room and Stephanie asks if it was something they did. Jackson says there's no way to know. Stephanie starts to say "I love you" but stops herself because Jackson looks distracted. Leah tells Jo she's going to the wedding and is going to stand up and tell everyone how she feels, but she stops because she realizes she sounds crazy. Leah decides not to go, but she's maxed on her hours in the fancy tablet system. Shane shows her how to manually lower them. She wonders when he sleeps. Hunt talks to Derek about the "call to serve" when the president asks, but Derek says this is just some guys trying to get some government money and "trying to stack the deck with my name." At April's wedding, Arizona is crying as they walk in, but Callie isn't totally sure why. Arizona says it's just because weddings make her cry. Jackson and Stephanie get there and see laid out. They're supposed to be opened when April and Matthew kiss, but Jackson doesn't realize it and opens a box. Out comes a butterfly. Stephanie jokes that he just ruined April's wedding. Ben tells Bailey he's worried she's quitting surgery because she handed one over to Leah and is "hiding back in the lab." She then asks him about why he quit surgery. He says they might not have gotten through her problem if he'd been back in L.A., but she says her symptoms got worse when he was around. Arizona cries when she sees April. She's having trouble not crying, then admits that Callie is driving her crazy with her effort to take care of her. Arizona says she cheated because someone was attracted to her and didn't know her before the amputation. Arizona says she's finally feeling good about herself now and she isn't sure Callie can make her feel the way she needs to feel about herself. Back at the hospital, Shane is insisting on doing Jimmy's surgery himself. Jimmy is unconscious. Cristina shows up at the wedding and she and Meredith settle things. Cristina says she's not the same person she was when they started working. She's different, even though everything looks the same. But, she adds, she's doing it alone even though she thought she'd always have Meredith. Meredith then admits she's jealous of Cristina because she was successful with the 3D printing without even knowing how she did it. She says Cristina has become everything they wanted to be. Cristina says Meredith has become something they didn't see coming. Meredith says she doesn't want to compete with Cristina, but she does because they're supposed to push each other. April finally cuts them both off and tells them they need to be focusing on her because it's her wedding day. Back at the hospital, Shane's surgery on Jimmy is not going well. Shane tries a risky fix that he says he's seen Cristina do, but that doesn't go well, either. Leah tells a nurse to call for help -- anyone. Leah tries to get Shane to step away from the patient, but he angrily refuses. She leaves. Hunt comes in and tells April that practically the entire hospital is there. Meredith sees Derek on her way in and thanks him for saying no to a lot of things so that she can focus on her research. Alex gets to the wedding and immediately kisses Jo and tells her they only need each other and if they have kids it will all be great. She agrees. Leah, at the hospital, finds Webber. The wedding starts, and at the hospital Webber comes in and Shane seems frozen. He's seeing flashes of Heather and when he sent her to find Webber in the basement. Webber tries to tell him he did good. Shane tells Webber, "It's my fault, I sent her to the basement." Webber tells him it's going to be fine. He tells Shane to go get some rest. As soon as Shane is gone, Webber quickly gets to work. Back at the wedding, Derek's phone rings. He steps out to take the call -- it's the president. We see each couple look at one another. Arizona cries when she looks at Callie, who is smiling. Bailey and Ben are angry sitting next to each other. Cristina glances at Hunt, who smiles at her while sitting next to his new girlfriend. Derek, sitting back in his seat and somewhat shaken, tries to give Meredith a reassuring smile. Webber continues working on Jimmy. At the wedding, the priests asks the friends and family if they will promise to support April and Matthew. April looks at Jackson, who is speechless and says nothing when the rest of crowd answers, "We will." Jackson anxiously turns to Stephanie and says, "I'm sorry." He stands up as if he's going to say something, and everyone stops for a moment. He sits back down. The priest laughs it off and continues. Moments later, though, Jackson stands up and declares, "I love you, April." He goes on to say he's loved everything about her since the day they met -- even the things he doesn't like. He says he wants her with him. "I love you, and I think that you love me, too," he says. "Do you?" April is stunned. Matthew looks at her for a response. April takes a quick breath. Cut to black.

Meredith feels betrayed when Derek goes back on a promise, Alex is furious after returning to the hospital and hearing the news about his father, and Arizona and Callie decide whether or not to move forward together. 14You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
06 Mar 2014Description ▼
Alex and Jo are making the most of their time in bed in the morning. Meanwhile, Hunt and Emma are doing the same while she talks about how he lives in a "tin can." He suggests they consider getting a bigger place together. Derek is getting ready for his meeting with the president. Meredith is being supportive of Derek getting the job, as a professional, but not so much as her husband. They haven't had sex in three weeks because he went back on his promise to let Meredith focus on her work. Callie forces Arizona to unpack a box in their new house -- there's a ring inside and she inscribed the band with the date they moved into the new house, commemorating their new start. Jackson and April are still trying to hide their marriage from everyone at the hospital and Hunt tells Derek he's considering moving out of the trailer. Cristina overhears this. Hunt announces the hospital's new "non-fraternization" policy and says all relationships with co-workers will be discouraged and all relationships between superiors and subordinates "is still prohibited." Jo and Shane don't look happy. Webber chastises Hunt for being "the panty police" now, but Hunt passes the job of discussing it further with the residents. Jo confronts Hunt with "questions" about the policy, and Hunt refers her to Webber. A teenage girl named Rory is having her toenails polished by her sister. Rory is in with cancer for a second time. They're going to biopsy a tumor, which Callie says is a totally separate one from the first. Alex notices some breathing issues and wants to do another test. He and Callie don't look happy. A 32-year-old woman named Lisa is brought in after being found injured in a trash chute. The woman insists she's not homeless and wasn't foraging for food. Her leg looks completely infected. She asks April to call her boyfriend, Ted, but to hang up if his wife answers. Jo complains to Webber about the policy, mentioning Meredith and Derek's meeting there. The other residents aren't backing her up. Webber tells Jo that "one of your own" lodged an anonymous complaint that prompted the new policy. Jo turns on Stephanie. Alex and Webber look at Rory's scan and realize it's a third cancer. The other residents are there. Webber tells them to come up with a plan while working as a team. They all scatter. Derek briefs Meredith on the status of their house before he heads off for another interview with the White House. Meredith invites Cristina over. Bailey gives Rory and her family cups to spit in. They want to test for anything genetic that might suggest why she keeps getting cancer. Rory's dad suggests it's on the mom's side, listing the many cancers her relatives have had and beat. Lisa explains to her friend, who's visiting the hospital, that she was at a party at Ted's house -- we learn Ted is the head of the sociology department. She was mortified after he ignored her all night, but as she left he asked her to take out the trash. She did, but her purse fell into the trash chute and she jumped in after it. Jackson and April continue picking pieces of garbage out of her infested leg. Arizona tries to tell Alex about her ring, but he's not interested. Jo comes and yells at Alex about ignoring her requests to talk, but he starts yelling back in front of everyone. He shouts that it's a stupid rule and she has a choice about whether to follow it, she shoots back that he has seniority so he doesn't have to worry about it. He yells at her that they're done, and she cries -- in front of everyone. Jo heads for the stairwell and her phone rings. It's Alex, asking, "How was that?" She says it was convincing and thanks him for doing it. They make plans to see each other that night. Alex smiles. Ben shares Chinese food with Bailey while trying to make a plan for Rory. He says the other residents are made at him because he gets to be happy with Bailey. They're about to get frisky, but Bailey notices a mutation in one of Rory's genes. Meredith and Cristina are having wine and Meredith admits she's enjoying torturing Derek. Cristina admits that her window with Hunt is closing. Derek shows up and says the interview was canceled. Cristina leaves. Derek heads for bed. Cristina shows up at Hunt's trailer and drunkenly congratulates him, bringing a bottle of wine. She tells him to enjoy it, "the both of you," and he says Emma's not there. Jo and Alex are discussing their plans for how to keep their relationship secret. They start making out on the couch. At their place, Arizona and Callie kiss and giddily make out even as they say they feel bad for Jo in light of her fight with Alex. Cristina and Hunt are drinking the wine together in the trailer. Cristina randomly starts asking Hunt about his feelings on interior design, and whether he was sad that they never had valances on their drapes in the firehouse -- calling her mom for a reminder on what they're called. He says he's not sad about that. They kiss. Emma drops by the hospital to talk to Hunt. She starts talking about looking at houses, and the conversation they haven't had about kids. She starts having the kids conversation and Hunt is silent. He reassures her and says it's reasonable and they should be talking about these things. Bailey comes in and tells Alex, Webber and Callie about Rory's extremely rare genetic condition, which makes her unable to fight off tumors. They start comparing notes on how to treat her. Webber decides to get the residents on it. He goes and tells them about Rory's condition and asks them to look up every case -- there are only a couple hundred -- and figure out what worked and what didn't. Jo volunteers to work with Alex, saying she has to face him sometime. Stephanie and Leah share a glance. Webber gives Shane a little pep talk, telling him he wants to hear him speak up more. Derek tells Hunt to put him back in the surgery rotation, but Derek admits that the project was exciting -- asking all the questions he's been asking his entire career. He wonders how he can go back to neurosurgery after that. Hunt says he understands, looking over at Cristina, and says, "your standards have changed." Derek agrees. April tells Lisa her leg is mostly cleaned up and they're going to let it heal. Lisa's friend brings flowers into the room and Lisa cries when she realizes they're not from Ted but from her mom. Jackson and April talk about their secret marriage and, while April says she likes the secret, they figure they should start telling people. Rory and her sister talk about her condition, and the sister is worried she'll also get cancer. Her parents are forcing her to get her genes tested, but her sister doesn't want to take it. Alex tells her she doesn't have to take the test if she doesn't want to. Alex and Jo chat in the hallway and he puts his hand on her shoulder. They step into a supply closet and Alex says he doesn't want to hide their relationship anymore. They hear a noise and Jackson, shirtless, steps out and asks if one of them can hand him his shirt. April steps out, as well, and asks the same. Suddenly, Webber opens the door and finds Jackson and April half-dressed, and Alex and Jo in close proximity. Saying nothing, he shakes his head and closes the door. Alex assures Jo that the board doesn't really care about the policy, but Jackson, as a board member, says the board cares. Meredith tells Cristina that her project is at a standstill unless she hands it over to a bioengineer. She doesn't want to let Derek off the hook by lowering her workload. Cristina gets philosophical, telling Meredith that she has to think of it as "letting someone else take your project out for a spin," seeing what else is out there before letting it come back with fresh eyes. Meredith figures out that Cristina slept with Hunt. Cristina admits it's true. Alex and Webber respond to an emergency with Rory. Her sister sees it all and is scared. Jo confronts Stephanie about her complaint, saying that she should have just dealt with her "little heart" being broken. Stephanie repeats that it was an anonymous complaint, and Leah jumps in to admit that she filed it because she felt like her education was being compromised. Shane stands up and says they're squandering the opportunity they have. He admits he almost blew it all because he got distracted by Cristina and they're all getting distracted, too. He says he has an idea, and hands Ben a paper. They finally start working together, but Webber and Alex are simply trying to keep Rory's heart beating. The residents are getting excited about their plan and they go to tell Webber. They run down the hall and catch Webber and Alex coming out of surgery. Webber says their idea might have worked, but Rory bled out in surgery. She died. They're stunned. Alex and Webber tell Rory's parents and sister. Her parents cry and her sister asks if she has the same syndrome. Alex says yes. Alex is summoned to the boardroom. Jo is already in there. Alex is angry that he's even there. Callie says they just want him to keep his relationship professional at work, but he calls that "crap," chastising them for flaunting their relationships and rings and "happy little lives" because they're married. "I'm not going to let a bunch of hypocrites tell me to keep my pants on at work when this place was built on all of you feeling each other up in our on-call room," he shouts. Jo is still in the room after Alex leaves. Jackson then hastily announces that he and April are married. They get congratulations and Jo is annoyed. April leaves and wishes Jo luck. Stephanie tells Leah that filing the complaint took a lot of balls. Leah knows Jo is going to mad at her, and Stephanie suggests they go hide at the bar. She forces Shane to come with them. Lisa's friend calls Ted and tells him to send Lisa flowers, apologize and never see her again. Jackson and April come in and Lisa says she's going to make better decisions and not date married men any longer. Lisa asks Jackson what he's doing that weekend. He says he already has plans with her wife. Lisa tells April that Jackson should really wear a ring, adding, "it's not fair going around looking like that without one." Ben and Bailey are leaving and the other residents ask if Ben can come with them to the bar. Bailey tells him to go play with his friends, but not to stay out too late. At the bar, Hunt is breaking up with Emma. She wants an explanation, because that morning they were on the same page. He says he wants to come home to someone at night who is equally passionate about their work, but when she said she'd give up her work for a family, which is fine for her but they want different things. She leaves. At home, Derek tells Meredith the White House doesn't want him on the advisory board, they want him to run the project. She says she's happy for him, but says there's no room for her to take her career to the next level and for him to "run the thing." But she smiles and says she's going to have sex with him, because she finds presidential appointments very sexy, and they can fight more later.
